the thing about detroit city is he can cruise at high speed and then really lengthen his stride and take lengths out of the field it seconds
Its all very good doing that in poor handicaps (Greatwood) and against 4 years olds (admitidly a decent looking bunch) but he has yet to do it or prove it against the best in a race that is a fair test.
Detroit City is a horse with plenty of stamina theoretically the pace of that race shouldn’t have suited him any more than it suited Hardy Eustace.
Getting 4lbs, getting first run were clearly a big help. It was a joke of a race that bares little or no comparison to what he is going to face at Cheltenham. They went a right gallop today in the ground, just a different nature of a race altogether from the Bula.
Getting first run made little difference in my opinion. Detroit City took lengths out of Hardy Eustace then idled. Four pounds is one bad jump I’m not one for taking too much notice of weight differences unless you’re talking in excess of half a stone. I really don’t believe a pound or two makes any appreciable difference.
January 28, 2007 at 16:34 #36770the international was definatly tactical, but the slow pace should have suited hardy eustace as much as detroit city. we know detroit city has stamina, he won the cesarewitch on the flat and won the triumph in record time. his trainer has always considered him more of a stayer, what we didnt know was if he had the pace for 2 miles, and he showed in the international, which was effectively a 6 furlong sprint that he does!
I don’t care what he beat last year tbh, what i care about is what he’s done this year, beating your own age/ability type is a lot different to beating seasoned warriors
If i’m wrong i will pay
January 28, 2007 at 16:35 #36772Presumably all these who think he has no chance are the same people that thought he had no chance in the Cesarewitch off his revised mark.
I know he is grey and his price is hype-related, but the horse has not put a foot wrong since Hobbs got him and I for one hope he bolts up in the Champion Hurdle.
January 28, 2007 at 16:39 #36773Aftertiming alert
Laid him then Smithy and had my horse not took it up too early i think he would have beat him, instead of finishing second
But the e/w bet paid for the Lay ;)

January 28, 2007 at 16:40 #36774well unfortunatly as he is a 5 year old the only form he has from last season is in juvenile races!
i have a small anti post bet on detroit city, but i think his price will drift on the day, and hopefully people will continue to back these irish horses so his price gets bigger and bigger!
mr warner and hobbs will have been as pleased as punch with what they saw today!
January 28, 2007 at 16:44 #36775What I can’t get my head round is why people think that the slowly-run International would have suited DC.
The best performance of his life came in a Triumph Hurdle that, visually, appeared to be run at a breakneck gallop. As far as I can see, the faster they go in the CH, the better for Detroit City.

No one is suggesting that, but given how the Bula was run he was in the best position etc to win it where as HE was given a poor enough ride starting his challenge at one side of the course and then finishing on the other.

.
Correct Smithy and imo you’ve got to ignore that form and if you do, do people really think the Greatwood form is good enough to win a CH, i don’t think it’s anywhere near good enough
DC has it all to prove imo, unlike the other market leaders
January 28, 2007 at 16:50 #36778putting detroit city aside, does anyone think anything else will get past hardy?
January 28, 2007 at 16:53 #36779Brave Inca, Macs Joy, Straw Bear, Afsoun ( latter more needed) probably have the ability to beat HE on the day
This is why DC should not be the price he is and is the lay of the meeting
January 28, 2007 at 16:56 #36780Empty,
I think you doth treat that Triumph Hurdle with more contempt than it doth deserve. A very fast race and bomb-proof form imo.
The price may be wrong, but that doesn’t mean he might not be a top-class hurdler in the making.
January 28, 2007 at 17:00 #36781Brave Inca, Macs Joy, Straw Bear, Afsoun ( latter more needed) probably have the ability to beat HE on the day
in 2005 brave inca and macs joy couldnt beat hardy eustace, they did last year when he was all wrong, and today he has shown that he is back, with NO excuses from the beaten rivals.
also BI wont have mccoy.
straw bear is simply not good enough as the supreme hurdle form hasnt really worked out and they all finished in a heap.
afsoun was miles behind detroit city and would need to improve a stone atleast

No i don’t m8, that’s last seasons form and is irrelevant to this season imhaho
Has DC improved? is any of his form this season anywhere as good as that?
People mention horses from race, except for Afsoun and maybe Blazing Bailey i see them doing well in another code, not as hurdlers
From RP race analysis
Afsoun had been the subject of a scare at the weekend, and although connections insisted he had done all his work and checked out clear in all subsequent tests he clearly wasn’t at his best here. He sweated up beforehand, when the delays at the start can not have helped
the REAL Afsoun showed up at Haydock imo
