PR would lead to a fundamental change in British politics – governments would be weaker, more short-lived, the incidence of elections would increase.

But looking back on: 18 years of Tory rule, 13 years of Labour rule, and now 13 years and counting of Tory rule again, that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

At the age of 60, my only real conclusion about British politics is most people don’t want Socialism, but most people don’t want a laissez-faire right wing free-for-all either.

They want something in the middle – solid public services in terms of health and education, but the freedom to be able to progress a career or business and prosper without having all gains taxed away.

And broadly speaking people are more environmentally aware and more tolerant of those of differing race, religion or orientation than was once the case.

A Labour government heavily influenced by Green values wouldn’t be the worst thing, and a liberal influence wouldn’t come amiss either.

An end to extremes – a bit like a hob nob that hasn’t been over dunked but hasn’t been allowed to dry right out either.

Fair comment ending with a superb biscuit analogy, it doesn’t get much more Ian Davies than that!

Exactly this. Yet despite clearly haemorrhaging votes to those to the left of them (for which read just about everyone, it is not unfair to describe this as the most right wing Tory party in decades), the solution put forward by some of them is to go even further right! They have truly lost the plot.

As Cork has rightly said, we need to stop listening to the loud, professionally offended minority which exists at both ends of the spectrum. The middle ground is called that for a reason, it’s where most of us are.

Not sure the world is Ready for Rishi. But going by the social media frenzy yesterday, you could have been forgiven for thinking it was Ready for Penny.

I suppose Liz Truss did not realise what she had done when she made Mordaunt the Leader of the House and (more significantly) Lord President of the Privy Council. I doubt Mordaunt appreciated the implications of the latter role either.

Yet within days of her appointment, she was presiding over the Accession Council of Charles III with a far more prominent role than the hapless Truss. And, after being kept in post by Sunak despite standing against him for the leadership, she had the most significant role of any politician in the Coronation, frequently appearing in the pictures seen by a global audience of hundreds of millions.

Politicians are a competitive lot and I expect some of them were very jealous.

It’s all in the eye of the beholder – and one man’s hob nob might be another man’s custard cream – but Penny Mordaunt is a visually-magnificent woman by the standards of many men (possibly especially those of a certain age and disposition) and the fact she has never knowingly been seen to smile evidently adds to her obvious physical allure for many.

I didn’t even watch the Coronation yesterday, but the fact her name was plastered all over social media all day long didn’t escape even my reclusive attention.

I didn’t watch it, have read little about it and spend almost no time on social media but as far as I can tell, Mordaunt performed a well rehearsed and strictly designed ceremonial role very well. Now she’s a PM in waiting according to some? That’s quite a stretch.

It’s not like the Tories to stretch the realms of credibility. Not at all.

I am not sure many people were thinking about her in terms of being a potential Prime Minister.

Women seemed impressed how she was able to hold a heavy sword aloft while wearing high heels and not swaying once.

While (without wanting to sound too crude about it) a lot of men were clearly captivated by the sight of her holding an erect sword in her hands for about two hours, whilst clad in an outfit that drew attention to her undoubted attributes.

Even the usually reserved Peter Hitchens seemed somewhat smitten:

“Like many who watched, I was fascinated by the majestic central role played by the Lord President of the Council, Penny Mordaunt, looking like one of the fiercer and more demanding Roman goddesses as she bore her sword.”

Mordant is lucky in that she is an extremely large lady but has the face and bone structure of a slim one: bit like Dawn French. Unlike Coffey who is an extremely large lady with a face that looks like an over dunked Hob Nob. I really don’t understand how Truss had the gall to turn up wearing bright orange. After what she did to the country you’d think she’d try to disappear into the shadows ( a friend of ours, an estate agent, told us that clients of his are still suffering from the after effects of her short but disastrous reign). I don’t think the government are trying to go further right economically: they’re just trying to tap into the racist xenophobic part of the electorate that brought Farage to prominence.

“an extremely large lady with a face that looks like an over dunked Hob Nob.”

I’m fairly confident that, here in 2023, a remark like that from me on social media would see me roundly condemned as some sort of mysogynist.

But here in the Lounge, it’s perfectly permissible for Moehat to say it.

More than permissible, in fact – brilliantly hilarious!

    Literally can’t stop laughing.

As childish a PMQs as I’ve ever seen – unimpressed with both of them tbh.

Increasingly looking like they know the game is up. Sunak showing very little in the way of leadership or control and the rest of them starting to fight like rats* in a sack. They know they can’t really get rid of him though as surely it’s election time if they do.

Speaking of rats*, many of them are about to abandon the sinking ship. Ten percent of what is quite a large parliamentary party have so far announced that they will stand down (in English that’s jumping before they are pushed).

As ever none of it is their fault of course, it’s all because of the woke, leftist, Civil Service, BBC, Labour, Remoaner blob. Certainly nothing to do with those who’ve been in power for 13 years

The Tory-supporting media tantrum is already well underway and it’s going to be really spectacular when it does finally come crashing down. Get the popcorn ready folks.

*With apologies to rats, they can actually be lovely animals.

Rishi is in today’s Telegraph, blaming immigrants for our creaking public services.

Nothing to do with privatisation and the thirteen years of chronic underinvestment from government as well, then.

Always, always, always somebody else’s fault.

Of course even if we accept his desperate immigrant bashing as the true cause then who was in charge of immigration for the last 13 years?

Not a lot will change with Sir Buzz Lightyear in power.
He gave plenty of hints of ‘it’s not about money’, in his speech yday on the NHS. It’ll be more about reform. About time too if his govt go through with it.
Reform will be the main thrust of a SKS Labour government.
Their Green policies are already watered down because there aint no money.
Maybe they’ll get lucky that decent growth returns 2024 and govt revenues vastly improve.
Personally, i’m not expecting much from a SKS govt, other than a few ‘micro’ improvements. The Big Stuff might happen in its second term, incl a Return to Europe.

I think headline measures might be things that don’t cost much money.

Tightening up the Hunting laws would be an easy cheap “win” that would even silence the left of the party temporarily and feed off urban public opinion.

I actually read for the future of Point-to-Point if trail hunting is banned, but I can see why Starmer would regard it as a Woke/urban/populist measure that wouldn’t break the bank.

But overall I agree the main thing Starmer, like Blair, will do is halt the march to the Right.

There will be little in the way of winding back the clock, not least because the public won’t vote for anything like that and it’s likely to be a Labour Party manifesto that doesn’t over promise, same as Blair’s in 1997.
