They were both run on the Saturday in 1979, which was the September Stakes first staging when King George winner Ile De Bourbon, having his first outing since, started at 1/3 and was turned over by Cracaval.
September 3, 2022 at 08:48 #1613142I remember that Saturday renewal in 1979 – I think Cracaval was ridden by Steve Cauthen and hadn’t it previously won the Chester Vase?
Still so lazy after all these years – I really ought to check before posting these things!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 3, 2022 at 08:49 #1613143Correction, relied to much on memory there, Ile De Bourbon had won the 78 King George but stayed in training in 79.
September 3, 2022 at 08:56 #1613144Yep, Cracaval had won the Vase then was unplaced in Troy’s Derby with Shoemaker aboard. Ile De Bourbon had won the Coronation Cup by a wide margin on his previous start. Had the years mixed up and should have double checked – have the 79 form book in my hand now but was too lazy to check properly.
September 3, 2022 at 10:13 #1613151The September Stakes was run at Epsom from 1997 to 1999.

Story of my life so no criticism off me!
I think the reality is the September Stakes has been moved around a bit, and that includes venue switches.
From anecdotes on this thread, I remember: the Sirenia being on the 6f turf chute up the middle similar to Sandown’a five to this day, Silver Hawk winning the Solario (at Kempton not Sandown?) by something like five lengths in 1981, Bedtime winning the September also in 1981 on a day that definitely wasn’t a Saturday as I was in Farringdon having a week-day job interview when it happened, and Cracaval over turning Ile De Bourbon in 1979 and I’m pretty sure that WAS on a Saturday.
Confused?
I am!
Great memory triggers, though!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 3, 2022 at 11:42 #1613166Based on my form books and diaries from that era, the September and Sirenia Stakes were run on Friday all through the 80’s and switched to Saturday in 1990. And in that decade, the September Stakes was run over 1M 3F, which changed only when the race was switched to Epsom for three years and then continued at 1M 4F thereafter.
The Solario Stakes on a Friday is burned in my memory, as my first ever visit to Sandown was on a Friday and I saw Charlottown win it by 8L on his racecourse debut.
September 3, 2022 at 11:57 #1613169Correction – the 1989 diary says Friday for those races, the form book says they were run on Saturday that year.
Ch4 had shown them on the Friday in 1988, but didn’t cover the Friday meeting in 1989. So maybe they were the driving force for the change.
September 3, 2022 at 11:59 #1613170Great stuff, Alan, thank you.
1m3f30yds (extended race distances used to be my anorak specialised subject before all the remeasures began – John Randall, contriving to damn me with faint praise, said it was the one subject I was an authority on!) rings a faint bell for the September Stakes.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 3, 2022 at 12:27 #1613175I remember the Solario being run on the Friday simply because it was our local track and in 1988 I went with my grandad to see High Estate win in 1988 and I happened to record the CH4 Racing programme and noticed the coverage included us watching the horses walking round the paddock for the big race.
That was the second of three successive wins for Sir Henry & Steve Cauthen with Sanquirico the previous year and Be My Chief in 1989 (the last of Sir Henry’s 6 wins) when the race was run at Newcastle.
Strangely enough all three of those horses (apart from being trained by Sir Henry) also shared the same ignominy of abysmally failing to train on as 3 yr olds.
September 3, 2022 at 12:48 #1613182I thought Be My Chief won the Racing Post Trophy at Newcastle, not the Solario.
1989 was when a few horses fell in the Portland because of potholes in the Doncaster track. The St Leger was run at Ayr the following week, the October meeting at Newcastle and the November Handicap was run at Thirsk.
September 3, 2022 at 13:29 #1613193Sorry my bad getting my races mixed up
September 3, 2022 at 15:05 #1613220“Bryony-esque?”
Shut up – it was “Gina-esque!”
What a cracking ride and tactics from racing’s late developer.
Gave the volume a nudge today and fair play to Oli Bell, a lot less annoying than most.

September 3, 2022 at 16:37 #1613230Meritocracy and the racing industry are lifelong strangers to one another.
So I’m reduced to looking for positives among the beneficiaries of nepotism.
It’s a challenge.

Francesca excites Nathan. Surely that counts?
