It’s a shame some of those 9 races aren’t being run on Sunday or even during the week, rather than all being clustered together in a 2 hour conveyor belt on a Saturday afternoon.
Wonder how many could name the last 5 winners of The Ebor, off the top of their head?September 2, 2022 at 16:48 #1613086I get what you mean but, tbh, the Sprint Cup and the Old Borough Cup at Haydock Park, the September Stakes and the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton Park – these have been Saturday races for as long as I can remember.
And I think the Ascot fixture – and the valuable 3yo 1m4f Handicap – are relatively new?
I’m actually used to the Ebor being on a Saturday now, the same as I’m used to the Champion Stakes being at Ascot, not Newmarket.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 2, 2022 at 18:11 #1613091I preferred the Champion Stakes when it was at Newmarket but I can understand the reasons why it was moved.

Wrong thread, wrong folder – the winter handy hints for keeping warm is next door in the Lounge, Gladders.

September 2, 2022 at 18:31 #1613096Actually, now you mention it, I think my interview to join the Racing & Football Outlook might have been on a Friday, then Editor Frank Carter asked me who I thought would win the September Stakes and more importantly why, and I said Bedtime (IIRC? off to Google it in a minute) of Dick Hern’s who duly obliged – fortunately!
And of course both it and the Sirenia used to be run on turf, the latter on a chute in the middle of the track?

That must have been back in the 1980s at the earliest.
The first Flat season I followed really closely was 1990 and both races were certainly run on the Saturday.
September 2, 2022 at 18:46 #1613098I just checked and Bedtime won it in 1984 – my interview definitely wasn’t on a Saturday.

Wonder how many could name the last 5 winners of The Ebor, off the top of their head?Back in the day, the Haydock races would be earlier in the afternoon on BBC, then about 3 o’clock Ch4 would show the races from Kempton.
The Ascot meeting must be one of these new ‘made up’ meetings….
September 2, 2022 at 20:51 #1613108The Sprint Cup at 3.30 will be squeezed in between the Thirsk 3.27 and the Stratford 3.34 on RTV.
September 2, 2022 at 22:28 #1613117It’s a cracking line up on ITV but there’s no room to squeeze in the Sirenia Stakes.
I’m in two minds Yates. You are right, so much quality racing in such a short period of time. But at the same time you open your paper tomorrow morning and you’re licking your lips at the line up.
Personally I would move Stratford and Thirsk to Sunday to give us some breathing space but no doubt they will have massive crowds tomorrow.
September 2, 2022 at 22:30 #1613118As for everyone pining for the good old days am I the only person who remembers the late 80s and early 90s when C4 would go three weeks at a time in the winter without showing any racing?
It was only when they took over Cheltenham that they remembered that jumps racing existed.

Cork All Star
I have the Saturday September 5th racecard from 1981 which includes the September Stakes. However, the Sirenia Stakes was on the Friday.
I note the Solario Stakes (won by Silver Hawk) was on the Saturday card but as far as I know has been run at Sandown otherwise.
September 3, 2022 at 06:36 #1613135OK, it appears that the September Stakes has been run on Saturday for at least 40 years. I think we can say it is an established Saturday race with no chance of being moved!
September 3, 2022 at 07:32 #1613137As stated, now Yeats has jogged my memory, I am sure it was run on a Friday in 1984, at least.
