Much better ITV coverage compared to years previous. Far more focus on the horses. Also they’re talking a lot about how they’re ridden. Ruby Walsh is putting on a show, even AP is better. There’s also much less “social stable” stuff. Maybe two-ish segments rather than between every race. They still have Gleeson being a gobshite in the betting ring, with more idiot gobshites shouting behind him, but the time there seems to have been shortened. They’ve even got one of the social stable lads doing behind the scenes stuff, except it’s not about English made sparkling wine this time. The social stable fella had an interview with the Saffa head steward and talked about how the stewards are setup for the day, and they had an interview with the Clerk of the Course about how she keeps all the pieces moving, especially the doctors, vets, and equine and regular ambulances.
I’m pretty impressed. I’d suggest taking it off mute at opportune moments but there’ll always be problems.
I feel they might have realised that trying to win people over with “glam” and “showbiz” doesn’t convert anyone to a longer term viewer when the less prestigious and “non-event” racing is on without the glam.
They did have that prick Jack Whitehall on one of the social stable things. Guy hadn’t a clue about the horses he was mentioning or horse racing and everything was obviously pre-written for him. Which is no surprise considering he’s a “boy band” comedian. Producers (his dad in showbiz) tailoring him to the audience and his jokes coming out of writers. A complete prat.

March 16, 2023 at 12:01 #1639798Niall Hannity has just catapulted himself to the top of my racing presenter rankings.
The utter contempt for the fashion bit on RTV just now was glorious.
March 16, 2023 at 13:03 #1639818Jesus. ITV opened with the presenters singing. They were doing so well.
March 16, 2023 at 13:29 #1639830A bit of an understatement to add on the subject of Dinoblue that ” Thyne Hill also made a mistake” – it was cruising when falling, something they did not want to show. They also did not show Mahler Mission going the other day. They were both crucial parts of these races – why show the sport if they blot bits out. Who are they kidding?
March 16, 2023 at 15:04 #1639894Fair dues to Alice, she didn’t just rave on about how amazing every horse looks in the paddock, she said Shishkin didn’t look great.

I was in agreement with what Fiftyp said above, but should have known better. Mark and Charlotte make an unwelcome return today.

March 17, 2023 at 16:32 #1640270They did well enough this week in general I thought. Not too much nauseating “what a story it would be” and they managed to hit the right note when Henry de Bromhead’s horses won whoch they could’ve got wrong. So well done ITV
March 17, 2023 at 17:25 #1640292I’ve been a bit of a defender on here, for ITV racing coverage, over the last year, because it suits me.
This week they’ve been just great. Struck the right balance imho
March 17, 2023 at 19:24 #1640340Although it’s always open to criticism……….you folks really don’t appreciate what you have got.
Compared to the crap we get here, this coverage is pure gold.
I think many of you are too complacent regarding your racing scene and how embracing it is, and not just the big meetings.
The TV coverage is almost always the standard fair of sectional times and speed. You don’t get any ‘Alice’s’ showing any emotion and give a big hug to an owner or trainer.
We have no appreciation for anything but the winner and even then, unless it’s one of the few showcase races, the winner is brought into somewhere by the track, (only the winner), quick photo taken with the owners, then out again and on with the next race. You folks have it so good and don’t realize it.

Griff – where is “here”?

March 17, 2023 at 19:55 #1640358March 19, 2023 at 08:14 #1640577I’m not mad on how ITV feel it’s appropriate to intrude on private grief whenever they feel like it by referencing bereavements in connection with particular connections if and when they have a winner .They did it with the Tizzards recently and they overdid it with the De Bromheads this week. I think it’s poor taste to use that angle in order to heighten the significance of a horse race …even at the Festival. If the family choose to reference their loved ones then that is their perfect right but making it the first thing you say to the winning jockey ( like Chapman did) strikes me as poor taste .Ed Chamberlain was hovering around that aspect for a lot of the week.
My other complaint is for people who missed the racing last week there is no attempt to tell the story of the week by setting up and then showing a replay of the key races with commentary …all you get is chat, music and weird camera angles of the horses passing the post .Why can’t they do what the BBC used to do back in the day each evening of Royal Ascot where if you didn’t know the result you could watch a replay ‘as if live’ with a quick scene set by Julian Wilson followed by the last 2 furlongs of the race with original commentary .
I’ve spent the week raving to people about what a great advert for the sport Cheltenham ( Tuesday in particular) was but as far as ITV was concerned there was no attempt on Saturday to show it or review it properly .March 19, 2023 at 08:46 #1640583“Why can’t they do what the BBC used to do back in the day each evening of Royal Ascot where if you didn’t know the result you could watch a replay ‘as if live’ with a quick scene set by Julian Wilson followed by the last 2 furlongs of the race with original commentary.”
I’ve thought about this as, back in the day, I too used to enjoy watching the late-night highlights of Cheltenham, the Grand National and Royal Ascot on the BBC.
But it was a different world, then, no internet.
In 2023 you can watch every race at Cheltenham right now if you want to at places like the sporting life website.
There’s just no need for those highlights shows any more.
