Not often I get weighed in on the flat but I would kick myself for a week if I didn’t grab all the 10/11 I could get about New Approach.
Racings a funny old game and it is always much easier on paper than it is when reality sets in.
I personally don’t think there is a colt around who could beat him except for New Approach himself.
If he settles he wins as far as I am concerned……If he doesn’t settle and takes too much out of himslef in the early stages then he could easily be beaten.
It has to be remembered pre-Derby he was being trained somewhat differently as his tragets were 1 mile races. They had only a short time to try and teach him to settle so they could drop him in on the day………with that bit more time under his belt hopefully he won’t repeat the antics he displayed at Epsom (I am still amazed he had enough left in the tank to win having pulled so hard)……….That’s the chances you take in racing when punting and a chance I decided is worth the gamble.
Roll on Sunday

Or alternatively, as he proved at epsom, he could still win…
June 27, 2008 at 19:17 #170401Jim Bolger has said that New Approach might not run on sunday.

June 27, 2008 at 20:30 #170407Bit of a contrast between Mr Bolger’s previous form and his prompt revelation of a problem tonight…could he be learning?

I think possibly so….I imagine if this was only a couple of months ago, he would have just went to bed and let it develop.

June 28, 2008 at 07:03 #170452John Murtagh has gone for alasandra Volta!!!!
That wouldn’t worry me too much. J.Murtagh chose the wrong one at Epsom. Last year K.Fallon chose the wrong one in this race. I’m sure Murtagh had the choice, but the trainer seems quite willing to put C.O’Donoghue on some decent horses this year.
I’m more concerned about Washington Irving’s lack of gears. I was just thinking that with a clear run, he may be able to build a fair bit of momentum over the last few furlongs, which is imo what he needs. Maybe he’ll run into a place, maybe he’s still improving, maybe not!
June 28, 2008 at 08:46 #170458Hello,
CURTAIN CALL for me.
Well fancied for Epsom Derby, eased down, has a seasoned Irish jockey aboard. It will do for me.

regards,
doyley

June 28, 2008 at 13:51 #170535Consider this.
Bashkirov freewheels to a 3-4 length margin on Hindu Kush, who furthermore adds another 4-6 lengths back to the peloton.
Best option to neutralise New Approach’s primary strength of outstanding toe and to a lesser extent – cruising speed.
Would certainly play into the hands of Washington Irving and/or Alessandro Volta but on the flipside, both those two were ultimately outclassed by Tartan Bearer, whom would most likely thrive on the aforementioned Coolmore team tactic, and hence no point to the tactic being played out if the goal of victory is closer to failure than success.
Or – would Coolmore want to ruin New Approach for the sake of holding their superiority over Darley?
June 28, 2008 at 14:11 #170539I don’t really follow you Mr D: Are you saying they may ignore the pacemakers and produce a false pace? I don’t think Kevin Manning will have any hesitation in being fairly handy if there’s no pace- after all we now know he stays 12f, which was in doubt until Epsom. I’d say the others’ best chance is to try and leave him isolated without cover in the hope that he pulls again- but with the benefit of another 3 weeks distance training that is surely less likely tomorrow. The biggest doubts are surely the injury and the fatigue factor, not the run of the race.
June 28, 2008 at 14:17 #170542I’m saying that Coolmore team tactics set a lightning tempo and run the sprint out of New Approach – which won him the Vodafone Derby and clearly is the key to his success tomorrow.
June 28, 2008 at 14:24 #170545I don’t think a fast pace will be a problem. In fairness if you asked Bolger and Manning I reckon they’d prefer a decent gallop to get him settled. A horse that finishes like he did after pulling so hard doesn’t have many stamina questions to answer, IMHO- but injury and a few quick races do worry me.

I find it intriguing that J Murtagh misses the relatively easier pickings of riding Soldier of Fortune to victory at St Cloud to stay at home and ride the apparently unfancied Allesandro Volta in this.
Didn’t handle Lingfield at all well in a front running role, and consequently wasn’t given the ride you’d expect for a strong galloping horse at Epsom. Has an army of pacemakers to ensure a proper test today and, at double figure odds, well worth an each way play, whether the favourite runs or not.June 29, 2008 at 09:13 #170661New Approach doesn’t run according to the RP website.
June 29, 2008 at 16:25 #170750So what did everyone make of the irish derby?
