I’m not after a midnight highlights show,I just don’t see the point of trying to reflect what happened by showing jazzily edited replays from funky angles set to music like ITV do that really don’t tell the story… it’s a waste of time and a wasted opportunity to give people who might be attracted to the sport a chance to get an abridged version of the excitement and drama of each day that they may have missed for whatever reason.
Even with the internet , a terrestrial Tv racing programme on a Saturday after the event (that after all did spend plenty of time referencing the Festival) should be the easiest place to find a summary of what happened rather than assuming their Saturday viewers had all seen it already and all they wanted were pundits not terribly insightful reflections on it.
Something in the style of how the BBC did Ascot highlights back in the day but built into the Saturday show would be a better record of the event in my opinion .March 20, 2023 at 13:48 #1640754@ wordfromthewise
when could one ever accuse Chapman of having ‘taste’?

I am also sick of this. Particularly irritated that they stuck with it on the Tuesday rather than show more of Honeysuckle in the Winner’s Enclosure. Why they schedule the programme to end so soon after the last televised race is another conversation. You’d have thought they could have give Tipping Point a miss for once. Only a matter of time till the final race is missed altogether due to a delay.

I recall that happened more than once in the days of Channel 4 Racing. They also once had to leave the Dubai World Cup before the outcome of the stewards enquiry was announced.
March 21, 2023 at 17:14 #1640864Ed Chamberlin regularly reminds us that ITV are only permitted to show the first 5 races at Cheltenham live. I find this a bit odd as I would have thought ITV could show any race they wanted to. They show all 7 at Royal Ascot so why not Cheltenham?
Who is actually not permitting ITV to show all races at Cheltenham and why? Unfortunately Ed does not pass on this info, only that they are not permitted.March 21, 2023 at 17:31 #1640869Although as stated like about a billion times I don’t even watch it, the way the debate is headed I have to defend ITV1 a bit here.
They are a prime terrestrial channel, racing remains a minority sport – it’s not football – getting all the races at Royal Ascot is a treat, not a reasonable minimum expectation.
If I can – and did – massively enjoy the whole Cheltenham Festival, watched entirely on mute, live racing pictures only, on a betting app, surely all the TRF ITV Racing fans can endure watching just two races each day via another medium?
We’re talking about contests like the NH Chase, the Bumper, the Kim Muir and a Conditional Jockeys Hurdle here – with apologies to Alan’s excellent historical tribute to the first-named contest elsewhere, it’s hardly the crème de la crème of “the Fez,” is it?

I believe it is Racing TV. I am sure I read somewhere once it insisted on having two races per day exclusively live. Without that its subscription base would take a hit, so it claims.

That’s fair comment I think Ian. As I am sure I’ve said before, what other sport gets just about all of its ‘crown jewels’ out there live and free for all to see?
March 24, 2023 at 10:00 #1641164Odd Ian that you can’t bear watching ITV’s coverage but consider it a “treat” that they cover all 7 races at RA.
As you say yourself the other races are freely available elsewhere so why would Ed keep reminding us they are not permitted to show all 7 but not state the reason? Is it a secret? CAS may well be right but we don’t know for sure unless someone tells us and why would RTV be bothered if the races are freely available anyway?
Doubt ITV would be covering the sport with all the many presenters unless they were being well paid by the advertisers.March 24, 2023 at 10:27 #1641165A treat for those who do watch it, I meant. Yeats.
You are absolutely correct – it makes no difference to me either way.
My guess is that they don’t want to mention another broadcaster having coverage they don’t.
For many years back in the day the BBC behaved as if ITV didn’t even exist.

Since I started watching racing the revolving theme that keeps coming up is “attracting new people to the sport” surely telling the potential new people that might be attracted that they can continue to watch the races elsewhere is a good way of going about it…

March 24, 2023 at 11:45 #1641175Attracting new people to the sport, sure, attracting new people to other channels – never.
It’s ITV Racing, not BHA Racing, they won’t promote racing on another channel.

April 1, 2023 at 19:02 #1642161I’m guessing a line on ITV Racing today has amused Ben.
If so, fair play to them, Ben’s generation is more their target audience than mine is.
