And so the spin begins: Labour saying the Tories are toast; Conservatives arguing that Labour should have done better (and conveniently ignoring their own pathetic showing).
May 5, 2023 at 21:24 #1646630More spin than Shane Warne, do people seriously believe this embarrassing rubbish that they come out with?
Clearly a bloodbath for the Tories, Labour heading in the right direction but shouldn’t rest on their laurels. The Lib Dems will probably be the most pleased out of anyone.
What’s the feeling in the Green fraternity Gladders? Roughly double the number of seats and an outright win sounds like a good result to me. No doubt they’ve looked into it in more detail to see where the gains are.
May 5, 2023 at 22:17 #1646633The Greens are obviously delighted, Richard. Excellent progress made; let’s see how good a job they do in mid-Suffolk now.
May 6, 2023 at 07:19 #1646667Glad will be delighted to know the Green candidate won in my ward. The party already had the seat and held it comfortably enough by over 100 votes from Labour.
Looking at the results in Liverpool: in the Waterfront North ward, the total electorate is just 864 people. Only 193 voted. The Labour candidate won with just 91 votes.
I know the ward boundaries have only just been redrawn in Liverpool but this ward should be incorporated into another. I thought rotten boroughs were abolished in the 19th century.
May 6, 2023 at 09:44 #1646689My hopefully objective view is that this was even worse than most imagined for the Tories, Sunak’s ability to distance himself and his Party from the worst excesses of Johnson and Truss now looks in severe doubt and the Tory Party, while an election-winning machine historically, are as capable as anyone else of devolving into internal Civil War when the writing is on the wall, making things even worse.
Prediction: the Tories will NOT win most seats next general election and WILL be out of office.
And for a long time (maybe even forever) because I see a Rainbow Alliance – and the colossal pressure for electoral reform that would bring – getting a step closer.
Labour has gained seats, but not as many as many expected and the real relative momentum is with the Lib-Dems and Greens.
I’m a Labour voter, but I could comfortably live with a moderately centre-left government which is both liberally tolerant and environmentally aware.
Sunak will be privately horrified, but I doubt if Starmer is privately thrilled himself.
No Overall Majority still looks possible to me.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 6, 2023 at 09:52 #1646691I’ve voted Green on several occasions, both in Local and General elections so it’s good to see them make headway, but it’s noteworthy that in the two councils I’m aware of where they were already in office as coalitions – York and Brighton – they lost seats; in York all 3 and in Brighton 13 of 20
Which really just emphasises that pleasing the proletariat when holding power is a lot more difficult than doing so when seeking power: reality scuppers ideology
May 6, 2023 at 10:03 #1646697Going on the last time I visited Brighton, I am not in the slightest bit surprised about the Greens losing so many seats.

May 6, 2023 at 18:31 #1646880Likely a Lab/LD coalition after the GE. Most political pundits see Labour short by around 30 seats.
I voted by post, as currently away in Fuerteventura. My council, South Glos, went to NOC from Tories. Shame really, because they’ve been a decent council, esp when we compare it to ‘down the road’ with Bristol Shi##y council.
I suspect a lot of Tory voters stayed away, which is stupid really. I’m fully expecting my local MP to get ditched at next GE, and my constituency to turn Red.May 6, 2023 at 18:31 #1646881Loveable Brighton is a city which is perpetually helping the Police with their enquiries.

As far as local elections go, not many people are concerned about ideology or high minded ideals. But they do want their bins to be emptied and the streets kept clean.
May 6, 2023 at 18:38 #1646883Not sure Brighton is quite so loveable anymore. It always had a slightly seedy atmosphere – hence Keith Waterhouse’s memorable description. But it did have a certain raffish charm.
Now it just feels like a horrible part of London dumped on the Sussex coast.
May 6, 2023 at 18:44 #1646884I used to enjoy parking up at the Lanes underground car park, having lunch at Moshimo Japanese sushi bar or The Regency (had a lovely Lobster Thermidor there once) before having an ice cream on the Pier.
But most of my trips nowadays are straight up to the racecourse which remains beautiful to my eyes on a sunny summer day.
But there are seedy 21st century shades of “Brighton Rock,” namely the in-running drones, before each race suddenly rising like alien craft in “War Of The Worlds” from the tower blocks poking up above the cliffs.
I still like old Brighton, but probably because I’m an occasional visitor and don’t actually have to live there.

That isn’t unique to Brighton. But it would be nice if they set an example and cleaned their streets better than any other council does.
May 6, 2023 at 20:31 #1646904Thanks for the reply yesterday Gladders.
I hope we see more from outside the main two parties at the next GE, overall majorities are a bad thing in my book whether it’s Tory or Labour.
Ian’s 09.44 post is about right. The Tories are set for massive losses but Labour are far from home and hosed. As you touched upon, electoral reform is a must in my book, the Greens being a perfect example. Well north of 800k votes last time out and one MP. The SNP get 40 odd MPs for just 400k more than that
PR now, simple as that. The cynic in me says that the government had a hand in setting the coronation date for today knowing it was going to be a bloodbath but by the time Saturday’s print run came around it was all about Brian for the rest of the weekend.
