Harzand wasn’t one of the leaders in the early stages of the race, he was much closer to the rear than the front, and much closer to USAR than to Port Douglas, he was only about 3 lengths ahead of USAR. So his early pace was not all that different than USAR’s early pace. The sectional analysis shows that Port Douglas was 20 lengths ahead of ‘normal’ after 4f (to put it simply), which means that Harzand was about 12-13 lengths ahead and USAR was 10 lengths ahead. So USAR’s own early pace would also have been quite strong, and it’s no surprise that his run, down the stretch which was badly cut up from the previous day’s racing on soft ground, petered out.

US ARMY RANGER (IRE) has come a long way in a short space in time, barely 2 months from his debut, progressing significantly again, but just coming up short in his attempt to follow in the footsteps of Ruler of The World, also successful in the same 2 races as US Army Ranger prior to winning the Derby, looking to come with a winning run before the winner found more; raced well off the pace, showed signs of still being green, still plenty to do home turn, had to wait for gap over 3f out, good headway 2f out, challenged well inside final 1f, no extra final 100 yds; he is likely to have more to offer after just 3 starts and will presumably take in the Irish Derby next, with a rematch with the winner, assuming suitable ground, perhaps not so far back another time.
As you see from last sentence, someone else thinks he was not in the greatest position.I believe its all about opinions(you’ve read mine for what its worth) and thats what makes it so great. No one will ever know for sure, if he was ridden closer to the pace he would have won(as someone pointed out his petrol may have run out sooner)or he may not have wanted to go past.
June 9, 2016 at 09:50 #1250480nwalton, opinions indeed is what keep the game going. Nonetheless there is evidence here that UAR was not at the end of his energy tether. I don’t know how quickly the path across the course comes up after the winning post, but at that point, UAR was still striding out well, ears pricked as he went past Harzand, who himself was far from exhausted.
Also, whether through attitude or inexperience (and he’s entitled to the benefit of the doubt for now, especially given Epsom’s quirks) he seemed much more inclined to hang in behind others than to run past them.
Even when Moore initially tried to pull him out at the rear, he went back in again and had to be hauled out. UAR persisted with this hanging to the extent that Moore could not get any consistent rhythm going. If nothing else it proved UAR has plenty of ability. His next run should tell us a lot.
June 9, 2016 at 11:00 #1250487steeplechasing some fair points,i would just like to say,i do not believe he was running on empty or would have if racing in mid div(it was just what another poster pointed out)
June 9, 2016 at 14:51 #1250513Gingertipster – you flatter yourself if you think I’m in the least concerned that you or anyone else on here has a different opinion on anything whatsoever to me. This is a forum; one rather expects disagreement.
I never watched much of the post-race coverage; didn’t really care who won or care if jockeys rode great or poor races. Maybe an in-depth analysis was given and a conclusion praising or criticising Moore was made. Was there such an analysis? There ought to have been. FWIW I believe Harzand was the best horse in the race and would have won however USAR had been ridden. TV has the capacity to analyse races closely afterwards and ought to do so for G1s.What I would stress is that this was the poster’s 4th ever post on here. He or she is entitled to their opinion and those who disagree can make their arguments without using derogatory comments or spouting on in a tone that suggests they are god’s gift to race analysis and anyone who dares venture an alternative viewpoint is a dipstick. Parading one’s own cleverness and superiority is rather unbecoming.
This forum might be considered by some potential newcomers to be becoming rather “cliquey” and anyone who dares voice an opinion contrary to the regular posters will get slagged-off. This thread sadly, will do nothing to dispel that impression.I repeat, if TV DID an in-depth analysis of Moore’s rides and concluded he had nothing to be criticised for, then fair enough. The analysis needed to be done though. The original poster raised a topic that merited discussion, even if most concluded Moore did okay. LD73’s point that there seems to be a reluctance to (ahem!) even imply a top jockey may have been less than tip-top for fear of jeopardising future interviews with such jockeys is a good point. Sky’s TV Soccer pundits criticise players and officials without fear, maybe TV’s racing crew should adopt the same approach.
June 9, 2016 at 15:11 #1250517In the last couple of weeks alone we have had three first-time posters. The first asked about the GN runner Clear Profit, was helped in his enquiry but offered no response or thanks himself. The second asked for ‘any views on the draw’ at Thirsk and then responded thus following no immediate replies:
so nobody bets on the draw and no one has noticed the affect of the draw over the last few meetings at thirsk? racing people ? i don’t think so.
Finally, we have the initiator of this thread who actually had started to receive responses but nevertheless wrote:
One reply to this post, but many views, i thought this was a horse racing forum for debating.
I think it’s reasonable to say that this is hardly a way of creating a positive first impression.

I am not sure the point you are making. Are you suggesting because of the above that new posters are fair game for the sort of reply Apracing produced?
Everyone has the option to simply ignore a post.

June 9, 2016 at 19:18 #1250549Great thread and most entertaining
Just an adjunct to the subject matter: no mention seems to have been made that Harzand is an Aga Khan bred; they tend to be oh so genuine sorts and over middle distances don’t tend to want for stamina
You can argue until Gingertipster decides to take his bat home again that Moore was further out of his ground than he would have ideally liked – which I think was the case – but to my eyes Harzand would have outstayed US Army Ranger regardless; and furthermore he looks the type who relished being joined and thence cajoling himself in to more effort without much assistance from the jockey
You don’t need sectionals to tell you that: all you need to know is that the Aga Khan has bred some of the best, toughest and most genuine (that word again) thoroughbreds to have graced the Turf
Why do you all get so animated when a new correspondent submits a post that’s well meant but ‘with the crowd’ errant? During my punting life my main concern was when fellow punters agreed with me: horrid. If the crowd agree I have no edge, so let that bustle believe what they say, smile knowingly with them and then take the opposing view. ‘Putting them right’, as Insomniac writes, does smack of superiority. They will be right more often than you, all you have is the odds with you, long term
Drone has just returned from a glorious few days wandering the limestone fells in Ribblesdale, which are even more beautiful than the fillies who will contest the eponymous race next week. He fancies a punt in homage. Any tips from the crowd, in-crowd, or out-crowd welcome

Must have been because of complaints about Sectional Harrassment

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
