Thankfully ,I wont be seeing you again , or indeed any of the low grade AW racing that your channel covers or any Irish Racing which is a real lottery
Having been tempted too many times I have finally removed the channel from my Sky Sub and saved a pound as well , what a result
From now onwards its Racing Uk where racing not betting comes first , long may it reign supreme
have fun

July 10, 2008 at 09:39 #172622RUK has better pundits in general, otherwise I dont see much difference. In fact ATR’s coverage of general racing issues/news and interaction with viewers is superior to RUK imo. Plus they have a fantastic website. Nothing is perfect but I wouldnt be canceling to save a quid thats for sure.
July 10, 2008 at 09:56 #172625good luck to you Cav , it was’nt the pound saving that prompted my action , it was the whole effort to sway punters to lose more cash to the bookmakers that fund the station
Each action they take is carefully orchestrated , each interview , each comment , it all has a common aim , to ensure you lose more cash to their paymasters
Enjoy the adverts

July 10, 2008 at 10:10 #172627Graham Cunningham on RUK yesterday had a sly crack at the ad-breaks on ATR.
Seems there was a footy match between ATR and RUK staff which RUK won 6-2.
Cunningham reckoned that the ATR side played really well, except that almost every time they got into a scoring position they had to go to an ad break.

quality , I must have missed that one , I like Graham and love the way Nick Luck eggs him on , its part of the viewing experience that I enjoyHe is a pretty good Pundit , and knows his stuff , also think Eddie Freemantle is improving by the day if hes not carefull he could become star material

July 10, 2008 at 10:25 #172631I understand the decision to boycott ATR on the grounds of bookmaker marketing but I think RUK are progressing quickly down the same route.
The creeping growth in RUK adverts has stepped up a few gears and we are at an unacceptable level. This is compounded by the need for RUK to give airtime to the reps from the bookmakers paying for the adverts. These mouthpieces spout nothing but PR rubbish and add nothing to the coverage.
The difference between free-to-air and the subscription service very small and I cannot see how RUK can justify the subs.
July 10, 2008 at 10:29 #172633I wish ATR would do some kind of "Racing Replay" like RUK do. I know you can view the races on the website, but I find myself missing an awful lot of ATR races.
I agree with Wallace about the reps. There obviously just there as fillers between races (and to earn RUK a few quid no-doubt).
July 10, 2008 at 10:30 #172634Sorry Ricky, wasnt implying you were cheap

Your correct, ATR is carefully set up to separate punters from their cash, definatley not as punter friendly as they’d have you believe. RUK’s coverage is becoming more bookmaker infested by the week and when you add in the trade daily ¨Bookmakers Post¨ you see how effective the firms PR departments are, suckering people into following their marked cards. But thats ok once you know whats going on and I wouldnt be without it to be honest.
Its amazing when you realise that the authority who provides the bookmakers with this billion pound a year cash cow has to make do with a maketing department of one.
July 10, 2008 at 10:37 #172635The ads on RUK are getting very annoying
July 10, 2008 at 10:45 #172639thanks CaV , its nice to know that someone agrees with my view , as to be honest the ATR scenario of treating viewers like betting shop punters was nagging at me for ages
Agree with posts that Ruk are starting to have too many ads , but still the entire ethos and approach are far better that the dreaded 415 experience
cheers

July 10, 2008 at 11:28 #172642Actually prefer ATR. Probably because they cover Irish racing too.
July 10, 2008 at 12:13 #172648I prefer ATR by a proportion of 70:30.
The free channel has friendlier pundits, offers excellent interaction through e-mails, interesting features such as morning trainer interviews and of course, Racing News and Get On!
(Er, what are RUK showing right now?).
And of course, ATR offer fantastic US racing (which Setanta/RUK wouldn’t invest in, and dumped at the first opportunity, despite having the prime opportunity to show Hollywood, Del Mar, Churchill etc in the company of gurus like Jeff Siegel).
RUK have the racecourses I want to see (so they can pretty much behave how they like according to the laws of supply and demand). They also have Dave Nevison, Lydia and Steve, convenient replay loops and the Sales shows last autumn were fantastic.
But really, that’s it. That’s your lot. The channel just isn’t worth the subscription.
But the main thing that annoys me about RUK is that the majority of their pundits (and I would include the Mazola-slick Graham Cunningham in this), give the impression that they are just the tiniest, eensiest, just the teeniest weeniest bit superior to you and I. Which gets spectacularly on my wangers.
And as for ads, Ricky? What is a remote for? Spin over to 906 or find some monster truck action while the ads are on.
July 10, 2008 at 12:25 #172650I realise that we all have different tastes but I do find it hard to believe that people prefer ATR to RUK.
I accept the point about the Irish coverage, it is the only chance to see coverage of that racing, but that coverage is so awful.
As is the American racing coverage……………any channel that thinks that Dale McKeown has any claim to being a presenter has serious problems, in my opinion.
Are the presenters on RUK on the smug side?…………..yes, some very definitely are, but doesn’t that comment apply to so many people who appear as presenters on our TV screens.

July 10, 2008 at 13:25 #172660The ONLY good thing about ATR is the red button service. Being able to opt out of the advert brainwashing and cliché ridden pundits and presenters is great. I would pay to be able to do this on RUK.
July 10, 2008 at 13:35 #172662Firefox , I guess you work for ATR , otherwise you have missed my point , which I will repeat , its a bookies channel run for and by them
If you dont get this then just sit back and enjoy losing your dough at sunny southwell et all
have fun
Ricky
July 10, 2008 at 13:54 #172666Ricky…how are ATR going to fund themselves without the close ties to bookies ?
July 10, 2008 at 14:17 #172677Black Sam , agree totally , but it comes with a price ………, question is ,are you prepared to pay ??
the only difference between their coverage and betting shops is the lack of roulette machines ………..
folk need to consider very carefully the stuff being belted out , otherwise the red button or mute comes in handy , then the only other handicap is low grade dross , particularily in winter , most races are being contested for less than 2k , and you are actually thinking about betting and watching those , well if so I wish you the best
cheers
