What about all those Swifties RTB? They will be up in arms at the mere suggestion. Seriously, Ed loves dropping names. Couldn’t believe how he kept going about the Fonz even though he just looked like some random old bloke.
Where was Johnny Murtagh when they needed his dulcet tones at the end?
Ed loves himself, but I think he probably loves Francesca even more. Got a little peck in at the end for no obvious reason. Francesca doesn’t even mime well.
June 23, 2024 at 00:37 #1699705Wondering how many of this week’s runners will end their lives in a squalid abbatoir? Too much to expect ITV to interrupt the gushing servility, I suppose.
June 23, 2024 at 02:15 #1699708Probably a few less than at a normal midweek meeting befair.
This week, ITV’s mission was presenting Royal Ascot and entertaining the viewer, which I think it did very well.
There are other areas of programing that can…..and should, highlight that darker side of the industry. Slaughtering horses has a place in horse racing, but the absolutely despicable way that was done in Ireland should be totally eradicated from not just racing, but animal slaughter in general.
June 23, 2024 at 13:16 #1699736The Fonz is an absolute legend. I, for one, was thrilled to see him being interviewed. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this weeks coverage of the racing and think ITV racing did a great job. Imo people who don’t like it should just pay to watch it elsewhere and leave ITV to those of us who can’t afford to subscribe to other channels. I was chatting to someone in a shop who was going home to watch it: I bet it’s the only time she watches racing.
June 23, 2024 at 13:51 #1699739I don’t have a problem overall with them I think they cover it very well but some individuals such as Ed I certainly wouldn’t miss.
The more I know the less I understand.
June 23, 2024 at 14:02 #1699740I usually watch SSR or RTV but I did see some of ITV’s coverage on Friday. I think it was reasonably good. There are some things I think could be done better but by and large we should be grateful one of the main channels is still showing horse racing free to air. Racing will miss it if it goes.
June 23, 2024 at 14:26 #1699743It’s not so simple as saying go and watch the pay channels. Some people who might enjoy racing can’t afford those channels, and shock horror there’s rubbish content on those as well. You have several presenters who cross between the two.
Yes, mainstream will be different, but it doesn’t need to be so dumbed down? It’s dumbed down because that’s the way of the world. Ascot itself has dumbed down. That said Harvey’s antics have no place on any channel. The guy’s just a buffoon. He is far from alone amongst racing presenters in doing just about anything for money. Take a look at Lucky when he pops over to the US. Seems happy to be made a fool of as long as he see’s the dollar signs. The biggest problem with ITV Racing is trying to appeal to everyone, and ending up appealing no one. Trying a little too hard to appeal to those who think the likes of This Morning and Loose Women represent riveting entertainment, for me doesn’t work.
June 23, 2024 at 14:42 #1699745That’s rubbish. I spoke to Nick when he came back from the Breeders Cup and we were both eulogising about Zenyatta. He loves American racing ( as do I). What’s wrong with people who watch This Morning and Loose women enjoying racing? By the way, I watch This Morning and Loose women sometimes. Does that mean I’m far too much of an airhead to be on this forum? One of the problems with racing is it’s far too up itself sometimes….Oh, and I really like Luke, too…..
June 23, 2024 at 15:25 #1699748I was polite enough not to call your opinion rubbish. It’s an opinion, there are no rights and wrongs.
You said yourself these people only watch once a year, they are not attracted by racing, they watch purely because it’s on a box in front of them. I think ITV Racing should be aiming higher than that.
I don’t really care if Luck enjoys US racing, but he is happy chase the dollar, and they are happy to take the piss out of him when he goes over there. If you only watch terrestrial you wouldn’t have seen it so I don’t see how you can even pass comment.
You like Harvey, I think the guy’s a complete buffoon. Again, it’s just opinions.
June 23, 2024 at 15:43 #1699749I do agree with you about racing to an extent being ‘up itself’, but I would like to think I am about as far removed from any of that nonsense as you can get. Pretty much nothing I write on here tows a line.
June 23, 2024 at 16:59 #1699752“You said yourself these people only watch once a year, they are not attracted by racing, they watch purely because it’s on a box in front of them. I think ITV Racing should be aiming higher than that.”
Why? Racing fans will watch anyway, people who aren’t really racing fans but like getting into a summer mood watching Wimbledon on telly (crowd shots of strawberries and cream and pretty suntanned WAGs watching centre court action, yay any plucky Brits who get through to 2nd week) and a little bit of Test cricket at Lords (crowd shots of the band and groups of mates in Freddie Flintoff masks, yay if England beat the Aussies) like to include Royal Ascot (top hats and frocks, bit of Royal toadying, who’s in the carriages?).
June 23, 2024 at 17:12 #1699754The actual racing fan is a dying breed. You will eventually be left with those who just see the actual sport as a sideshow.
Just because the same thing might be happening elsewhere doesn’t make it any better for racing.
June 23, 2024 at 17:17 #1699755I do think the ITV coverage has lost its way a bit and could do with a freshen up. It does come across as a bit of a love-in at times. Couple of real cringeworthy segments this week I’m afraid.
I guess it is hard to strike a balance though between providing info to the racing fan and entertaining the casual viewer.
June 23, 2024 at 18:35 #1699765Well, they’ve won a couple of BAFTAs so they must be doing something right. And those people that only watch it on tv once a year might just go racing if they see it can be a fun day out.
June 23, 2024 at 21:05 #1699776Exactly, a fun day out with a few horses in the background.
How many people nominate and vote on BAFTA’s, and who are they? I am sure there is absolutely no chance of any brown-nosing despite what looks like zero transparency. For the record it beat off the Womens World Cup and the Wimbledon Final.
June 23, 2024 at 23:49 #1699787While accepting the fact that they cannot please everybody cormack15, what would you suggest to ‘freshen up’ their coverage?
Negatives (in my opinion).
1. Toadying.
2. Luke Harvey doing childish things.
3. Luke Harvey ‘interviewing’ jockeys at the start.
4. Betting is fun…..and not that awful Brian Gleeson production.
5. Make the fashion presentation more professional.
7. Chamberlain is a decent enough lead presenter for this, but needs to tone down his endless and nauseating Toadying!!
8.Positives.
1.
2.June 24, 2024 at 08:38 #1699793I didn’t mean to be rude to you stilvi. Sorry about that. It’s just that I really like Nick and I get a bit defensive about him.
