I remember the Fischer-Spassky series well; live on BBC2, the Cold War at it’s finest
February 12, 2023 at 18:03 #1635238I remember it too – of course, the world was all in grainy black and white, back then.
Well, our telly was, anyway.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 12, 2023 at 18:34 #1635240Not forgetting the 69
moon landing when the
odd woman still wore
the odd silk stocking.
Those were the days my friend and we thought they’d never end.
The world appeared real back then
BLACK WAS JET BLACK AND WHITE WAS UNCANNILY A WHITER SHADE OF PALE. –BUMP….!
Nowadays the colours merge
and it’s difficult to distinguish truth from reality
and a lot of people are living IN DREAMS.I refuse to put the big O up on screen – just imagine him singing newly acquired heavenly inspired lyrics which echoed his predictive dreams of the onset of virtual reality and the mouthy spooks that forced it in shouting MODERN PROGRESS and hidden imperceptibly inside – the false addictive God of Huxley’s soma.
February 12, 2023 at 19:01 #1635246After 8 years of ITV and six years before the first moon steps the Big O edged in black and white and with real tears hidden behind thick black glasses echoed in song the forthcoming danger of the sandman (the godforsaking world wide web )and this was sung in varying pitch in the beautiful pre-dawn period when dreams were real and the impossible rarely happened and Teezy Wheezy or Curly Wurlys’s short back and thin sided Ayala won the Grand National @ 66/1.

you are quite correct in saying that Fischer defeated Mark Taimanov in the candidates quarter final by 6-0
however top Danish player Bent Larsen also went down by the same score in the semi-final before former World Champion Tigran Petrosian succumbed in the candidates final two and a half to Fischers six and a half, earning the American the right to play Spassky for the world title.
But that’s not the primary reason for me posting today, for you reminded me that I met and played against Mark when he was part of a Russian delegation visiting Birmingham. We actually met twice, the first being when I was selected to participate in a simultaneous display he gave at the council chambers.
For those not acquainted with such events,it’s where a strong player will at the same time play many other opponents.
I played a prepared line in one of my favourite openings at the time,as is usual in these events the solo player gets to play the white pieces in his games, the Kings Indian Defence managed to win the exchange (rook for knight) but was unable to force a win and perhaps somewhat generously Mark accepted a draw I offered when my game was still going with the clock creeping toward midnight, the games had started about 7-30 8-00pm
A few days later he was due to visit my club and play four of our best players, not myself, and to my surprise he came over to me with his translator,a student from Birm Uni,shook me by the hand exchanging a few words. With all the people he had met and played he actually remembered me!
good luck to allFebruary 13, 2023 at 14:42 #1635314Any excuse to wheel out the link to the feature I wrote on Kasparov after meeting him a few times – once to see him play, once socially, the other for this – in London in 2001: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/garry-kasparov-king-without-a-crown-9206901.html?amp

March 12, 2023 at 19:06 #1638746Ed has obs forgotten about SS and Altior, tho I accept that the CH is more prestigious than the 2MCC. I don’t think horses will ever be household names again, even if trainers start running them more often

Top right for me – It’s in for an intensive week.
It’s going to be a great Festival – so long as I remember that “Silence Is Golden.”

I’ve recently taken the game up to help pass some time on the quieter night shifts!
March 12, 2023 at 22:09 #1638769Kramnik avoided a rematch, TC, and eventually lost his title in 2007 to Viswanathan Anand, who Kasparov had previously annihilated.
The chess world is odd inasmuch as nearly all chess journalists/broadcasters were once aspiring players themselves and Kasparov said to me it’s kinda hard to get the media on your side when you’ve humiliated each and every one of them in matches in the past.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 14, 2023 at 11:42 #1639032Ian, this latest news will make you smile; announced this morning

The future of British racing’s mainstream television coverage on ITV has been secured until at least the end of 2026 after the sport’s principal broadcaster revealed the completion of a new three-year deal.
March 14, 2023 at 11:46 #1639036Oh, good-oh.
I had considered renting a shipping container, no self-respecting illegal asylum seeker would climb into, in the area but, as that treat is no longer available, I’m currently crashed out on my sofa, with zero intention of even turning the telly on, planning to watch every race via Betfair Exchange’s video service on mute.
If I so much as set eyes on, or hear a single syllable of a single word coming out of the mouth of any member of the ITV Racing, RacingTV, or ATR “teams” these next four days it’s liable to ruin my entire “Fez.”
Sincere apologies to the proprietor of TRF for this reply.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 14, 2023 at 11:51 #1639040I usually watch RTV/SSR but I did have to watch ITV on the Saturday before last. To be fair, I thought the coverage was quite good. Not perfect by any means but not terrible either.
I prefer the specialist channels and I recognise you can watch every race on Betfair. But I still think regular terrestrial coverage is very important for the sport.
March 14, 2023 at 12:23 #1639047All channels that are or had covered racing (be it the specialist ones or when it was on BBC and now ITV) have issues to them that we as fans would rather not have to be subjected to that others may very well like seeing but on the whole I do think they do the sport justice especially given that many other sports get barely a look in when we talk about TV coverage (be it terrestial or otherwise).
Racing on terrestial TV has to be mainly about the sport yes but also has to have an element of being an entertainment program as well hence some of the stuff that many of the harder core racing fans view like something they have just stepped in…..I think with two dedicated racing channels and ITV the sport has most of its bases covered and the news that ITV have inked a new 3 year deal to cover over 100 days racing every year until the end of 2026 is nothing but good news for the sport.
March 14, 2023 at 12:32 #1639051Watching the “experts” on RTV this morning, Lisa O’Neill came out with a quite incredible statistic: JP McManus has apparently won three of the last two runnings of the Boodles.
I know that JP is a legend but that really takes some doing.
March 14, 2023 at 12:39 #1639053It is for “gems” such as this excellent item of anecdotal evidence from the venerable Gladders that Chezza deploys the mute button on his phone on Betfair from the comfort of the Chezza “Chezz Longe” chez Chezza!
Chezza is delighted for “the sport” that this extension has been secured – just as long as Chezza neither has to watch nor listen to it.
