Dettori and especially Macevoy’s were clearly the best and went unrewarded.Ryan Moore’s ride would win 7/10 and Manning delivers the type of lost in traffic fare whuch he gets caned for and emerges triumphant.Do you think he’ll have that luxury in a tactical affair against older more seasoned horses?
I’ve seen an alternative which works well and abandons the idea of arbitrary handicapping ratings.
The minimum standard is met by reqiuring all horses to win a qualifying trial as a means of gaining a run in a maiden which is run at set weights.From there you progres to class4 where you may win twice before moving on to class 3 and so on up to class1 which equates with an open handicap that can be discretionally wieghted by the handicapper
.In each of the class division there is a 2kg differential between previous winners in that particular class and non winners in the said class.
Open class horses that are difficult to place gravitate toward races which are less well endowed.
My own embellishment would be to suggest not to many races are programmed too far in advance and like an american secretary write races for the available horse population(I can expound if required)
Clubs would jointly be required to provide an opportunity of 1 run a month for every qualified horse at pain of financial compensation to those owners who are not catered for.
Some imaginative programming perhaps may see two classes melded together and may require connections to nominate a distance range at the start of every month.
Some tracks would disappear and it may give rise to super centres which cater for racing training and qualifying at the one facility.Some tracks would lose their raceday utility and become trial tracks only.If by world class it means that he’s adaptable enough to succeed in any racing jurisdiction.this claim does not bear scrutiny.Witness his abject failure during his aborted Gulfstrem sojourn,the riding of his maiden winner in Australia resulted in a lengthy suspension,the lack of a profile in Japan where Peslier, Lemaire and Oliver are all widely respected and patronised,and the fact that he’s not welcome in Hong Kong due to character issues.
To digress briefly,the most damming thing about the Ballinger Ridge ride was how contra-style it was.When has Fallon been know to seize the initiative at the front end and subsequntly hare off like that?I don’t expect to persuade the acolytes but be polite enough to ask me to bend over first.Cheer up Bear.
Gosden has three outstanding prospects in Lucarno,Ridge Dance and Sense of Joy and whole winter/spring to plan,progress and protect their reputations.
Laying in wait.This has to be a JRA pulicity beat up.If not,I agree it’s fantastic.Place lay.
What for me was interesting was the soliitor’s statement,"…There was never any allegation of failing to ride on the merits. "(re Culhane)Why deny an allagation that was never made?
To answer the question ,its a trip away from home,stalls practice in a raceday environment,and a gallop without any pressure thus enhancing the possabilities of a young horse relaxing in running.The inability to learn from other countries and provide a systematic means of publicly trialling leaves one with no other option.Far from comdemnation his practices should met with applause for their thoroughness
By contrast David Elsworth convinces his owners to part with 45k for King Joshua at the 06 HIT sale and then proceeds to run him at Leicester and Epsom,two tracks that have notable inclines.The horse takes a good grip and racing at these venues hardly suit to enable the horse to learn to settle.Inexplicably he then steps him up further in trip only to watch the horse waste energy pulling yet still running well.A stopgap measure is to then dial him back to 10f and he again runs creditably finishing a solid 3rd to Jalil at Ripon.I don’t know the ins and outs of the programming schedule,not having access to a calender nor do I claim familiarity with the horses daily wellbeing but superficially he appears to have been handled all wrong.What I can do is suggest a remedy taking a leaf out of Sir Mark’s "training for dummies".
Drop the horse back to 6f on the a.w. ride him cold,let him get run off his feet and pass only the stragglers.Rrun up as many blind alleys as possible thus negating the need to use the whip.When he’s done that 2 or 3 times step him up to that lowly mile maiden that he’ll still be elidgible for and then proceed after winning to run him at his logical trip 10-12f as horse who relaxes and tries his best.
King Joshua’s current abscence from the radar indicates gelding,but when he returns and wins a big handicap next year and Elsworth explains that the operation was the making of the horse,that may be only half the story.
Boscobels Ascot victory was widely lauded.The denial of the chance to do the same at the Curragh goes unmentioned.More Wells suffering form spoiler tactics at Leopardstown barely raises a ripple.A four horse race at Goodwood8won byOgee) provides a fascinating tactical battle and a tight finish.
If you’ve got enough money to despoil any chance that a front runner has,the shape of the race is in your hands.Pacemakers are by definition not running to achieve the best possible finishing position.
This kind of idiocy rains in the men’s 1500m at the Olympics.Previously there was a qualifying heat,two semi finals and a final containing particpants there on merit.Nowadays the qualifying standard is so high,and attained in lead up races that are inevitably a world record attempt for the current no. 1.These race are never about tactical and finishing speed as they once were..Add to that the fact that there are only two semi’s and a final and you get a coronation for the gullible televisual audience.Can you see the parallel with ignorant money in racing?
So then you come to the Breeder’s Cup for example which is a meritocracy if nothing else,nobody prepared to overplay their hand,and european form doesn’t work out,(even when they win)Down among the real racing community OR70-110 the notion of a pacemaker is laughable and results are a testament to horses various attributes(gate speed, the ability to relax in running,determination in a finish,durabilty etc).
The difficulty placing a horse like Salute highlights the contempt with which the above mentioned qualities are overlooked in favour of this group racing nonsense.The idea of group classifiacation is nothing more than a means of numerifying races for the illiterate, in terms of an individual race’s worthyness.I was 10 years old when I could tell you that the Sheepsheadbay h’cap was a top race for fillies and mares and I lived half a world away without internet or any media other than the occasional Bloodhorse.Withdraw funding for all group racing and let them self finance,and use the savings to finance handicappers to race in a series qualify dependent finals that can be run at both level weights and within a narrow weight band, as the americans do.
More notes on the revolution are available upon request..
It’s impossible to assess APO’s ability,given that he has the option of rejecting at least as many top end yearlings as he ends up taking into training.Being a member of that exclusive club which can afford to stake,maintain and travel any horse adds to the lopsidedness of the equation.He has to be held to a higher standard.The best horse he has trained in terms of coming up at the highest level three seasons in a row is High Chapparal.He came across as a temprementally cold,gelding like performer whose chances of succeeding at stud rest solely with the number of mares covered.In contrast Hawk Wing is probably the horse he himself might nominate as the greatest natural talent and he got the better of him.Ace another with precocity tailed off toward the end also.These are examples that come readily to mind and not selected choices that support my supposition.Another would be George Washington with whom he is currently wrestling.
If you’re remit is to produce colts and you’re adequately provisioned to do it, then that is the standard to which you should be held.It’s not as if there is anybody else knocking out good resilient colts monotnously,but when all the tinpot age restricted,group racing is subtracted from the total,Ballydoyle’s results are mixed.Competitve races that require form and not money to get a start are the yardstick,so its the Arc,Breeder’s Cup,Prix de L’Opera,Kentucky Derby,Dubai World Cup,Sheema Classic,KIng George,Jacques le Marois,Japan and Melbourne Cup etc.
He is clearly a sound reader of a horse,in the respect that Gosden works with a white cane,labrador and night vsion goggles,and he puts the pedal to the floor when he thinks the time has come.His much reputed fastidiosness smacks a little Kim il Jong and must grate on the staff and leads you to the ultimate question about APO,why do it?If he hasn’t got enough money and personal assets by now why in god’s name be somebody else’s man unless you doubt your ability?
this also has been "tubed";
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZA-A230bEs
The full Sunday Times quote would in fact be;
“I watched the Derby all right, but I tried not to watch too many races,â€ÂÂ
Decision making;Fallon,as with Shoemaker lags well behind Dettori in terms of technique.Incidentally his ride on Horatio Nelson at Epsom was as good as I’ve seen from him on that basis, and he’s unlucky not to count that as a win.
andyod, I’m in agreement with what you say.
sir harry,RP 5 year stats say that Dettori is 19% from 84 and Fallon is 23% from 73.Given Godolphins helplessness with young horses,at a guess they have put at least 11 horses under him on Derby day that could not win.I appreciate that statistics hide a great many crimes but superficially here they support a case for saying that the difference is neglible.
naps is probably correct in this context as both practices share the same name.
Inserting a rubber tube with a rounded end and an opening adjacent to it,into the nostril of a horse,down the digestive tract which you monitor visually so as not to mistakenly go down the lung.Once in place a funnel is attached to the external end into which you pour the desired liquids wether they be electrolytes or deworming agents,and the funnel is raised to create maximum downward flow.The advantage of this method over orally ingested preparations is the gaurentee of delivery to the gut.It is also the means by which you milkshake a horse using bicarbonate of soda.
The Coronation Cup is the exception which proves the rule.Pace is falsely attributed to be "judged " in Dettori’s case when its to do with how easily the horse is travelling.What seperates him from Mcevoy for example is the initiative he shows to burn the energy left,plus being able to pull the whip through,competent with both hands,and the ability to open his knees and press down his chest staying very compact in a finish.Fallon is old school,dependent on others to make the running,rides long,sticks to the inside and careless in terms of keeping his mount straight in a finish and testament to the trueism that perserverence is worth a great deal more than talent.
The suggestion that a jockey is only as good as the horse might apply when all the human participants are of a like standard,but in any given race they are more than 50% of the equation.I might not like that fact either but reality is healthier than delusion.
AP might be able to tell us how much it costs enter and run in this race.
