“When I was 21, I pledged my life to the service of our people and I asked for God’s help to make good that vow. Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgement, I do not regret, or retract, one word of it.”

    What a woman.

When Height Of Fashion was beaten out of sight in the King George, Raceform Notebook declared she had been “well sold at £1 million.”

    They spoke too soon there.

Micheal Martin gave a nice speech. A lot of respect here, and a sad day.

Things won’t be the same again without her. It is a very sad day and the best bishes to the new King.

    May she rest in peace.

I am no royalist but am saddened by her passing. Whatever your views on monarchy, it’s the end of an era and has affected many people more deeply than they imagined. I have always had respect for Elizabeth, regardless of my republican leanings. That I hope (in vain I fear) that she will be the last monarch doesn’t mean that I can’t recognise that she was totally committed to the role, understood the constraints and did a good job (not convinced this is the case with Charles). Is cancelling all horse racing for 2 days (and maybe longer – another decision due tomorrow) an appropriate tribute to the most high profile supporter of racing we’ve ever had? I don’t think so. It’s the last thing she would have wanted. Apparently people who had bought tickets for Southwell tonight were treated shamefully. Reckon that’s the end for the Racing League (it’s an ill wind..).

Cancelling racing is a BHA decision straight out of the 19th century.

The reality is over half the country don’t even want a monarchy any more.

Trying to pretend that isn’t the case and imposing “marks of respect” and “mourning” on people is utterly pointless.

Like Tonge, I’m a Republican and hope the days of the monarchy are numbered, but I also recognise that she did a job she never applied for with immense dignity for a lifetime.

Many politicians and members of our own family embarrassed Britain on the world stage, but never her.

Is there a source for that statement that over half the country no longer want a monarchy? I thought polls still showed that the majority were in favour, with support increasing with age.

Yes, I held a vox pop consisting of: me, Oliver Cromwell and Piers Morgan.

Abolition of the monarchy won two-one in extra time.

Tbf it is great that The Queen’s beneficial impact on racing lives on after her sad demise – the awful Racing League got called off tonight.

    There’s always a silver lining….

Perhaps. But I think that much of that is centred on Elizabeth and that Charles does not command the same support. True also that “support increasing with age” but this isn’t a good thing in the long term https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/young-british-people-want-ditch-monarchy-poll-suggests-2021-05-20/

Tonge, re the age element, the question is whether people maintain their views on the monarchy as they age. If so, then the majority of royalists will of course decline as older people die off. But I suspect that there is also an element of the idealistic young becoming more conservative and in favour of the establishment as they age. We only have to look at our esteemed leader for how people can change their views!

Obviously I am talking in sweeping generalisations here.

“I am talking in sweeping generalisations here.”

    I seldom do anything else.

Anyway, how does a man cope when the entire planet suddenly goes full-on “Daily Mail” and you just know it’s a collective global condition that’s going to last at least a fortnight?

    Asking for a friend.

An unholy trinity if ever I heard one! Although you could fare far worse picking your three fantasy dinner party guests.

More than 50 years later, when the royal couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Philip said:

“The main lesson we’ve learned is that TOLERANCE is the essential ingredient of any happy marriage. “It may not be quite so important when things are going well but is absolutely vital when things get difficult….”

To look at the Queen’s face when Phillip said this and see how she kept her composure, but the people that knew reaslised exactly what was going through her mind. She fell in love with Phillip at 13. Well the rest is history but read between her brow lines and well – she got on with life and put personal dissapointments behind her. I think they had a good understanding of each other and both had a great sense of humour. Phillip also had a sense of duty. I was pleased to see they had a greater understanding in later life.

I admire her greatly for putting duty above her personal familial dissapointments. This is stoicism and taking responsibility – something many politicians could learn from.

Seven iconic decades – a dysfunctional family one could easily argue – all children divorced – but she kept going. If there was one big disappointment that might have hastened her end it was her favourite son Andrew.

She put duty before family – it must have been heartbreaking but she gritted her teeth and carried on.
It was an amazing life – deep respect – RIP

I’m never going to get used to seeing King Charles on our currency and postage stamps.

I will miss guessing the colour of the Queens Hat at Royal Ascot and her face lighting up when she has a winner.

Christmas Day won’t be the same without her Speech.

Charles will never win the affecton of the people as his mother did. She was a truly great Queen who dedicated her life to serving her country, her love of horses beyond compare and her face would light up when she was amongst them.

One young girl with her mother at Windsor to lay flowers this evening said she was like everybodys grandmother and she thought she would live forever.
Sadly even a Queen can’t do that.

Our Queen lived to celebrate 70 years on the Throne and to swear in her 15th Prime Minister. The last images of her a few days ago at Balmoral showed how much weight she had lost and how frail she had become but the twinkle in her eyes remained the same as when Paddington dropped in for tea and marmalade sandwiches at Buckingham Palace and he thanked her graciously for everything.

Goodnight Ma’am and with respect, don’t forget to switch out the lights on the way out. :rose:
