If the first and second lock horns again at the Curragh, I am convinced that New Approach will reverse the Newmarket placings with Henrythenavigator.

May 3, 2008 at 15:52 #161372I just don’t get these kind of anti-Godolphin comments, and I’m truly not picking on you Flash.
Surely it just counts as “fair comment” to say that Godolphin do appalingly given their equine resources…
May 3, 2008 at 15:52 #161373The first two are obviously a street ahead of the others, but I’m not convinced the form of the race in general will work out over a mile. I can’t quite quantify it yet, but looking at the result something says to me that the premium today was on stamina rather than speed, the front two notwithstanding (New Approach needed 50 yards more IMO). Those near the front of the pack should be feared over 10f as much as 8f.
Also, if connections stick with the original plan of Irish Guineas then Irish Derby for New Approach after seeing him today then someone needs shooting IMO! The horse looks like he needs 12 (or maybe just 10, but I’d doubt it) furlongs as soon as humanly possible.
May 3, 2008 at 15:58 #161374Interestingly the sectionals according to RUK weren’t anything exceptional and the last furlong was pretty slow.
That wouldn’t have suited anything trying to come from way off the pace so Henrythenavigator did well to win.
New Approach showed good speed but didn’t go mad in front and I would’ve expected him to finish the race a bit quicker than he seemingly did seeing as he’d completely dictated the pace.
It may well be that the form works out but I remain to be convinced, there’s something I find not quite satisfactory about it.
May 3, 2008 at 16:25 #161382I’m not certain Henrythenavigator will go on from here to win more Group 1’s over a mile. Seems a strange thing to say I know and he was a deserved winner today but I’m just not sure that races run differently to todays will be an advantage.
New Approach was coming back again at the line and he’ll certainly get ten furlongs.
New Approach had everything fall right for him today but wasn’t good enough. If the race was run any differently i’d expect Henry to beat him further given his ground.. Which is obviously the key. Irish then St James Palace? Or will he go straight to ascot..
May 3, 2008 at 16:46 #161383Given that new approach had things his own way and still didnt win,not sure how and why given good or faster ground he should beat the winner again over a mile, given how much ground the winner made up in the last furlong and half
May 3, 2008 at 16:46 #161384One for the eclipse?
May 3, 2008 at 16:51 #161385Am I the only person who thought it was an unsatisfactory race? New Approach got to the lead early and pretty much uncontested and Manning decided to lob along at a mediocre pace (and fair play for him for trying to pinch the race this way), which caused a number of horses behind to pull hard and not settle, and therefore not run their race.
May 3, 2008 at 16:54 #161386Five day ban for Manning for whip abuse.
Change of rules needed??

May 3, 2008 at 16:55 #161387and Ravens Pass champion sprinter ???
there again I have been drinking rather heavily in the sun.
He was the only one to my mind though (exc. the winner) who didn’t struggle to pick up when the fav quickened the pace.
Yes granted he’d been switched off at the back but he made up ground yet couldn’t make any impression in the final furlong. Not for the first time did he not quiet see out the mile.
6f written all over him to my bleary eyes.
The first two would fight out the finish every time over a mile IMO.

Should those two meet in the Eclipse, offer me 5/6 New Approach in a match and you will find yourself lacking an arm.

Nope I’ve already stated as much if you care to read my posts, idiot. (Only joking of course
).I take Aragon and New York’s points completely I can’t say what they are saying is wrong and they may well be right, dunno someting is just bugging me about the race.
Bulwark – could be an interesting re-match between the first two in the Eclipse, no reason why both shouldn’t get 10f on breeding.
May 3, 2008 at 17:00 #161392The first two were well clear of the rest, a dead heat would have been the "fairest" result. It will give Murtagh plenty of confidence for the rest of the season.
I’d have liked to have seen Raven’s Pass ridden more positively, he would have been third instead of fourth imo, but a step down to the 7f Jersey stakes looks the sensible option and a likely winning one.
Not sure about the July Cup for him, it depends who comes over from abroad. It will be a very hot race, that’s for sure.
It still might be worth trying him over a mile a some stage given fast ground and an easy track, Goodwood for example, or maybe the Breeders Cup Mile.

I’m quite impressed that you manage to get to halfway to be fair.

I disagree. New Approach got the run of the race but Henry came from behind and did him for toe. I doubt he’ll ever finish in front of Henry over a mile.
May 3, 2008 at 17:40 #161396I agree with that view Carvs on todays form Henry won fair and square, the last two furlongs have been reported all week as having the worst ground and it was roundabout the point going into the last 2 furlongs where New Approach took a few lengths out of the field and the finishers looked stuck trying to catch him, that is what I liked about henrys performance, and would rate it very highly as a single piece of form. However Ive always found Kingmambos colts are largely unpridictable and on 2yo form henry would substantiate that belief, so we dont know for certain if he will come out next time in the same form.
With Henry almost certain to go for a guineas double, will the New Approach now think about epsom in stead of the Irish guineas is the question?
