Maybe you’re right Rich, but I still didn’t enjoy the racing, Isty ofcourse owed us nothing but I’d rather he finished the race. Barton on the other hand didn’t run his race and was beaten at the top of the hill and wouldn’t have won any race on this showing!
March 12, 2002 at 19:29 #98354No, Barton wasn’t with it at all. But we all have bad days and I’m looking forward to seeing him improve next year.
Tomorrow will be better, I promise! Edredon, Flagship and Tiutchev will jump the last together and flash past the post in a record breaking three-way dead heat. I promise.
March 12, 2002 at 19:35 #98355Have my own opinion on the race but now aint the time(I’ll get back to you Escorial) but how gut wrenching for the Pipe team.I am by no means Pipe’s biggest fan but this after Gloria Victus…….thats tough.
March 12, 2002 at 20:01 #98356Totally agree Aidan, I remember Gloria Victis as if it were yesterday.
What a dreadful incident to watch today.
Comiserations to all connections of Valiramix.
March 12, 2002 at 20:04 #98357Part 37 in my never ending quest to upset as many people as possible.
Question. How does someone prove what a caring sensitive soul they are. Simple, within minutes of a horse being injured let everyone know just how deeply it has affected you…….and then quickly move on to the next race at Sedgefield. What a load of self indugent, sentimental tripe. Pass the sick bucket. If someone was really concerned about the welfare of horses they wouldn’t support national Hunt racing.
Live on Channel 4 see the top jockey as he sheds a tear. See his pain, so you weep too. After all if it’s good enough for A.P…… Makes a great shot for Channel 4. Even better than Kilroy hugging a terminally ill child.
Question, would the same people be posting if Chimes At Midnight had been fatally injured out of camera shot. No because it would have only been a footnote at the end of the race. Why ? Because it was a 200/1 no hoper and therefore there are no brownie points to be gained for showing how much you care. Besides, you only got so much compassion and that’s saved for the front three in the market.
For the record I was unaffected by the death of Valiramax because (A) I didn’t bet in the race (B) Because I am obviously immune to the higher level of feelings exhibited by some here. (C) I am not a hypocrite.
March 12, 2002 at 20:21 #98358Keith, I hope you don’t mind me saying your very sad too! you assume too much, I care no matter what horse gets killed or injured wether it be 1/2f or 250/1.
ps. I did bet in the race, I bet Marble Arch e/w (ante-post) but it would’ve been so much better had Isty won and Valiramix to live to fight another day, some of us do care you know!
Before a race goes off, the first thing I say to my mates in my local is "I hope nothing falls"!

Whereas an uncaring git like me says "I hope I win".
Must remember to buy a bigger sick bucket.
March 12, 2002 at 20:30 #98360Keith, I would call you sad but then again betting shops are filled with people like you…. depressing people.
Most people here care about the horses if not all, take your point about Chimes At Midnight for example but I think most of us here would care, I know I would anyway …call me sad but I remember names of horses that have died at little tracks over the years …like the three horses killed in that incident at Sedgefield for example, don’t brand us all…
As for Jim’s comments and others.
First off, we wouldn’t know these horses were it not for racing, be it National Hunt or Flat
Most of these horses would not even be alive in the first race, be it National Hunt or Flat
You want Friday to come because you want no more horses you know to die ..but the fact is, were it not for the excitement and build up to these three days you would know little of these,
Is the Flat really safer ? Well, what happens to many of the 2 year olds that are knackered out by the end of their season,
Just because we don’t have to watch what happens them before our own eyes doesn’t make it better ..
As for Barton …he could race Moscow Flyer ten more times and he wouldn’t beat him
March 12, 2002 at 20:36 #98361Firstly, Keith, people that hope to win never win!!! ;)
Secondly, Daniel, Moscow Flyer wouldn’t be certain to stay on his feet in his next ten races so that theory does out the window! ;)
March 12, 2002 at 21:06 #98362Keith,
Don’t criticize what, obviously, you can’t understand.

But not enough to give up risking the lives of these animals for their entertainment ?
March 12, 2002 at 22:03 #98364Actually, this is one hell of a difficult question.
On the one hand, I feel nothing but hate, digust and venom towards the people, who, for example, cheered when See More Business fell heavily at Chepstow in the Rehearsal Chase (that’s what happened as I watched the race on TV at Sandown on Tingle Creek day).
And yet, here I am, supporting National Hunt racing, and continuing to support it despite the death of many of my favourite horses down the years.
It’s a bizarre dilemma.
Keith might have the tact of a sledgehammer but…
I’m sorry, I am going to love tomorrow and Thursday, and I’ll do the same at Aintree. And I love horses at the same time. Life isn’t black and white.
March 12, 2002 at 22:14 #98365keith makes a valid point.
all this talk on here and one or two other threads about people laying istabraq but crying tears of joy if he wins !
gambling and sentiment dont go together!
i didnt have a bet in the CH and did want Isty to win but if i had serious money on another horse then my concern would be for that horse and not Isty !
anyone putting money on horses and wanting to win long term cant let emotions get in the way !
March 12, 2002 at 22:20 #98366DJ, you may be right. Gambling and Sport don’t go together.
Although I had a financial interest in all the races today, really, I couldn’t give a damn about the results as long as I enjoyed them. Which is why, although I backed Landing Light, I would have still cheered Istabraq all the way home. Becuase I don’t really care about losing my few quid for the sake of the thrill of seeing a great winner.
But I’m not a gambler. I wasn’t risking anything. Your mileage obviously varies.
March 12, 2002 at 22:22 #98367…erm sorry to ramble. I forgot my main point.
… whether I’ve had a bet or not, I don’t like seeing dead horses, even if they would have beat the horse I’d backed.
March 12, 2002 at 22:24 #98368Agreed Rich. DJ, I think for serious gamblers, the emotional bit should be left at the door when you are making your selections – but that doesn’t mean you then can’t appreciate history being made, or a fantastic sporting achievement. A person may be a gambler, but they should always remain human!
I cried for Isty and Valiramix, and cheered HLL home. Most people can experience two emotions at once – it doesn’t make anybody a hypocrite.
March 12, 2002 at 22:29 #98369ktt, of course we care about the best horses more..why shouldnt we? we have much more emotional attachment in the better horses as they give us more pleasure and therefore on a purely physiological level we will grieve more..its exactly the same when someone famous dies..its on the news and everyone feels sad..just take dianas case…when someone slightly famous dies..sure its a blow but noone really cares long term unless you were close to them and its the same for horses
