Thanks, I did my best to talk myself out of it. I don’t often get ground ‘wrong’ but you could see very early on he was well positioned and moving very well. To be fair to Flanagan he gave him the perfect ride.
I used to be pretty negative about handicaps but these days as a small punter it is very difficult to turn a profit just betting on condition races. Perhaps the more positive thoughts are working as that’s my second winner in a row in that race and it’s two out of the last three in Brain Power’s race. Those are probably the two most competitive two mile handicaps of the season.
It was fractions with Stellar Notion. I don’t think he jumped quite as well as he can and although I am not sure if it made any difference something happened with the reins on the run in.
January 23, 2017 at 12:38 #1283412stilvi; I asked on another thread about Ice Cold Soul, not realising you’d backed him. I was wondering why he’d been off the track for 12 months at one point; whether it was injury or if connections had wanted to protect his handicap mark [he had won well at the track]. He met a lot of stats for the race other than the going but was one of the few horses drifting out prior to the race and Noel Meade has an appalling record in it. I covered my multiple bets in the race by backing that lady trainers horse at a huge price [he went from 80/1 to 25/1 before the off. I can’t seem to get the info from TRP that I used to get, not being a member.
January 23, 2017 at 13:28 #1283419Yes, Liz Doyle, she was quite hopeful when interviewed on ATR.
As regards tipping – as long as VTC doesn’t mind – I much prefer having a little ‘chat’ on here. It is a nice little haven from all the ego’s and the I’m right, you’re wrong stuff that can get quite very draining after a while.
I don’t know the reason why Ice Cold Soul was off but it wouldn’t have been deliberate. Not sure if there are any more after Mayo Star (mentioned him after his bumper debut) but the family is certainly on a high with this win following Outlander’s Grade 1 success.
January 23, 2017 at 14:28 #1283423Not at all Stilvi, the more chat the better as far as I’m concerned.
January 23, 2017 at 15:05 #1283432I didn’t know anything about Liz Doyle; I’m imagining she’s a batty old woman like me [may just be the Father Ted image though]. Thankfully I backed her horse at 80/1 which covered my many bets [aftertiming allowed on here]; probably after reading that she’d trained a shock 50/1 winner of the race. I followed lady trainers for most of last season but there are so many now I might have to start following male ones. I do love these big handicaps. Ice Cold Soul was actually third in my rating for the race [first race I’ve rated in a long time].
January 23, 2017 at 16:07 #1283442Liz Doyle is probably late thirties/early forties – apologies if I have got that wrong! Don’t know about batty but she certainly appeared to get pretty excited cheering on yesterday’s winner.

I think she is most well known as the original trainer of Al Ferof and Cheltenian but has enjoyed success herself with the likes of Le Vent D’Antan and Kauto Grand Mogol.
January 23, 2017 at 16:56 #1283451You’re allowed to on here definitely moe lol.
In all the excitement of stilvi’s Ice Cold Soul, and my “agitation” at Stellar Notion, not to mention being half sleeping as I came in from work, I forgot to do an aftertime of my own. My old “pal” Jett, did the business for me at 66’s ew yesterday, first proper favour he’s done me, and he’s back on the radar again. One for the spring festivals definitely.
January 23, 2017 at 18:59 #1283477Well, I missed a 20/1 winner today; tipped upon W Hill radio just as the race was starting; would usually put a bet on at that price but, darn it, was in the bath and had to listen in horror as it ran out an easy winner. To add insult to injury had a bath as we were going to the cinema tonight but decided I was too tired to go anyway [old age]. Nearly fell asleep during Star Wars the other week so the Jackie film was never going to keep me awake. Although, the alternative film to see, La La Land was probably more appropriate given the erratic nature of my betting these days. Going to console myself with watching Vikings series 3 instead [if I can stay awake]. We were going to Leicester tomorrow for the all mares racing but it’s too bloomin’ cold…thanks for info in Mrs Doyle stilvi. Seems like she can spot a good horse. [also didn’t back Adam’s winner today as the price was a bit short for me…]
January 24, 2017 at 23:24 #1283677Another disappointing finishing effort from Global Stage today.
Just listened to this. Segal jumping on the bandwagon around 21 minutes.
January 25, 2017 at 00:45 #1283685Too many ???’s against Global Stage for me at the moment, not the hottest race by any imagination, and would have expected closer.
Thanks for that link. Yup, finally on the bandwagon, and a bit late, but at least someone giving him credit now(you’d have been happy to hear The Ryanair mentioned), but the 2 “experts” had nothing to come back with, and didn’t acknowledge anything he said.
January 25, 2017 at 11:28 #1283709Hoping that Millie Naseeb can win at Lingfield for me today. Too many stupid mug punter bets recently so am having a break but can’t ignore Millie…..darn it. NR….

I agree not the most dynamic but a lot better than nothing. I have a feeling if he hadn’t put him up for the Ryanair he would probably have put him up for the Gold Cup. Obviously, there is now a huge amount resting on the Irish Gold Cup. Do you know if Cooper will be back? Crazy if he chose to ride Don Poli.
Didn’t agree with everything Segal said by any means. Pleased to see he tried to correct himself over the idea that Djakadam is ‘progressive’. Clearly he isn’t anything of the sort. Not sure why he would think the Peter Marsh was a better race than the Hennessy and Welsh Grand National? They might not have been the best renewals but they were far more competitive than the Peter Marsh. I flagged up on another thread that the Betfair was obvious race for Bristol De Mai. At the moment I don’t think he is anything like a genuine 160 horse outside of Haydock.
Very disappointing news about Ar Mad although probably not that surprising given the nonsense the trainer has been spouting in the last few days. Leaving aside betting a real shame because at least Ar Mad v Douvan would have generated some excitement.
January 25, 2017 at 15:03 #1283744Just noticed that Mall Dini is entered over two miles tomorrow. Answers on a postcard.
Very disappointing nothing is taking on Getabird.
January 25, 2017 at 17:32 #1283767Don’t know what to make of that Mall Dini entry to be honest. Probably not good news for you, but I’m becoming increasingly sure that he’ll take in The Ultima Handicap on Day 1. I hope for the sake of that 33’s you have that I’m wrong. I’ll definitely be joining you though, wherever he lines up.
As for the Getabird race, very disappointing set of entries, and won’t really tell us anything.
I thought the last I heard was that Cooper would miss The Leapordstown race, but not 100%. I’d be amazed if he chose Don Poli over Empire, and surely whoever get the choice would take the latter.
Yeah, same here, it’s safe to say I don’t hang on every word from Segal, and I know some do (not on here to be fair), but he did redeem himself a couple of times, and I do like to listen him. The other 2 guys though, dear oh dear, they just didn’t have anything particularly insightful to offer at all. Yeah, clearly nonsense about The Peter Marsh though. To say that race was stronger than The Hennessy or The Welsh National was just wrong, plain and simple, and a bit disappointing to hear a comment like that. I seen your comment about The Betfair, and I’d agree, it seems the logical choice for him next year, and if there were a market formed for it now, he’d surely be very short. Still impressed with him on Saturday though, and I’d like to have covered him for Cheltenham, as I couldn’t confidently write him off.
I tend not to go on “Horse Racing” too much, but I’m aware of the thread. Yes, horses can go better LH or RH, and some prefer flatter tracks, some prefer sharper tracks, but I’m quite sure that Ar Mad wouldn’t be that disadvantaged round Cheltenham, that they can’t let him take his chance
January 26, 2017 at 18:04 #1283897I think they have just lost the plot with Mall Dini. Last year he was beautifully prepared but this year has been the exact opposite. Almost bordering on the clueless. At the moment he isn’t finishing his races off at any trip.
He is one of an increasing list of sickeners on the ante-post front joining Our Duke, Coneygree and Robin Roe. No doubt Ar Mad will soon be added to the list. Ante-post is what it is but if you are going to lose you would sooner do so in the knowledge that the horses you have put up subsequently show they just weren’t good enough. With the possible exception of Mall Dini not sure that is the case with this lot.
Now the entries are coming out need to try to fill in some of the blanks. I am quite happy with the Supreme so far as I haven’t lost any money, yet! It remains very difficult. I know I suggested Nambour for the National Hunt Chase but I didn’t persuade myself to back him.
Not all doom and gloom as I got a return from all three bets today, the 1-3 in the concluding bumper and Snow Falcon. Not sure whether I was lucky or unlucky with Snow Falcon as he is a terrible jumper.
Easy win for Champagne West but I would be fearful of his jumping holding up at the Festival. Muddling race or not, it looked as if Getabird lacked a gear change and it is hard to believe Stan James have cut the price. Had he been a 25/1 chance I am pretty sure that they would all have shunted him out.
Hoping Happy Diva will continue her improvement tomorrow. Possibly, not the ideal track but I would be surprised and disappointed if she can only beat one as the betting suggests. Fingers crossed that the meeting goes ahead.
January 27, 2017 at 07:03 #1283957Yeah, I’m not quite sure what’s going on with Mall Dini at all, and you could only be holding out hope that they have a long term plan, as much as it certainly doesn’t look that way at all.
I don’t know what to say about the Our Duke situation. Those who have bet him are perfectly entitled to be hacked off. Anybody who says that Harrington/Our Duke owners are not obliged to make decisions based on punters are correct, but this is also to completely and utterly miss the point. There are 2 types of people in the world. The first type are the connections of Our Duke, who know that he isn’t going to The RSA, but keep punters informed, the second type are are the connections of Our Duke, who know that he isn’t going to The RSA, but don’t keep punters informed. The second type of people, I don’t want to know. To not inform punters that he isn’t going RSA, can only be described as act of total ignorance, and it’s disgraceful.
I’m still keen on Nambour myself, but have went with Tiger Roll, while as for The Supreme, I really don’t have a clue, but if having a proper bet, I would go for Consul De Thaix.
Well done on your returns yesterday, and any money returned from a round like Snow Falcons, is money well earned.
Really really happy with Champagne West yesterday, but he still clouted one, and I hope De Bromhead keeps the schooling up, because as you point out, Cheltenham is a different ball game. What I will say though is that that was a hugely impressive performance yesterday, and he won very convincingly. I’m very hopeful he goes Gold Cup now.
Got a couple of system horses at the track today, so I hope you get a chance with Happy Diva. Apart from that, nothing catches the eye today.
January 27, 2017 at 10:04 #1283962Fortunately, we live in a time where there is a lot more information given out but it appears there are some trainers who still wish to embrace the dark ages. It is almost as if it doesn’t matter because it is only punters who have got screwed. Harrington has been interviewed lots of times but has deliberately chosen to say nothing. I can’t believe the doubt about running has just happened overnight. It wouldn’t have helped me because I backed him pretty much straight after his last race but what about punters who have backed in the last few days and what about anyone who might have laid him in the knowledge they couldn’t lose? That isn’t going to be monitored. As I said I think this is worse than Willie Mullins because I don’t believe he deliberately sets out to mislead punters, it is just the way he operates.
Sad news about Huntingdon. I didn’t think the double figures prices would last.
