Today isn’t a day to savour, BHL.
Explain please, AJ … I understand what you’re getting at but not sure you’ll have too many on here offering to let the bookies have a good blub on their shoulder.
Given how the bookies want every aspect of punting weighted in their favour, I have little sympathy for them when a well executed plan is achieved.
I trialled a plan I had on football trebles which I felt I could make money at, opened an account with one of the big four and was doing very nicely thank you only to start getting restrictions placed on my stakes as soon as I started showing a profit (and it was by no means huge) … needless to say I closed my account and won’t be bothering again … I now switch between the three bookmakers in my town and manage to keep in front on my football betting without creating unwanted attention … which is ridiculous given my relatively small stakes.
Glenn, betting in the last two races at Wolverhampton totally skewed by the morning coup on the Barney Curley horses with both favs part of the four horse coup … with the first one going in at Brighton and three of the four eventually winning by the end of the evening it was no wonder the bookies were wetting themselves already by the 5.00 at Wolv
Yep, apologies Kopwas … wasn’t trying to steal your thunder

Ah, OK, I get it now … so they had three very well backed horses spread around the country this afternoon … with Agapanthus 2/1 winning at Brighton … Savaronola 11/10 winning at Wolverhampton … Sommersturm 1/3 beaten in the last at Wolverhampton.
Presumably sheer weight of money riding on the last named forced him to long odds on ?
Can only assume they also had tonight’s winner in doubles and trebles with the other three … tonight’s winner being formerly trained by Andrew Stringer, Barney Curley’s assistant … heaven help the bookies had the 1/3 shot won !!!
Have to hand it to them … it’s the stuff of legends and will no doubt be recalled in many a pub as one of the great gambling stories for many years to come.
No doubt more details will follow.
Small fry on this occasion BHL, only £2 at 1000 on Sunbow and £5000 at 1.01 on the eventual "winner".
Thanks Eddie … quite surprising really … although the 8.05 at Thirsk on a Saturday night is not exactly "prime time" audience I guess.
Always remember Francome telling stories about changing his boots between the weighing room and the parade ring … here’s a nice little article I found which doesn’t add much to the argument here but is amusing nevertheless ….
By the way, would love to know what he traded at in running …… as Peter Naughton said just after he’d crossed the line … "someone’s just lost their house on that one" … don’t know much about "in running" but am I right in thinking there’s a 999/1 limit on the odds ??? … of course, beyond that, what people are willing to stake or lay against those odds is up to them presumably ???
Just to clear up any misconception … the comment by the Racing UK commentary team about the weight cloth falling off during the race was a light hearted throw away line by, I think, Peter Naughton to try and explain how the horse had managed to finish so fast
… they had no visual evidence at the time that this was the caseI wondered why the men are being nice to her, and there it is, she’s a model!
28 days is the rule, she knew that before she got on the horse. That should be the ban. Simples!
gosh, never realised I was so shallow … obviously my sarcasm was not barbed enough for your taste, Phil !!Big Noise for me … on my list since last backend … lightly raced, no ground preference and goes well fresh … currently 25/1 with Ladbrokes and Stan James
Staying on fifth beaten less than 3 lengths and gone into a lot of notebooks I would imagine … just missed out on ew double with Eradicate (took 25’s) in the Swinton.
Personally I prefer the big field handicaps as they offer more each way opportunity for the small time punter … with any punting, as my Dad used to tell me, know your limits and don’t bet what you can’t afford to lose.
Had two small win bets and an ew double today on the two big handicaps … Big Noise in the Victoria who finished 5th (of course) and Eradicate in the Swinton (took 25’s) … sorry for the after time, guys … only spotted this morning he was 18lbs better off with Overturn (incl David Bass’ 7lb allowance) and thought today’s conditions were perfect for him.
Nice return on the day

Big Noise for me … on my list since last backend … lightly raced, no ground preference and goes well fresh … currently 25/1 with Ladbrokes and Stan James
Have to say in Chester’s defence that it is a truly amazing spectacle to watch the horses flying around that final bend and straightening up for the finish … but as a betting proposition ? … no thanks !!
What a truly amazing stat for the sprint handicap on the first day … if I heard correctly, there had been no horse in the first 3 for the last nine years drawn higher than 7 … and this year ? … 3, 7 & 5 made it ten years on the trot … no surprise there then !!!
Stupid question but I assume you’ve registered ???
Can’t argue with that reasoning, Sean … having seen the footage several times I’m convinced she thought she had enough momentum to just stay a fraction in front of the hard ridden runner up … something which far more proficient and experienced jockeys than Laura have got wrong before now.
Rules are rules and I’m sure she accepts that … just unfortunate that the length of ban means she has to wait for some considerable time before exorcising this nightmare start to her riding career … if she ever bothers again at all !!
http://www.prometheusradio.com/lauraprobert/about.html
For those wanting pictures a quick google of Laura discovered this slightly bizarre and sycophantic (bordering on stalker territory) website by her (apparently) now ex-boyfriend … !!!
She is without doubt a good looking girl but simply finding the site and posting it makes me feel slightly voyeuristic
C’est la vie !!I fear we’ve gone off topic !!
Whatever the issues here I’m sure Laura herself must be feeling pretty mortified this evening … personally, never having ridden anything more than a seaside donkey on Skegness beach I can’t comment on how "exhausted" she felt after an extended six furlongs … looking at the replay again it’s almost as if she "froze" when confronted with the prospect of winning the race on her first ride and just didn’t know how to react … or maybe I’m just being kind !
Nope, sorry, just watched it yet again and she was definitely trying to win cheekily … spot the crafty glance across to the eventual winner about 50 yards from the line … the reaction of the Racing UK presenters immediately after the race said it all …
