It amazes me why people will pay £25+ to get in a racecourse then spend all day inside drinking overpriced booze and not actually go outside and see the horses and the races! Absolutely amazes me. Or when you walk through a grandstand after the feature race and see people sat eating their burger totally oblivious to what is happening.

There is no cheating in the game

, connections of horses beaten by

a jockey breaking the whip rules

rarely if ever complain, which is as it should be.

:D If there’s no cheating how can a jockey break the rules ?

Rishi. As a presenter he’s affable, articulate, not full of hype. Cringy at the post-race interviews but everyone is, they are a silly idea.

For the GN you need to appeal to the occassional viewer not the anorack.

You’re bang on David, he’s got it wrong and as is often the case approaches the argument from the wrong angle.

It’s a rules/cheating/integrity issue, whether the limit is 1 strike, 10, 50. If the limit is 50 it ALSO becomes a welfare/marketing issue, but it’s two arguments – the right limit to improve the popularity of the sport AND how to enforce the rules whatever they are and prevent cheating.

And the same old argument "think about the ramifications of introducing such a rule. Imagine how damaging it would be for the sport if the first and/or second home in the Aintree Grand National were disqualified due to their riders breaking the whip rules? It would be horrendous". Yes it would, and it would NOT HAPPEN. Imagine the stupidity of a rider knowingly throwing away the Grand National!

I must admit I quite like Warwick as a racecouse.
I like the views at a track as I am old fashioned and use binoculars to watch the race which so few people do these days and Warwick is a good view.
The worst viewing tracks I have been to are Cartmel and Chepstow so they would be my 2 worst racecourses

I like the racecourse and the viewing; the management make it really hard to enjoy going there nowadays. Pricey as well considering the quality of races most days.

    I second warwick.

Mess up the watering in summer. Believe the weather forecast and don’t use the frost covers they have available in winter. Time for the clerk to find a new career I think. I mean come on, no-one believes a weather forecast!

And don’t get me started on the terrible attitude to customers.

Many of the doom-laden arguments against disqualification assume the current state would persist, i.e. the current level of rule-breaking would remain the same despite the increased penalties.

    They would not.

Once the jockey loses his share of the prize, the trainer loses their share of the prize, the owners lose their money, the flat owners lose breeding kudos, most of the rule-breaking will stop. The odd mentally-challenged jockey who can’t count or control himself will find it difficult to get good rides.

The possible problems around betting confusion and the potential for cheating there can be avoided by bookmakers and exchanges having to pay on both first past the post and any amended result. Yes they will squeal but they take enough money out of racing they can toe the line on this if they want to stay in the game. Also, as above, after a few weeks of a new regime I believe transgressions would be very rare indeed.

With me it’s not the cruelty question, its the cheating – ignoring the rules and knowing you will keep the race. Compare with the penalty on Richard Johnson for a mistake taking the wrong course. It just doesn’t make sense; deliberate cheating and unintentional mistake, one with significant profit/benefit the other with none, very similar penalties. Just wrong.

By the way not pocket talk I had a nice win from Mr Condon.

People are turning to Farage because he claims to represent them. Conservatives represent a tiny minority of rich businessmen, labour represent class envy and ridiculous political correctness, liberals represent themselves. Who is left for the working class, middle class, just want to work hard, support the less fortunate in their community and get on in life?

Terrible for poor Authorship, so unneccessary. It was clear he was struggling on the rail very short of room for some time a shame the others didn’t give a bit of ground.

Happens all the time. I listened to a large Newmarket trainer telling a jockeys young lad "Mine isn’t going to be doing much I just want him to get used to going past the crowd" before a maiden this summer. Said and received as if it were no more unusual or secret or underhand than saying "your did rode well last night".

Said horse was 2nd favourite, looked very well, went to post relaxed and powerfully, cantered back near last rider did nothing.

If only the organisations that market horseracing could understand this thread, I don’t think they do. And then have the skill and imagination to project the feelings in their initiatives.

Which countries disqualify horses for excessive use of the whip?

Excessive use of the whip isn’t the point, breaking the rules is. It doesn’t matter whether the rule is whip, interference, weight, drugs; connections should not be allowed to gain by breaking them.

Why is it right for a horse to be disqualified if the rider weighs-in light but not if the rider uses the whip more than the permitted level? Presumably the rider believes using the whip more gives an advantage, otherwise why would he do it?

Who brought America into the subject aji?

Footballers break the rules all the time and even cheat, another good example in the Stoke match yesterday by Victor Moses but their team don’t lose the match. If they commit a foul they may get a free kick against them or a player may get booked but they don’t automatically lose the match.

Doyle broke the harsh rules and a received a harsh ban but it’s cloud cuckoo land to suggest the horse should lose the race because of whip use.

Which countries disqualify for whip offences?

British racing would be a laughing stock with such a rule.

    Well, you did, and Andy.

The penalties for cheating in many sports attempt to redress the balance e.g. in football bring a player down in proximity to the goal, so with a good chance of scoring, and a penalty is awarded to give that chance.

In UK racing break the rules and usually the penalty is afterwards and doesn’t affect the result. The penalties on James give Al Kazeems connections no redress, no possibility of winning the race that they might have done had James stuck to the rules AS THEIR RIDER DID.

It is just your opinion the whip rules are harsh; that is irrelevant, they are the rules. It is many peoples opinion the french interference rules are harsh; again irrelevant. The point is the rules are the rules in whatever country a race takes place and they need to be adhered to with severe penalties when they are broken. It’s about fairness and integrity.
