Yeah, he bottled it again, one to avoid for sure.
Had a couple of quid on Bainne, and when he came out the pack, I knew with Katyiman in front, I had the winner.
Sorry, I have only just read that you had the winner. Well done, it must have made up four lengths on the dodgepot.
You commented on my Cesarawitch post. Unfortunately, I was probably right about Nakeeta as well. I think he hit 4th about three furlongs out before seemingly running into a wall. Big difference between running the trip at Chester rather than Newmarket.
I have managed to turn things around a little over the last three days.
Nice to have the jumps back. That old rogue (pretty sure I put him up on the Punchestown thread) Ordinary World put in a pretty spectacular round yesterday. It will be interesting to see if he can reproduce similar when he is put under pressure.
October 10, 2016 at 10:56 #1266501Yeah, well happy with Bainne, was a nice feeling seeing him making a challenge, knowing that the leader would easily capitulate, after wasting a few quid on Katyimann last time, was good to some of it back off him, albeit inadvertantly.
No luck with Nakeeta, I’ve watched the race a couple of times, and he was given every chance. I think your comment on the difference between the demands of Chester and Newmarket is spot on.
Good to hear you’ve turned things around, waiting for the end of a rut, can seem like forever. Despite a few quid back yesterday on Bainne, Your Busy, and Cradle Mountain, overall, off the back of Grumeti, and an overall dismal Saturday, it was a poor weekend, and I’ll be betting pennies for the next few weeks. Last October was a bloodbath for me, and I don’t want a repeat.
That Munster National continues to be a poor race for me, with Double Seven being my only winner it as far as I can recall. He wasn’t that big a loser Dare to Endeavour, but nonetheless a very frustrating result for me. Without trying to sound too much like a d1ck, I like to think I can second guess these things from time to time, but I seriously dropped the ball with Tiger Roll. I mentioned that I thought he’d be one of their Aintree horses this year. In order for that to happen, a win yesterday would have sealed the deal, should that indeed be their target. I didn’t put 2 and 2 together though, and I really should have twigged. That was a 33-1 winner that got away
Still, it was a bit of a “wow” performance from him. Blew me away, and I think he’s going places.Aaah, it was yourself that put up Ordinary World during the Punchestown chats. When I put him up yesterday, I knew that someone had gave him a shout last year, but I couldn’t remember who. I thought he looked outstanding yesterday, and that leap at the last put the seal on it. I’d be disappointed if he can’t build on that.
October 11, 2016 at 14:07 #1266694stilvi, I see Withernsea holds an entry in The Balmoral Handicap. I meant to say to you before, I caught a feature on ATR the other week, and they were discussing the distinct advantage that Colour Blue had that day, they reckon as he came that wide, he had much better ground to run on, which would have helped him no end (that was roughly the jist of it). If that’s the case, then an even better run from Withernsea, and if he made the cut on Saturday, he’d interest me.
As it is, I’ve went for your unlucky horse from The Cambridgeshire, GM Hopkins 16’s, and also Chil The Kite 33’s.

That winner absolutely bolted up which was strange as she looked pretty exposed. She has since finished fifth in a listed race on ground that was probably softer than ideal.
I haven’t had a proper chance to look at the Balmoral yet but I fear this might prove to be the inter-forum decider. Just have a feeling that the Cambridgeshire was ideal for GM Hopkins and this test might not suit him quite as well. Good luck with all of yours.
Changing tack if there is one handicapper I am looking forward to this season it is Dan Skelton’s Bekkensfirth. I put him up for the novices handicap at the Festival but we never saw him again after Kempton. Do you know if his problem was ever reported? I have checked and he is in this year’s team.
October 14, 2016 at 00:30 #1266941Cheers, fingers crossed for the pair of them, but as far as Withernsea is concerned, all academic, as he didn’t get in.
Bekkensfirth, there’s a horse I’d forgotten about. I’m afraid none the wiser as to his wellbeing, but definitely good news if he’s in the team. I had to go back and watch that Kempton run again after you mentioned him, and that was a win that got away. He’s a good shout for this year definitely, and if they could get a win into him (next week at Cheltenham???) he could even be worth considering for The BetVictor Gold Cup. He looks very well handicapped, too handicapped to get into it without another win under his belt.
Don’t know if you seen it yourself, I was browsing the ATR Jumps mini-site tonight, and in his Stable Tour, Elliot mentioned The Becher Chase as a possible target for Empire of Dirt.

Keeping my fingers crossed that doesn’t happen. It’s amazing how people can see things so differently.
The last thing I would be thinking would be running him over 3m+. The Cheltenham win was a big leap forward. He showed bags of pace on good ground. The first thing I would want to do would be to confirm that at least part of the improvement was due to the hold-up tactics. Consequently, given goodish ground I would want him primed for one of the big 2m4f Cheltenham handicaps. I don’t think he really wants winter ground so it would then be a quiet time awaiting a spring campaign when I would be very hopeful of him picking up at least one of those 5/6 runner Grade 3 contests. He might well be able to exceed those expectations.
Aintree would seem a very poor option for potentially a hold-up horse who has previously had jumping issues. That sort of task might actually wreck his career.
October 14, 2016 at 13:26 #1266974The only saving grace might be the sheer number of options they have for races like The Becher. As much as I mentioned him for Aintree in The National thread, I would still agree that remaining under 3 miles would seem to make more sense. Wouldn’t put it past them to run him over 3 miles plus a few times to get his mark back down for The Spring.
October 15, 2016 at 15:50 #1267323stilvi – Skelton Stable Tour up on ATR, but unfortunately no mention of Bekkensfirth.

I don’t know if that is good or bad news. If they are plotting a handicap gamble perhaps they wouldn’t want to highlight the fact? The Racing Post did a Q & A with Skelton and I didn’t get an answer to my question about said horse.
That race at Down Royal isn’t it the early season race for Gold Cup horses? Seem to remember one of my favourites, Looks Like Trouble running away with one of the early runnings, possibly the first?
I enjoyed today’s competition even though Moore contrived to ride one of the poorest races of the season (which I did flag up beforehand) and Firmament was one of about a dozen hard luck stories in the last. It’s a bit of fun and it doesn’t really matter who wins. I did ask the question about a jumps one but nobody replied. I would have thought that the Gold Cup card provides a little bit of something for everyone. Any chance?
October 16, 2016 at 10:34 #1267444Hopefully he didn’t get a mention on the stable tour, as he isn’t one of the stables big names (yet). He certainly looks a blot on the handicap, so I’d be watching the entries for Cheltenham next week with interest.
Yeah, a lot of good horses have won The JNWine in recent times, including, as you say, Looks Like Trouble, along with the likes of Kauto Star, Road To Riches, and Don Cossack, so very definitely one for Gold Cup types. There’s the usual raft of Giggs entries, so a waiting game for you I reckon, to see if this is the route they’re taking.
I moan a lot more about the jockeys on the flat, than I do on the jumps, there just seems to be more bad rides in that sphere, but I could be wrong. Was a poor day for me yesterday. I promised myself to only bet a few pennies for the rest of the month, and I was glad of this yesterday, as this October has continued very much like last October. I only bet 3 horses yesterday, Litigant, See Haar (Cork), and Mitchum Swagger, and along with AP plays on Brando, GM Hopkins, and Chil The Kite, only Brando gave me any kind of a return. I got Brando at 20’s, but it was such a small return off of him, that it didn’t make any difference. The rest were poor, and equally as worrying for me, is that 4 or 5 others I considered yesterday also ran really badly, so time to sit back and take it easy I reckon. Having said that, I’m tempted by Gwafa & Court Minstrel today in the big hurdle at Kempton. They look decent prices against the JP pair, and worth a small (smaller than usual) interest, and maybe a small reverse exacta.
Enjoyed watching the competition, rather than taking part, but I’ll make sure Nathan and DG consider a Cheltenham one. As someone who runs a couple of competitions on here, I sometimes worry that we’re at saturation point with them on TRF, but yesterday was a huge success, and great effort from DG, and Nath, not to mention the TRF’ers. If we do have a Cheltenham one, I’ll be sure to be involved.

You are not wrong! I even explained to Ryan how he should ride the horse and he still contrived to make a pig’s ear of it!
I looked at Gwafa but being very cautious at the moment have left him alone. That said I wouldn’t be surprised if he split the market leaders. Yesterday, I managed the two winners (Journey & Garde La Victoire) and the two unlucky places (Firmament & Third Time Lucky) in the last. Pretty Perfect just failed to place and Crafted Jewel was scuppered by the Cork weather. Can’t grumble with some return from 4/6 so it is still an upward curve and it would be nice if it lasted a few more days.
October 16, 2016 at 16:58 #1267506Unlucky with Court Minstrel. When things are going well the nod can go your way. It was a strange race as I thought Mister Miyagi travelled much the best but didn’t feature in the finish. Gwafa didn’t jump with any fluency and was disappointing. A worrying start for Paul Webber who needs a good season more than most.
October 16, 2016 at 23:26 #1267539Thanks, you’d have thought I had a ton on him the way I was cheering him on lol. It was only a small bet, made even smaller by the hefty R4, but I got him at 25’s, so really good to break my rut, which had definitely set in the last week. Slightly annoyed at the (predictable) withdrawal of MTOY, as I thought he would have struggled, but shouldn’t complain, and good to get another “return” from Court Minstrel who’s given me a couple of good days in the past.
Yeah, Miyagi was very poor in the end, and for a trainer who needs some star names, it certainly hasn’t started too well.
