Starmer being jeered yesterday in Southport …what do people expect him to do in 3 weeks ? , it’s sad to say but this isn’t Dunblane , you can stop people getting guns with controls in ….you can’t with knives , as for the idiots coming into Southport last night to riot while a vigil was on , find them , arrest them , jail them , absolute scum of the earth

Took a leaf out of Mike’s book and cashed out on Tugendhat for no loss. I cannot see him getting the job now.

All the momentum looks like it is with Jenrick.

And that’s the severe right hole the Tories can’t afford to fall into , in the quest to out right Farage they make themselves unelectable , it’s amazing how often an outgoing government does this prolonging the time out of office

I see the first round of the Conservative leadership voting went by with barely a murmur.

Priti Vacant came bottom, so it’s BFH for her. The next round is next Tuesday.

Michael Gove has been appointed editor of “The Spectator”. Another reason to not read it.

I knew it had just been bought, so I suppose the new owner wanted his own man in place.

At least Gove does have journalistic experience, unlike George Osborne when he was made editor of the “Evening Standard”.

“Taken 9/2 against Tom Tugendhat and 9/1 against James Cleverley to be the next leader of the Conservative Party.”

“Took a leaf out of Mike’s book and cashed out on Tugendhat for no loss. I cannot see him getting the job now.”

Tugendhat out to a top priced 70/1, so it looks like I did the right thing.

Cleverly now favourite, top priced 6/5 and odds on with one or two firms.

Come on, Conservative Party members. Do the right thing!

I just hope the Chagos Islands episode, in which Cleverly is implicated, does not hurt him. I may lay back the stake, just to ensure no loss.

    The vote amongst Conservative MPs:

    Cleverly: 39
    Jenrick: 31
    Badenoch: 30
    Tugendhat: 20

Tugendhat officially eliminated from the contest, with one more to be eliminated after another vote tomorrow.

I wouldn’t worry about the Chagos Islands thing. We only heard about it because the right wing media needed something to beat Starmer with. Most of those frothing at the mouth about it hadn’t even heard of them last week and I doubt more than a handful could point anywhere near them on a map. They’ll have moved on to whatever else they’ve been told to be outraged about this week.

Jenrick’s disgraceful comments about British forces supposedly killing rather than capturing terrorists were far worse. By all accounts the conference didn’t go well for him.

From those numbers it would take quite some swing to keep him out of the final two at least but who knows what happens then. He’s the least worst option left and has the most public appeal of the three (a very low bar indeed) but the membership probably aren’t interested in that.

Assuming he makes the final two, I assume Cleverly would rather face Jenrick. Badenoch might appeal more to the membership.

I have hedged enough back to ensure a small profit even if Cleverly loses but retaining a nice win if he does prevail, so all is good.

Yes I’d agree with that, it appears to be a case of Cleverly against whoever inherits more votes from Tugendhat. I suspect there is a significant number who don’t want Badenoch’s name anywhere near the membership.

At least your bets have livened up an otherwise incredibly dull contest between a number of mediocre participants.

Interestingly enough the Chagos Islands were mentioned in a question on University challenge last night which must have been recorded quite a while ago. I need to rewatch it but I’m sure they said something about the previous government planning to do what Labour have just done.

    Jenrick v Badenoch.

It would be funny if it weren’t so tragic.

Not so Clever by the Tories, going with two right wingers.

    Labour must be celebrating.
