These are momentary highest spikes, so one artificial spike can be the temperature recorded
Wrong: as even the hysterical media yesterday were at pains to point out the temperature readings yesterday are ‘provisional’ This is because they are transmitted to Met Office HQ in Exeter hourly from automatic weather stations that are not manned
Over the next few days the stations will be manually checked, the raw data scrutinised and if necessary, adjustments made. It seems more than likely that professional Meteorologists are aware of the possible anomalies and spikes that can occur and will tweak accordingly
You can spot value in horse race betting; they can spot errors in weather station data
An awful lot of hot air emanating from down Somerset way: the temperature spikes at RAF Yeovilton weather station will have the Exeter boffins baffled

Oh – as Clive would say – “FFS”, that just proves my point, Drone.
Earlier you said “A decent enough sample size I reckon that doesn’t justify your claim that records from airfields are ‘outliers’
That’s it”.The temperatures we were given yesterday that people – including TRFers and yourself – have been stating are true, proper temperatures.
Where as the Mett Office agree with me that they need to be looked at further because there may be other reasons for some of these temperatures to be so high.
Value Is EverythingJuly 20, 2022 at 16:54 #1607892Slightly mild today here in Taunton so much so I got my mistress to burn my body with hot candle wax

July 20, 2022 at 17:00 #1607898Only mild here on the edge of the Mendips too.
Keeps threatening rain and have seen it in the distance at times today.Nope, no hot air here in Somerset Drone.
I hear there’s quite a bit up in Yorkshire though.

The Metoffice are going to abandon Kew Gardens after a century because they realise someone opens the door to the palm house every now and then
And they are going to dismiss hea throw readings because they’ve just found out there’s an airport there
July 20, 2022 at 17:44 #1607909The reasons you have given for the temperature readings being “too high” are barmy
Small single prop aircraft taking off and landing every few minutes (even) would give off virtually nothing. I know. I’ve flown them
The met office do know what they are doing and I think it’s a fair guess that they don’t place the equipment next to botanical gardens hot houses or right behind 747 aircraft taking off
But one thing here. Drone clearly knows his stuff on this and dare I say I have pretty good knowledge of aviation. Why not just accept that?
And the readings for bushy park and Hampton (by rivers and reservoirs) were also 40c yesterday
Rivers and expanses of water cool air
July 20, 2022 at 18:18 #1607917I’ve heard and read some cracking climate change denial material over the years, but suggesting the Met Office sites weather stations in disproportionately hot locations tops the lot.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 20, 2022 at 18:24 #1607920All weather data – day in day out – obtained remotely from automatic weather stations is ‘provisional’ until manually checked. Such is the importance of maintaining an accurate on-going data set of meteorological trends that, wisely, the Met Office don’t place total faith in their automatic equipment always functioning faultlessly
And that really is it. Enjoyable thread
July 20, 2022 at 20:08 #1607930I used to work near the Met Office (applied to work for them once actually but got nowhere). It’s almost directly under the flight path for Exeter Airport 😉
July 20, 2022 at 20:17 #1607936Is there anywhere that isn’t almost directly under a flight path?
