September 12, 2022 at 18:02 #1614547I’ll be taking more interest than usual in the cards at Listowel and Fairyhouse.
And I might order a delivered Indian takeaway – those excellent Asian lads can be relied upon to be open all hours and if so they shall be once again rewarded by Chezza’s custom.
I think a King Prawn Pathia and pilau rice might be in order.

Even in sadness today’s coverage reminded the wider public and the world that nobody does these events better.
Long live the new King

September 12, 2022 at 18:34 #1614553Good to see condemnation from across the spectrum Cork. Agree with you that it’s not necessarily helpful to their cause but arresting them is outrageous frankly. Whilst some Monarchists may be cheering their arrest, what happens when it’s their turn to express a dissenting view?
September 12, 2022 at 18:44 #1614554Here’s my take on it – I’m a Republican, I think it’s all utter garbage, I happen to be walking past a local proclamation of the accession, there are families there, mum, dad, children, maybe grandad and grandma, all there for a historic occasion, grandma and grandad maybe talking about 1952 to the wide-eyed children, a moment for them to remember.
Maybe rabid Daily Mail reading types, maybe not, just there for the occasion – doesn’t actually matter.
Would it actually kill me to keep my abolitionist gob shut and let them enjoy the moment?
It’s not like Hitler just came to power.
That 45yo bloke was a selfish, attention-seeking, infantile, tool.
And that’s coming from a republican.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 12, 2022 at 18:50 #1614555Well I think it’s time I put my tuppence in. I’m genuinely sorry
that the Queen has died, I think I’ve already said that somewhere,
but the BBC ond others coverage, whilst totally expected, has me
searching through my recorded stuff, mostly thinking “why on earth
did I record that” for something to watch. However,I’m glad that I was flicking through the chanels, and watched
a little of the hearse going through Edinburgh towards St Giles Church.
Am I the only one who was watching at this bit, and it cheered me up
no end to the extent I guffawed for a good couple of mins. Some bloke
in the crowd was mouthing it off big style (no idea about what) when
he was grabbed, presumably by the collar, as he shot backwards at some
pace, I’m sure his feet must have been off the ground. I nearly choked
on my Yorkshire. I’m so glad I had tuned in at that point, it was
hilarious.Don’t get me wrong, whatever he was mouthing about, he was completely
out of order, it was the wrong time and place to be trying to make a
point and I’d imagine Royalists, and the rest of us would all be as one
on that.I wish I could find a clip of it, I’d play it over and over every time
I was bored. I’ve never seen anyone disappear backwards at that pace,
and I’ve nabbed a few collars in my time. Priceless.September 12, 2022 at 19:01 #1614556Ah my old detective powers have come to the fore at last, It seems he
was having a go at Prince Andrew, calling him “a sad old man ” amongst
other things. I don’t disagree with the sentiments, but regardless it
was the wrong time to cause a stooshie. I believe the crowd took it
into their own hands (good on them) before the old bill hauled him
away. Pillock…..but a precious moment nonetheless.September 12, 2022 at 19:51 #1614558“Whilst some Monarchists may be cheering their arrest, what happens when it’s their turn to express a dissenting view?”
Quite so. But as Brendan O’Neill mentioned in the Spectator article within the link, it is also incumbent on the other side of the political spectrum to defend the right of people to express traditional views which do not chime with fashionable opinion.
Free speech exists for everyone or no one.
September 12, 2022 at 19:55 #1614559It appears that the BBC has only received 670 complaints about their coverage. About 100 of them were complaints (justified in my view) of two silly young “journalists” in the newsroom taking pictures on their phones of Huw Edwards making the formal announcement of the Queen’s death.
The fact that the number of complaints is so low suggests to me that the BBC broadly got it right.
There are plenty of other channels to watch instead nowadays, so I don’t see why the BBC’s coverage is a problem.

Whilst republicanism versus monarchism is essentially a binary choice, there will always be loons on the extreme of any particular view who give the sensible majority who just want a civil discussion a bad name.
Neither they nor Plod come out well here imo.

And tbf of those 670, 554 were from me.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 12, 2022 at 20:06 #1614562An almost insignificant number next to the 100,000* for The Duke of Edinburgh’s death. It would appear that they learned their lesson in the eyes of the complaining public.
*currently unknown how many were from one Mr I Davies.
‘Free speech exists for everyone or no one.’
It really is that simple. Freedom of speech is not of course freedom from consequence but in this instance the consequence was too heavy handed.
September 12, 2022 at 20:52 #1614565Brillo is chairing a discussion about the monarchy on Channel 4, I’ve only just seen that it’s on. Could be something of an antidote to the rest of the coverage.
September 12, 2022 at 21:02 #1614568Inbetween gratuitous complaints under various aliases to the BBC about their saturation monarchy coverage, I offered my own independently-produced documentary: “Oliver Cromwell Had The Right Idea About Their Sort” but I’ve yet to receive a reply.
Apart from the warning from the Police, that is.
