Blame the EU – this is their idea of competition!
Tmwang50,

Rules are no longer anything to do with the Jockey Club – it’s the HRA that controls racing now.

There’s no rule covering this since it’s just pure chance that the other trainers that had entries opted not to declare. There’s certainly nothing to prevent a trainer having multiple runners in a race and there have been examples of more than five – I seem to remember Pipe having eight or nine in a Taunton handicap hurdle not long ago.

As for the owners, why would you be unhappy at running in a five runner race with prize money for most?

And a previous occurrence, didn’t an Irish trainer provide both runners in a Cartmel race earlier this year – I’m sure Graysonscolumn will be able to confirm.
If you start with £100 and earn 2% per day, every day of the year on which racing takes place, the miracle of compound interest would produce an end of year total of £109,641 after 350 days betting.

Which is the best possible demonstration of why something that sounds straightforward isn’t at all easy in practice, otherwise we’d all be seriously wealthy.
The only remaining mystery is how Prescott is going to explain that to the owners that paid 57,000 gns.

Pulled very hard for four furlongs and beat one home.

Bold Fire won a mares novice chase at Huntingdon in which my trainer saddled the second. He reckons that she’s the strongest 4-y-old mare he’s seen and could easily pass for a 6-y-old.

With the 4-y-old and mare weight allowances putting her on just 10st 1lb, he reckons she’s a certainty and he’s worried about how the handicapper might view the Huntingdon race if she does win!
Cormack,

I don’t think it’s subconcious at all, but calculated. They have two main types of customer – the corporate jolly, who comes for one day, doesn’t pay for his ticket himself and for whom the admission price is lost in the overall cost anyway – and the four day diehard who has travel and accomodation costs to cover as well and again the admission charge is rather lost as part of the overall cost of the week.

It would be interesting to hear from any TRF members in Ireland who make the trip every year as to what percentage of their expected total spend goes on the admission – and whether they are sufficiently dismayed by the 2007 prices to be deterred from coming over.

For myself, who lives within driving distance of Cheltenham, I stopped going several years ago after fifteen years of not missing a day. As an annual member, my costs approximately tripled in that fifteen year period. In particular a reserved seat in the main stand went up from £35 to £105 (that’s on top of the annual badge cost) and I know that price has at least doubled again since.

But it was mostly the discomfort of the crowd and the pain of the journey that resulted that caused me to give up and settle for the TV. Hard to believe now but my diary entry for a festival in the early 80’s reports a crowd of less than 20,000 on the first day and only 35,000 for the Gold Cup.

Mind you it’s the same everywhere – how do you measure £65 for Champion Hurdle day against £30 for an ordinary evening meeting at Newmarket followed by an hour of INXS, which is the first group due on next year.

apracing, if you consider race-fixing to defraud punters a minor matter, I’d like to know what you consider a major matter?

    Yeats,

Terrorism, murder, rape, kidnapping, armed robbery ?

    DB,

My understanding is that Great Leighs are paying out that amount. The other AW tracks certainly aren’t that keen on taking these fixtures at short notice, because they can’t find sponsors or sell the corporate or restaurant facilities. So they don’t make any money from them.

The penalty is imposed by the BHB and was part of the open bidding process for fixtures that was introduced after the OFT investigation. Great Leighs knew the rules when they stated they would be ready to open in October 2006.
Steve,

First meeting is now scheduled for Feb 22nd, using temporary stands in the centre of the track, with the main grandstand due to open in September.

They are currently paying £15,000 per fixture for the meetings that are being transferred to other tracks, so they have a significant incentive to hit that target.
I’d nominate the British so-called justice system.

Whatever you think about the rights and wrongs of the case involving Fallon and others, and whilst it might be a big deal to our minority interest, really it’s just a petty fraud. I find it difficult to have much faith in a system that takes 18 months plus to complete an investigation and then expects the defendants to wait another 18 months for a trial in such a minor matter.

Not to mention the evidence produced on this forum that the police only started looking for ‘victims’ of this fraud after they had already charged people.
Horsestats,

That’s a different Alan Potts – mine don’t run in my name anyway.

    Yeats,

Fair point, although my complaint was mainly about the lack of consistency in how the handicappers treat turf and AW ratings. And that was reinforced as Salute was raised 4lbs for the Wolverhampton win on his AW mark, but his turf mark was left unchanged – the exact opposite of what the same man did six weeks earlier!
Thanks again everyone – Rab Havlin has been on board for all four wins since I bought this horse and he knows him better than anyone. He’s ridden winners for me before this as well and I’ve always rated him.

Mind you, if I owned any of Salute’s ten rivals this evening, I’d be unhappy with the way they allowed Salute a soft time close to a slow pace.

Never previously owned a horse that won three races in a calendar year – it’s fun (and a lot cheaper than having one that never wins) !
According to the report in the Post today, two of the deaths were due to the horses suffering a heart attack during the race – can’t see any way you can blame the surface or the course for that.

I haven’t seen anything that would persuade me to avoid Wolverhampton as an owner, although to be fair, the issue won’t arise as both horses will be resting for the next two to three months after tomorrow.
Let’s look at the evidence – this man has the ability to churn out yards of meaningless statistics and assorted gardbage. He has the belief that what he claims is undoubtedly the gospel truth in the face of overwhelming counter evidence.

He has shown the capacity to ignore all questions put to him, responding to reasonable requests with more random statements of his creed.

He is plainly totally detached from the real world, devoid of humour and impervious to criticism.

There is no question that this man should be the next Chancellor of the Exchequer !
