I think the problem there was Persad declared Omaha City a horse with no chance as if delivering a bombshell opinion – the market already gave it little chance.

It’s casting doubt over short-priced contenders that is interesting – and less of a hostage to fortune as Persad learned that day.

    Colin,

It was Goodwood in May 2002, on the old Attheraces channel that covered all but ten of the courses at that time – and Omaha City won at 50/1.

It was later that year I first worked on the channel and I can assure you, Rishi was reminded about his comments every time the horse ran. Jim Ramsey was very much OK with his team offering up negatives, and would defend you if it backfired.

Precisely, I don’t need an ‘expert’ to tell me that a 1/5 shot will win and that a 50/1 won’t. Give me reasons to bet against the odds on or to have an each way at a big price.

Alan, wrong course, wrong price, did I get anything right?………..it was 20 years ago.

Persad appearing at the golf, at the tennis, at horse racing. What extra presenting powers to the norm does he possess?
It’ll be athletics next, and all similar to Balding’s journey.

    Rishi Persad, what’s the point?

“Alan, wrong course, wrong price, did I get anything right?”

Colin, as my former boss, the very dour but very accurate Ron Cox, Editor of the Racing Specialist, once said to me during one of my many well deserved tellings off having joined the title from uni, thinking I knew it all (but didn’t): “Get it right, Ian! Don’t guess – check.”

The correct answer is always there in all the old form books and databases online.

Interesting piece on Megan on the RP website – didn’t quite realise all the other things she currently has on the go outside of her presenting.

They’ll have Jason Weaver standing in for Robert Peston at this rate.

Jonathan Neesom on RTV is the man for form negatives. He is not afraid to identify dodgepots with fair form figures but who have shown signs of less than total gameness. I spoke to him at the races a few months ago and suggested he broadcast Neesoms Negatives to subscribers.
He gently declined the suggestion, recalling a long shot he’d rubbished years ago that won.

As Richard said, it’s rubbishing short-priced horses that’s interesting.

Trashing outsiders is a hiding to nothing game – no one is impressed if they duly get beat and you make a right “Persad” of yourself if one pops up at, say, 50/1.

Can’t see the point of changing something if it’s not for the better. BBC & ITV covered the horses in the paddock better with Graham/Lindley/McGrath/Francome sat in a box rather than having a dolly bird following some of the horses and commenting rather flusteredly.

Another change for change’s sake ITV introduced is when they display the racecard for a race they lead with the stall number rather than the number of the horse. It’s not better.

Not to mention playing music in the background every time a caption is shown.can’t we concentrate long enough to read it otherwise?

Who is the new woman? I haven’t seen her before. The whole show is appalling, hardly horses shown just loads of chat. It is all disjointed, I feel it will put off potential racegoers.

I read this thread and wonder if the comments (mine included) are from diehard, old school, long-term racing fans the show isn’t aimed at.

But then I think, who IS it aimed at, then?

Because I can’t see a casual audience engaging with it either.

It strikes me there are a lot of young presenters using the ludicrous term “in my lifetime” as if trying to kid themselves, as well as the audience, they are seasoned racing pundits.

You’ve been in the game five minutes – you don’t know “jack,” is my eye-rolling verdict.

And tbh some of them who’ve been in the game as long as me don’t know “jack” either – that’s why they are on TV doing what they do to earn a crust, because if they’re tried to make a living from backing their opinions they’d be residing in a semi-detached cardboard box under Waterloo Bridge.

It’s a great show in terms of the volume of racing they screen but, speaking of volume, keep the other sort on zero – muted!

It’s an ITV NINE tomorrow from Haydock Park, Kempton Park and Ascot.

I absolutely cannot knock the sheer volume of coverage – it’s turning the other kind of volume up that remains the issue.

    1.15 Haydock Park
    1.45 Haydock Park
    2.05 Kempton Park
    2.20 Haydock Park
    2.40 Kempton Park
    2.55 Haydock Park
    3.10 Ascot
    3.30 Haydock Park
    3.45 Ascot
