No entries for the next week it would seem … you can use the "Search" facility on the SportingLife.com website to track future entries

Moehat, certainly agree that this was not a case of Gazza pursuing self interest and hope I didn’t infer that in my original post.

I too am a regular visitor to the area and usually base myself in nearby Swarland with Rothbury being a favourite place for both walking and cycling trails. I never cease to be amazed by how few people there are in the region even in the height of summer in an area that boasts possibly some of the best beaches in the country.

Here’s hoping that all those that have been affected by this incident, and lived to tell the tale, recover fully in time and rebuild their lives as best they can.

Hes probably decided riding Mrs Quinn is better than some of the nags he last rode

As far as I’m aware, Alex and Richard separated over a year ago … saw her at Towcester a few months ago while on ATR duty and she is certainly a good looking girl … knows her horses too …

Given the po-faced reaction on recent threads regarding the attractiveness ( or otherwise ) of certain other prominent female presenters I will refrain from saying anything too chauvinistic.

Now you’re talking … this guy is my kind of tipster and I find he reads races very similarly to myself in looking for the not so obvious and the horses that have often shown promise without finishing in the frame … strike rate not necessarily the best but invariably excellent value when they do win.

Downside is that bookies are very aware what this guy is tipping on any given day and once the tips are online on ATR website they can contract very quickly … so, in answer to the question, I would have to say it’s very rare to get the prices quoted by Hugh unless you’re very quick.

Of course, Tom Segal (Pricewise) continues to give excellent advice as well and I find it irritating and comforting in equal amounts when he occasionally comes to the same conclusion as me when searching for the value in a race … I often open Saturday’s RP in trepidation to find my extensively researched "value" bet headlining his column … grrrrrr … and you can guarantee that by the time I get down to the bookies the price will have contracted considerably.

Stood watching her on Racing UK duty at Nottingham some time ago and, whilst not exactly my cup of tea, I was struck by the fact that she’s actually a lot more attractive in the flesh than she appears to be on the small screen … bit of a back-handed compliment, I know … but nevertheless ……….

… and no, I hadn’t been drinking before anyone questions whether the beer goggles were on :)

Fearing for my 20/1 voucher on Higuain now … can’t see him getting too many chances against the Germans … in comparison Villa could get a hatful against Paraguay judging by what I saw this afternoon.

Remember his horses well … Gaye Brief, Fifty Dollars More, Half Free … leading jumps owner four times in the 80’s before seemingly retiring from the sport.

"The first big-spending jumps owner of modern times was Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin, whose 30-strong string seemed formidable in the 1980s. John Francome will never forget the potentate who took exception to his riding, instead employing Richard Linley as his jockey.
Most of the sheikh’s horses were trained by Francome’s employer, Fred Winter, who’d never previously yielded to any owner. That alone illustrated the sheikh’s clout, yet his string would cut little ice today."

… and found this quote from Charlie Brooks talking about his first meeting with Mercy Rimell …

"The first time I met Mercy face-to-face was at a lunch in Somerset given by Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin, who later that day asked me if I would run hotels in Morocco for him. Anyway, that’s another story.
Mercy had trained the Champion Hurdler, Gaye Brief, for him, and my guv’nor, Fred Winter, had a stack of good horses such as Fifty Dollars More and Half Free owned by the Sheikh. Trainers are not totally immune to ‘equine shoplifting’, i.e. they have been known to say, "Gosh, wouldn’t that horse benefit from a change of scenery". Now I’m not suggesting for one moment that Fred thought that Mercy would ever do such a thing, but he couldn’t be at the lunch and he didn’t really want his position as the Sheikh’s No.1 trainer undermined, so he sent me in to be ‘nightwatchman’.
She ate me for breakfast, or should I say lunch? I fluffed my lines every which way. It must have been like watching Margaret Thatcher in a bate, sorting out the cheese-eating surrender monkeys across the Channel. Which was probably why the Sheikh asked me to run hotels for him. He clearly didn’t think I knew much about horses."

I agree it’s very difficult to make a case for calling any of our players "world class" on the evidence we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks.

I have a theory that we only see the best of these players when they’re surrounded by the superior technical skills of the foreign players within their own club sides and, unfortunately, when they all then get together and pull on an England shirt, those technical deficiences are cruelly exposed.

Cannot believe how naive we were today … summed up for me in Germany’s third goal … everyone in the ground knows that Lampard is going to blast the free kick … so why have 9 players in and around the box ? … tactical madness … why were the coaches not screaming at Upson or Terry to stay back and defend ? … unless the players themselves weren’t sure whether Lampard was crossing or shooting … quite bizarre for a team playing at that level and, for me, suggests something within the camp was very, very wrong.

Not a race for significant investment but should be a cracker … can’t have 4/1 the favourite in a race this competitive.

The stand out for me is Alan Swinbank’s Stanstill … I liked the way he stuck to his task on his first try at 2m last time at Haydock … especially as it was on ground he wouldn’t particularly have appreciated … drawn well in 7 (although still unconvinced that a draw matters over 2m ?) … stable in good form 4/13 … and underrated jockey also in form 3/7.

Expect him to try and make all and repel all challengers in the final furlong.

    Off to Coral’s for a bit of 16’s :)

Dangers ? … think Chiberta King could improve again for the step up to 2m.

Sympathies lie with Conundrum on this one (the love-in continues apace) … for all his talents I can never, ever get on this guy … guarantee if I back him he’ll be the one under pressure four out and just go backwards … never any do or die heroics to get up on the line when he’s carrying the crippling weight of my money.

… and yes, it’s personal  … ever since he cost me over £3k at the Festival with his ridiculous last gasp win on Wichita Lineman when I had Maljimar with Forpadydeplasterer & Punjabi … like many a "wronged" punter, subsequently I find I feel admiration and loathing in equally irrational amounts.

Bottom line is, for all punters, he’s still the one jockey you don’t want your selection to be up against in a driving finish … you know you’ll lose more than you win. Incredible and unmatched will to win … and sometimes feel he has almost too much courage for both his and his mounts own good when driving tired horses into the last couple of fences. Totally fearless.

Probably neither – aren’t soaps recorded about three months in advance?

Excellent point and never entered my head … ( someone needs to invent a Homer Simpson "Doh" smiley ) … note to self … must stop late night posting when brain is shutting down.

Just one of life’s odd coincidences then I guess.

I hope that we can call an end to hostilities and put aside our preconceived ideas about who we both are as human beings. I bear you no ill-will and I hope you will reciprocate in kind.

Likewise, Ken … we draw a line under it and move on … wishing you a good week

I’m sure I once read somewhere that Weatherby’s had a policy of discouraging owners from registering names of once famous racehorses from history … not sure what their criteria for "famous" was though !!

I often spot familiar names of horses from when I was growing up and getting interested in racing some forty odd years ago … the most recent one being Osbaldeston, a 7 year old gelding with Ruth Dobbin … also a grand old chaser and 22 times winner for Fred Winter in the 1970’s and once named by John Francome as the most spectacular jumper of fences that he’d ever sat on.

I appreciate that it might be difficult for you to regain any credibility on this forum now that other members will be unable to differentiate between the truth of your words and those that you steal from others but you have only yourself to blame

Touche, Ken :) … I never realised my posts were so memorable … clearly you have far too much time on your hands in your perverse crusade to rid the forum of every poster save yourself … just imagine when you’re the only one left, you can agree and disagree with yourself according to your moods.

I refer to my original thread response :)

… and btw, for future reference, it was my own "petard" that you perceive I was hoisted on, not "pitard"

Personally,I will take a Melton Mowbray pie in the face anytime, for a worthy cause.

p.s. BHL, there I was thinking your posts were original and now you openly admit to plagiarism. Deplorable, yet I daresay understandable in your case.

Given the hardness of the crust of a genuine Melton Mowbray pork pie, I would take a cream pie in preference every time, Conundrum … I’m assuming of course that you weren’t making a pornographic reference

As for your second point, clearly if you were a true scholar you would appreciate the difference between flagrant plagiarism and using a quoted source :D

there is sometimes a fine line between that self confidence and arrogance’

A quotation generally attributed in modern times to renowned industrialist, Jack Welch, CEO of General Electric, the company I was employed by for over 30 years. (Straight from the Gut. 2001) … Also known within the business community as "Neutron Jack" for his ability to eliminate employees whilst leaving buildings intact.

I once had someone work for me who fell into this category and I often reminded him of this quotation. I had a devil of a job to convince the other managers in the Plant that his arrogance was borne of self confidence in his own ability. It’s a difficult trick to pull off convincingly and remain likeable … some can, some can’t

Unfortunately, your response fell into neither category and was more akin to Oscar Wilde’s celebrated quote concerning "sarcasm being the lowest form of wit"
