Is the proven class going to prevail yet again?
New Approach whipped everyone for toe in the Vodafone Derby and if Manning had the express lane he could have shaken the horse up to a length and possibly more on his rivals.
Like the Belmont is to the Triple Crown, I think the Irish Derby is a test of the champion.
Surely the start Tartan Bearer gave to New Approach at Epsom off a less-than-riveting tempo spelled the doom of the brother of Golan? Surely when these horses are actually required to stay, the power of stamina shall prevail?
Type out your gospels, gentlemen!
June 25, 2008 at 15:06 #170060I think Casual Conquest will improve a lot fromt Epsom, maybe not enough to beat NA though, don’t discount a big run from a Ballydoyle horse either
June 25, 2008 at 15:39 #170065I made the mistake of going against New Approach last time out, in light of his two Guineas seconds. I shall be returning to the fold and backing him with confidence.
He should again have too much finishing speed for his rivals and I shall be very surprised if he gets turned over at the Curragh.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 25, 2008 at 15:44 #170066I also think NA will win hands down granted a clearer run also it has been raining over here so that should suit as well!!! i know it suits a few others but cant see past NA
June 25, 2008 at 15:54 #170068I think the second and third home at epsom may have improvement in them.
However, New Approach had only a forthnight from the Irish Guineas to epsom, and only 9 days to train for a distance 50% further than anything he had ran at previously. He refused to settle for the first three furlongs, but still cut through the pack like they were giving him 10lbs in the last few furlongs. If he settles this time, it should be a cakewalk.

My Bad
June 25, 2008 at 16:32 #170075Curtain call won the Beresford stakes here last year and Fran Berry is back on….and with the rain should suit him i fancy him for a palce this time…..what has Jamie boy done??
June 26, 2008 at 09:59 #170157I’m not overwhelmingly convinced about New Approach but I would be prepared to play him very strongly regardless. However, with the reports that he could start as short as 2/1 on, I am thoroughly disappointed.
It’s simply a question of pace. I’m not sure if New Approach will be any more sedated than at Epsom under softer conditions and something else to drive their way to the finish whilst New Approach is stretched for stamina is a distinct possibility.
At least Paddy Power are searching for one to up-end the favourite.
What’s left for me is to watch the Vodafone Derby a few hundred times.
June 26, 2008 at 20:22 #170263I’m rather stubbornly (& probably foolishly) going to stick with Washington Irving. In finishing 5th in the Epsom Derby, he managed to get 4 lengths closer to Casual Conquest than he did in the Derrinstown. I don’t agree with the RP comment that he was weakening at Epsom either, I felt he was staying on (slowly) after being a bit short of room.
Imo, WA doesn’t seem to possess a turn of foot (or hasn’t shown it yet). He is just one of these high-class, one-paced gallopers. It may be that a strong pace throughout and the chance of easy ground may help him. I’m thinking that if it became a test of speed, the likes of Tartan Bearer & New Approach would leave him standing.
Co-incedently, last year’s Irish Derby winner had also finished a one-paced 5th in the Epsom Derby.
June 26, 2008 at 21:28 #170273New Approach will win if hes at his best..i am sure
But the price (never one i play) is prohibitive given that hes had three tough races this season. That would be my concern
June 26, 2008 at 22:51 #170281New Approach without a doubt. I can’t believe how many good judges (in the racing weeklys) believe that Tartan Bearer or Casual Conquest will improve past him… that’s madness. He’s simply a superior animal to them. He beat them comfortably at Epsom after pulling hard and meeting trouble in running; he’s the only Group 1-winner in the field; and he nearly beat Henrythenavigator over 1m while most of these are being considered for this year’s St. Leger. It’s easier to make a case for him winning by more this time than for the form being reversed.
June 26, 2008 at 23:41 #170284Talk of him starting at 1/2 is just bookmaker hype designed to part credulous punters from their cash. Slight odds-on is about right. The doubt would be his busy season but not enough to make me support anything which finished behind him. If there is a bet it might be Tartan Bearer each-way but I reckon I’ll be watching this one.

With his usual multiple entry, AoB once again holds the key to the pace and (imo) their number one Allesandro Volta would need a searching test if he is to figure in the finish.
On that assumption, and given that the ground is likely to be softer than Epsom, I think there is a strong case for Tartan Bearer to turn around the Derby form and outstay New Approach and the others.June 27, 2008 at 12:56 #170347I’m rather stubbornly (& probably foolishly) going to stick with Washington Irving. John Murtagh has gone for alasandra Volta!!!!
June 27, 2008 at 13:16 #170351The form book says there is only one winner and unless his 3 starts have taken too much out of him very hard to oppose New Approach.
June 27, 2008 at 14:16 #170359Welcome to the forum thebrigadier, New Approach for me aswell, superb in the English version and he did’nt look comfortable or settled in that one and was still the winner.
