I’m on Virgin Media. Can’t get Sky because of the position of my house relative to the satellite. ATR is free, RUK is £15 per month. Don’t see how anyone can complain about a FREE service.
Come on, I can’t believe people really think Murtagh decided in a split second travelling at what 35mph "Oh, I can see way over to my left and behind me another horse in my team coming up. Just like Aidan said would happen, he is so clever. Goodness me those two English horses to my side are a threat I know I’ll whack my horse and he will veer violently to his left and take them out. Now brace yourself Johnny, you don’t want to fall off and get trampled, boy that will hurt. And God forgive me if any of the other lads fall off because they will not be expecting this."

Hardasun actually had a bit of a Hardatime (sorry!). He had no-where to go at a couple of critical stages and got inerfered with a couple of times and Murtagh pretty much stopped riding on him. He will do better.
Full marks to the Godolphin horse – it was a very strange race and his adaptablity to tactics saw him through.
Good luck to him, he takes the big risk he deserves it when he wins.
And he puts money back in to the sport. Not just in this case and in many others it unfortunately seems we pay the police and CPS – and in fact most other public bodies – to do their job half the time and to spin reasons for failing to do their job properly the other half of the time.
I noticed in some footage today of the horses after the line, so looking at them from behind, there was a lot of turf kicked-up, looked like soft ground rather than good dry ground. I wonder if the top few inches of soil are loose, maybe not well knitted with roots. That would maybe cause horses to lose footing or slip and hence injuries.
Look at how Derby winners perform afterwards. Authorised is unusual in that he won the Juddmonte and a good second at Sandown; mostDerby winners never win at the highest level again, many do not even race at the highest level again.
Maybe that body language is saying "I don’t want to ruin the horse" and of course can’t really come out and say that.
Arc? Breeders Cup ?
There must be a "Nicholls" effect. If he takes £4m of the available prize money, and so by inference a good chunk of the races, there is less to go round for everyone else.
April 26, 2008 at 17:06 in reply to: C4 showing ‘Deal or No Deal’ over Guardian Classic Trial #160079I know,it’s really sad.
Last week when they should have been showing the Craven meeting they had two 1950’s black and white films !
It really annoys me. Many people have no idea how this works and are being ripped off.
Again, I disagree ~ this move allows the on course layers to be more competitive, not less so, and bookmakers boards have the each way terms clearly published.
Rory, explain to me how offering a smaller fraction (than 1/4) is more competitive?
Some are clearly marked, others (especially the older boards rather than electronic boards) are less so. However clear, a lot of casual punters don’t understand, or assume they are all the same, and in my opinion are being taken for a ride.
Started seeing 1/5 odds on 16+ handicaps at Doncaster St Leger last year and it seems to have spread since then. Not seen 1/6 odds yet!

Animals are far more intelligent than given credit for, and smarter than some humans. It’s just that they can’t talk.
…, or write, or read, or invent things, or use a computer, or build its own stable or …or… well, I think you get the picture.

No, horse (or any other animal for that matter) is smarter than a human. Fact !

That is assuming human definition of smart, i.e. being able to write, read, use a computer.
Now a horse may think "no human (or any oher animal for that matter) is smarter than a horse. Fact!"
I don’t see how a horse injuring himself running loose can count as ammunition for the Animal Aid nutters. Isn’t running loose what these people want for horses?
That’s a really stupid comment. Running without a rider in the national is not running loose. They are not nutters. Many are sensible people who care a lot about animals. A few are extremist troublemakers who latch onto any cause for a bit of anti-establishment argy.
So, hands up all those who want horses to die in racing? Hands up those who don’t care? Hopefully not many; the rest need to work to achieve an acceptable balance of risk in the sport. In the national that means continuing to improve the safety of the fences, having space outside the fences as ginger suggests, maybe reducing the field a little.
Ask a huntsman whether we can just ignore the animal rights "nutters" …
It was quite a funny interview actually. BBC always fawn over the Sheikh ("he has got a country to run after all chortle"); I was waiting for Thommo to call him Sheikh Mo.
Maybe after the Guinneas – "Sheikh Mo, did you buy the wrong horses?"
It depends what you are expecting. A racing pundit with a mine of information he is not; a jovial presenter with a good chat yes he is.
Difficult betting races for me.
It is nice seeing the joy at winning in some of the riders. I saw a hunter chase at Stratford a bit ago, only a couple of thousand to the winner, the jockey passed the line as if he had won the Gold Cup!
Order of merit is a good prize for owner and stable, not to be sneezed at.
The weather forecast for Aintree currently has lots of rain in it between today and Tuesday; it may end up being very soft on Thursday. Would either of them run on bad ground?
Yes, had a little dabble. You do need to understand the maths of your bet so you know your maximum risk.
Betting on the result of a race is a little less risky than some other spreads as the best a horse can do is come 1st and the worst is unplaced; compared to say number of bookings that could exceptionally go very high.Sportingindex usually have a stand when they are sposoring a race and they do a "competition". Pick 2 horses and "win" £100/75/50/25 for 1st/2nd/3rd/4th (whichever horse does best). So best find a 4-runner race or fewer with an odds-on favourite and pick 2 horses from the same race, then you are guaranteed some winnings.
Then to claim your winnings you register with them and make 2 bets with at least £25 risk. So say you have won £100 in the competition you are guaranteed to come out £50 ahead, and maybe better if your bets win some. One warning, when you open an account they will run a credit check so be aware if you have concerns about your credit score.
