I’m a bit surprised to see Buddy One is the outisder in the betting here. He won last year at the November meeting (over hurdles) and since then he mostly ran in big grade 1’s. 4th in the Stayers Hurdle, 2nd in the Liverpool Hurdle and 4th at the Stayers Hurdle in Punchestown. This season he won a chase at Galway, before finishing 3rd behind Heart Wood and Corbetts Cross. I don’t think Springwell Bay, Hyland and Resplendent Grey are anywhere near the level of opposition he faced this year. Hyland and Springwell Bay have to give him weight as well.
Buddy One 5/1
November 15, 2024 at 13:28 #1712750Buddy One does have superior hurdling form but – unlike his rivals – hasn’t impressed in his jumping on any of his two chase starts to date. For that reason May also find this test of speed at the trip against him unless they go a good pace which is not guaranteed. May need to make his own running which didn’t seem to suit him last time. I make him the fractional outsider of the four.
Resplendent Grey the opposite. Jumped safely on his only chase start at 2 1/2m. The first to be pushed along – crying out for this step up to 3m / has 2m4f speed. I make him the second fav.
Speedwell Bay was impressive on his only chase start at around 2 1/2m and his form over hurdles suggests 3m on this type of ground should suit. His size means he is likely to show a lot better form over fences.
Hyland has good chase form, but has had more runs so may not have as much improvement in him as the others. Particularly as imo he lacks physical scope.
I’ve backed Resplendent Grey and Speedwell Bay with a small LAY on Buddy One.
Value Is EverythingNovember 15, 2024 at 13:53 #1712754Another case of a horse being positively ridden and allowed the run of the race.
November 15, 2024 at 13:53 #1712755Rare poor ride from Sean Bowen.
Should’ve got closer sooner in a slowly run race.
Expected him to be held up but to give that much ground away in a sprint is asking for trouble.Value Is EverythingNovember 15, 2024 at 13:57 #1712756It happens all the time now, Ginger.
I honestly think the standard of riding nowadays is not high. It is the main reason I am not betting much nowadays.
I didn’t have a bet here, before I am accused of any pocket talking!
November 15, 2024 at 14:13 #1712758I don’t think it is quite as bad as that CAS. Although with AP (at least when he wasn’t riding for JP) Ruby, Dickie and Barry, we were blessed for a long time. It’s bound to be worse nowadays.
Value Is EverythingNovember 15, 2024 at 14:26 #1712760Yes, I agree. There was inevitably going to be a decline after that golden era.
Ironically, I actually think Bowen is the best of the current lot. I rate him higher than either of the Harrys anyway.
