Araldo had died also, after kicking out at a fence when some idiot waved a flag at him after the race.
Idiot? It was a child waving a flag.
November 4, 2014 at 11:50 #494491Apologies for not getting my facts right steve

November 4, 2014 at 12:12 #494497Big day missed the Araldo flag waving… will try check it out, 2 casualties, not good.
November 4, 2014 at 12:40 #494498I backed Araldo and it always hurts even more when that happens. Trouble is, I got interested in flat staying races because I wanted to get away from the injuries/fatalities over the jumps. I always think of Persian Punch on Melbourne Cup day, even though he was only placed. Told my daughter I couldn’t understand why I enjoy listening to it on the radio so much, and she said it’s because, if you have the radio on in the background, it’s as if you’re actually ‘in’ Australia. I hadn’t thought of that. I don’t know why I only have it on one day a year; maybe if I listen to it more often I can imagine I live somewhere warm and sunny

I sincerely hope the horse’s owners sue them.
Totally preventable. Racecourse needs to take action too so it can’t happen again. Who needs to wave a flag at a racecourse anyway. Just the starter and his team, no one else.November 4, 2014 at 14:45 #494509I do remember Nick the Briefs trainer complaining that, when he ran against Desert Orchid he was put off by all the children waving flags at the fences as Dessie went past. Thought he was being a bit mean spirited at the time but I can see where he was coming from now. I don’t know what Araldo kicked; I hope they don’t have metal rails over there

November 5, 2014 at 17:46 #494572I read that partial owners of the recent Melbourne Cup(2014) winner were the Power brothers,Walter and Robert.Do they own any horses trained in GB or Ireland?
November 5, 2014 at 20:19 #494582The problem is that the people that run racecourses sometimes do not appear to have any idea about equine behaviour.
Anybody with an ounce of horse sense knowns you do NOT wave a flapping flag in the air near a horse. Let alone a hyped up thoroughbred who has has just finished a race.
I was at Cheltenham this year and saw the incident with Daryl Jacob. The course organisers had fixed wooden sponsorship boards below the white railings next to the opening to the all weather gallop track down to the start of the race. The horse spooked at the boards and dumped poor Daryl into the white railings. Again, this was totally avoidable for anybody who has spent time around horses…
When are these course organisers going to learn?!
November 5, 2014 at 22:31 #494584JollyP – I’m usually at Ascot so if you’re planning to attend let me know and I’ll buy you a Fosters, provided you buy me something decent in return!
I have to say that the Cup is a very exciting race, both the build up and to watch, the flat equivalent of the Grand National. It’s easy to see why it is so popular.

Yes but there are plenty of flags at cheltenham..
Also, any idiot knows not to shout and roar at a horse in the yard but we do that as a crowd at the racecourse. I think my point is that its not that easy to provide an environment thats completely stress free to a horse. Its rather amazing what some of them can actually get upset over.SHL
November 6, 2014 at 17:21 #494632The worst thing you can wave at a horse, imo, is a plastic bag. They’re usually fine with such things as articulated lorries thundering past them, but go bonkers if a plastic bag is lying by the side of the road.

Now
these
are what I call flags. (Varenne post-race)

Scotland’s Chris Hoy has past his best if he needs equine help in a velodrome

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Well for me a bit of a whirlwind, a good win then out at work for 2 weeks in the never never…First things with Araldo such a shame, would have thought he was too buggered after the cup to spook like that, but always thought the crowds down the race to the track were too close.Looking at both sides p#ssed off from a racing side but to the once a year maybe just enjoying themselves.Admire Rakti got me the cash in the Caufield Cup would gladly forgo it for him to still be around, but it was like a human having a heart attack andit wwasn’t in the last 2 to 3 furlongs. Think the race copped a bit after 2 horses died, but it was in all a freakish event.Well was told by ‘her indoors’ ( why don’t we have a great show like Minder these days…) that can’t go to Royal Ascot this year….But booked… all i have to do is tell her….before June….So David, buying me a Foster’s is about on par with punching me in the face… A bit like Neighbors and Home and Away David, we give it to you….Please don’t give it back…..So i think maybe a Heineken or Becks may be in order! Though i have the upper hand with the ‘Ball and Chain’, travelled a lot around the world the last few years, she hated every where but…. Santorini last year….. So…’Guess where we are going this year darling’… SANTORINI……Woohoo….And TAPK she is a Nottingham girl, so you have a lot to answer for….Funny though how her indoors loves me buying the hats , shoes and dresses for RA, thats fine….Anyway i digress…..Actully did RA, Santorini, Kinsale in Ireland and Dolgellau in Wales.Loved them all found Ireland surprisely expensive, though still very nice, Loved Wales. Maybe we should have a travel section on here where we can pass on our tips…Santorini for those who have not been, go it is wonderful. …So good, though the down side is it seems all the beautiful people go…I hate it when i can’t compete…. Anyway Cormak it’s a date, i shall bring a Margaret River wine from here, just tell me red or white…All is good i have 7 months to tell the wife i have booked….
