Yes I presume it’s because Kew Gardens/Heathrow are in bowls
and heat is trapped within these “bowls”. I think the reason why Emley Moor was the hottest in temp last night was due to the heat rising. Emley Moor is about 800 feet above sea level.July 19, 2022 at 16:02 #160775037 then 36 back to 37 here.
I thought all these Met Office readings were taken in the shade and the location and proximity to anything was unimportant.
If Heathrow was misleading, they wouldn’t take readings from there.

Errr no.
Homer. Noooo. Heathrow is On a higher plain to surrounding area (you can see them touch down from sandown park) and Kew is bang next to the Thames so if it was a bowl it would be a bloody lake

Bull….
It tells half truths because then they can exaggerate global warming.
Value Is EverythingJuly 19, 2022 at 16:13 #1607753Ok. Ging
Hampton (where I was bought up) also often records highest temp of the day. Pretty sure it had highest of year for uk recently
It’s only 5 miles from Heathrow
But directly south
Would take a north wind etc and let’s leave it at that
July 19, 2022 at 16:13 #1607754Google says Kew Gardens 10m and Heathrow 25m above sea level.
July 19, 2022 at 16:17 #1607755Calm down Clive, too hot to go OTT.
As Chezza points out…
Areas immediately behind the runway are probably not counted because it would be too obvious the airport runway is a contributing factor to their hotter temperatures.Value Is EverythingJuly 19, 2022 at 16:20 #1607756I know.
Heathrow is actually a vast area too
July 19, 2022 at 16:23 #1607757Wasn’t the previous record at some botanical gardens in Cambridge?
That sounds like a recipe for heat too, but I honestly don’t think the location matters as all readings are taken in uniform settings in the shade.
Anyway, who needs to exaggerate climate change when there are fires breaking out in multiple locations?

Two weeks ago I met an old family friend fir first time in 20 years and recounted a freind of mine who went swimming in Thames at Hampton and drowned
He was 14
Yesterday
Virtually same spot
July 19, 2022 at 16:25 #1607759Fires are due to human stupidity/ignorance not climate change
July 19, 2022 at 16:29 #1607760These readings aren’t from thermometers stuck willy-nilly here and there; they’re from official Met Office weather stations
Airports feature heavily, for obvious reasons, as do scientific institutions such as botanical gardens
Temperature readings are taken from within specially designed boxes called Stevenson Screens, see the first section of:
July 19, 2022 at 16:31 #1607761Thanks Drone – thought it was something like that.
Re the fires, quite a bit of human stupidity and ignorance all across Europe coinciding with this heatwave.

It must be hell as they search for the body, knowing there is not a chance of survival but hoping they managed to escape elsewhere.
Unfortunately this has been happening to years. One of my Dad’s friends died swimming in the local dam over 60 years ago.

Correct ID, disposable bbqs, litter, deliberate setting of fires etc. Fires just don’t start on their own. We all did it as a kid under controlled conditions. Sun through glass on to paper.
July 19, 2022 at 16:52 #1607764Sun gone in, briefly very humid, still is but wind building, the weather could be about to break….

Cambridge also has an airport.
