No shortage of either in this neck of the woods (reckon I fall into both categories) so careful out there – we don’t want to lose anyone!

Random: “God, the Sun’s hot today.”
Spike Milligan: “Don’t touch it, then.”

I did what’s been advised this morning and opened all windows at circa 7.30am to let the relatively cool air in, then shut them and sun-facing curtains at circa 10.30am

It’s risen to 29C outside but a reasonable 22C has so far been maintained inside

Here in this part of the westcountry it’s been cloudy all morning with occasional sun poking through, mid 20s outside at a guess.

This heatwave gets a one star review from me so far, I want my money back.

Here in Hampshire it’s 33 degrees, all windows open, light breeze, I’m crashed out on the sofa facing the open French window and it’s tolerably hot – thus far!

Scaremongerers have said that thousands will die in the heatwave.

When they don’t, will they admit they were wrong?

Oh look, some creatures that go “oink oink” have just appeared over the top of my house.

As CAS’s legal representative I need to point out that 1,999 deaths would not technically be “thousands” therefore he will still be rightly claiming the prediction as a win.

As CAS’s self-appointed PRO I need to point out that 1,999 deaths would not technically be “thousands” therefore he will still be rightly claiming his scepticism as a win.

Just been outside for the first time today.

It was quite hot. On the 18th July. In the summer.

Up to 34 degrees here, despite the Sun being currently behind cloud.

    It’s still bearable.

‘It was quite hot. On the 18th July. In the summer.’

A lovely summer’s day. In summer? Never!

I saw that ‘thousands of deaths’ prediction somewhere and did think it was a bit much. Apparently a red warning means a ‘risk of death, even to the healthy’. Come off it.

Notice how weather maps now no longer show hot weather with images of the sun, which we associate with happiness and good times. (I can remember when they used to be stuck onto the map by hand by friendly weathermen like Ian McCaskill and Michael Fish).

Now the weather maps are blocks of colour, with very hot weather shown in bright shades of red – a colour associated with danger and warnings.

To think that thousands of British people leave this country every year to visit southern Spain and North Africa precisely to experience these temperatures.

I am just about old enough to remember the summer of 1976. The sun shone for weeks on end, the grass was parched and the temperature soared. Eventually, Denis Howell was appointed Minister of Drought – and the heavens promptly opened.

The memorable summer was followed two years later by the Winter of Discontent. Why do I get the horrible feeling that history may be about to repeat itself?

It’s actually dropped to 32 degrees here and I’m fairly sure I’m not dead.

    They said could, not will.

Back up to 34 degrees chez Chezza.

A four pack of Valencia orange lollies from Waitrose has made the day more tolerable.
