Can’t wait for this race to be over now. Its got a bit like the Gold Cup in that the talking and analysis has gone on for months (and maybe because I can’t really make my mind up). I can’t fully write off New Approach, but as I was never on him, fell the boat has been well and truly missed. I’ve never been a fan of Ibn Khaldoun despite the fact I wasa big fan of both his parents). I’ve always also had huge doubts on Raven’s Pass, but were he to win, have to admit I would be more disappointed in myself than surprised. The rest could be anything or nothing and so can’t really be trusted, which means I too (having done my dough on Jupiter) won’t be betting another cent on it. But good luck to those still going.

Think UN has a very good point here. Have hardly looked at the race but will be backing somthing that has had a recent run. Probably Raven’s Pass and/or Stimulation e/w.
Good luck!

May 3, 2008 at 12:36 #161329If we see the same New Approach as last year then anything above even money is a like a nicely wrapped gift with a ribbon on top!
However, it’s the first classic of the year, early in the season, many questions to be answered and he’s worth opposing.
John Gosden was more than happy with Raven’s Pass’ effort in the Craven. He travelled well that day and only went down by a shd to the unbeaten favourite for the Derby, with the a gap of six-lengths back to the third. It was a solid effort by a horse who probably needed the run and it was proof that he had retained, although not necessarily improved, his juvenile ability.
His seven-length demolition of the talented and consistent City Leader in the Solario proved what immense class he possesses and, with conditions in his favour today, is sure to go close.
A number of ew fancies in the race. Henrythenavigator is incredible value at double figures. He was not happy on the soft ground he encountered in his two defeats last year to New Approach and Saoirse Abu, respectively and will be seen to better effect on better ground. Aiden O’Brien has a fantastic record in the mile classics and this horse has more than enough ability to reach the frame.
Moynahan is my pick of the outsiders. Held in high regard by his trainer. he’s sure to improve after a quiet juvenile campaign and the step up to eight furlongs. His impressive maiden defeat of Iguazu Falls (placed in group three company on his next two outings) and Hamaadi (a close fourth in the Cornwallis) does not entitle him to reach the placings, but it’s good enough for a horse who, as I previously said, is sure to improve.
May 3, 2008 at 12:51 #161331Hey Flash – your avatar is actually framed on my wall.

Very good. I’ve actually managed to get one to fit properly at long last lol.
Certainly better than looking at your ugly mug every time!!
May 3, 2008 at 14:34 #161352Can never rule out Aidan O’Brien can you? Thought New Approach was going to battle the winner out of it close home but Henrythenavigator wins.
May 3, 2008 at 14:41 #161353Looked brilliant guineas and a brilliant run by the winner, no two ways about it, wouldnt have picked it in a million years especially as O’brien only appeared to pick him from the pack, over Jupiter Pluvius about a week or so ago
Congratulations Myles, Im gobsmacked…
May 3, 2008 at 14:47 #161354I’m not certain Henrythenavigator will go on from here to win more Group 1’s over a mile. Seems a strange thing to say I know and he was a deserved winner today but I’m just not sure that races run differently to todays will be an advantage.
New Approach was coming back again at the line and he’ll certainly get ten furlongs.
Raven’s Pass wasn’t given a very good ride he had an impossible task unless he was a machine, there’s held up and there’s held up. Maybe the draw didn’t help but he was given way too much to do. I wouldn’t write him off just yet.
Godolphin – It always gives me a warm glow when I see them fail so miserably.
May 3, 2008 at 15:00 #161356Sheikh Mo spends all that money on horses, and then AOB still pulls one out of the bag to win. Don’t think Magnier was there today but I’d be in hysterics if I was him.

So would I. Good thing is at least you know Sheikh Mohammed can’t go and steal ooops buy Henrythenavigator. I’d love to see him try and persuade the Magnier’s to sell lol.

Truth is Godolphin are awful thankfully. Yes they do get a certain amount of success but given their money and resources its impossible not to.
May 3, 2008 at 15:04 #161358They should sell him to Godolphin IMO (having secretly gelded him…)
May 3, 2008 at 15:16 #161359I have to say that, despite not finding the winner, seeing all 3 of Sheikh Mohammed’s interests beaten brings a one hell of a smile to my face.
When will Godolphin learn that shipping horses back from Dubai a week before a classic just does not work?

Lets hope they don’t. Serves them right for buying half the Dewhurst field.
I will shut up now before someone or other has a go at me. I think my dislike of that organisation is quite well known by now.

I just don’t get these kind of anti-Godolphin comments, and I’m truly not picking on you Flash.
They have lots of money. They like horse racing. They offer people lots of money for promising horses, which is sometimes accepted. Some of these horses turn out to be good and some end up being not so good.
No-one forces anyone to sell (hopefully).
As far as I am aware, Godolphin and their representatives do not act disrespectfully or arrogantly. They like to win but they do not expect to win. Unlike various business-people in certain other sports, they seem to have some degree of loyalty to their key staff and do not chop and change on a daily basis when things don’t go well.
Surely we should live and let live, innit?
May 3, 2008 at 15:22 #161363What does anyone make the winner, I think that is up around 130 the first two?
Wonder if we are due a recurrence of 2005 when Fallon first took over as stable jockey, if the rain comes tonight then an O’biren/Murtagh double could be on the cards. Surprised the bookies are still unphased about Kitty Matcham, that will surely come in for support tomorrow regardless after todays performance.

I’d say around 124 / 125 although I haven’t rated the race. I’m not convinced its a 130 performance. I’m not even sure Raven’s Pass ran to his Craven form but that may have been the ride he was given / the draw / the way the race was run.
Might just be me but I’m not convinced this form will work out. The third was prominant throughout, the second made the running but it didn’t look a crawl of a pace. Dunno, there’s just something that doesn’t convince me that if you ran this race ten times you wouldn’t get 4 or 5 different winners.

On the contrary, I’m pretty sure that the two best horses today finished 1st and 2nd, and would fill the same two positions (not sure in which order) in at least nine of your ten runnings!!!
