The Queen has set an elevated benchmark that may not be bettered or even equaled by future Kings and Queens. My heart goes out to this extraordinary woman.

What name will Charles choose as he’s crowned.

His full name is Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor.

I kind of like King Arthur.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

Truly the end of an era; Queen Elizabeth II was a remarkable woman.

From one racing fan to another, may you rest in peace Ma’am.

Such sad news, she truly was a remarkable woman, RIP Ma’am.

Shame Charles has not chosen to be King Philip in honour of his father.

“What name will Charles choose as he’s crowned.”

Sounds like he will be King Charles III. Truss used the name in her speech and we can be fairly sure her speech was approved by the palace.

I’m not bothered either way regarding the monarchy but there,s no doubt the country will be marked by her passing , to have served so long and yet made so few mistakes ( handling of Diana’s death prob her biggest ) marked her as a remarkable woman , Charles has a monumental job on his hands trying to follow her , I fear he will struggle to remain as impartial as her RIP

“Charles has a monumental job on his hands trying to follow her”

As stated in my posting at the bottom of page one – and before this thread gets too “Daily Mail” for words – she did a tremendous job of fulfilling an outdated role over a lifetime.

It’s time to end it once and for all – much of what is wrong with this country stems from deference towards a monarch.

An admirable and dignified lady who never put a foot wrong over her long reign; and, as an individual, held in deep affection by a large swath of the public

I’ve no particular time or liking for Charles but I do feel a little sorry for him, as his tenure as monarch is likely to be troubled, as any affection for him is likely to come from just the diminishing band of hardcore royalists

The monarchy doomed? I dunno: better a King Charles as notional figurehead than a President insert-whatever-retired-politician-you-like perhaps

Anyway, well done old girl and RIP

Well said everyone. Have to say it was shocking to hear despite the six hours of coverage beforehand where it was becoming increasingly obvious what was going on.

    An impossible act to follow.

It might seem like a minor point but in our small world of racing, the Queen was a huge figure and her patronage was absolutely invaluable to the sport. Racing has lost the best friend it ever had.

Such a shame that her last runner at Epsom today finished second, beaten by a short head. She could not emulate her great grandfather Edward VII, who had a winner at Kempton on the day he died. His last words were confirming to his son that he had heard the result.

What does everyone think was her best horse , surely the Ascot gold cup was her greatest success

Highclere won the 1,000 Guineas and Prix de Diane.

Dunfermline won the Oaks and the St Leger in Silver Jubilee year.

She owned the winners of 4 of the classics. Only the Derby eluded her, alas.

Don’t know if they were the best, but I remember seeing Dunfermline win the St Leger on the telly and I was at York when Height Of Fashion won the Acomb on her racecourse debut.

Dunfermline would have to be up there. The only horse to defeat Alleged.
