ah yes Jack, missed that. Looks like Line of Duty has come out as well.

P of Spain is definitely a bit overpriced at 25s I would say. The only thing I’ve dug up on the trends, is that his breeding doesn’t scream classic winner. The last 20 winners have been by a sire thats recorded a min best RPR of 123. Lope De Vega is a bit short of that and did all his racing in France. There’s not much on the Dam side either. Suspicion that he will probably be a bit better over further and I’m from the thinking that the Trophy Stakes form is not very good last year in comparison to previous years. However, in this field he has to have a squeek, so 25s seems generous!
April 24, 2019 at 16:53 #1420549According to Racing TV’s interview with Charlie Hills at the Craven meeting on POS…
“We had a bit of a setback with him in January, and he had a good time there during that month just walking.
“I’m just concerned about his fitness. He is in a good place and is feeling very good – but he probably got a bit tired in the last furlong. It is a little bit of a race against time if we do want to go to Newmarket.
“The good thing is we have the French Guineas a few days later, and there is the Irish Guineas as well. He will do a little bit of work on Saturday, and next week will tell us where we are.”

My opinion:
POS wasn’t far behind Magna Grecia, but had had a full two year old season where as the winner’s career barely a month old. So Phoenix Of Spain’s ability looks far more exposed than Magna Grecia. Hills horse also well beaten by Too Darn Hot despite Frankie giving him a lot of rope. Tbh I’d expect quite a few to improve past POS. Even so, around 31/1 on the machine looks good value on the face of it; but that’s probably allowing for the chances of getting him there and being fit enough. Personally with this type of horse I’d rather wait and take a slightly shorter price on the day – after listening to the trainer and seeing POS in the paddock (racing tv willing).Value Is EverythingApril 24, 2019 at 17:05 #1420550I think Persian King has come out in the latest decs no? There are a few thats disappeared from the exchanges Persian King, Jash, Line of Duty, Zakouski, AVD,
April 24, 2019 at 17:18 #1420569Ginge – Calyx was pencilled in for a race three weeks before the Coventry and picked up a small niggle hence the rushed race prior. They knew he was good all along, he went off 2/1F for the Coventry with a Coolmore hotpot up against him.
I don’t think it was an afterthought personally reading through Grimthorpe’s comments –
https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/calyx-team-poised-for-classic-call/165575
He’s also been in work just as long as TDH had been, so they were being trained the same way towards the race.
Thanks for that. Kev. Didn’t know – or maybe forgot – Calyx had been penciled in three weeks before the Coventry. But yes, they knew Calyx was good at that point. Personally, I still don’t think JG realised quite how good until shortly before the Coventry – because he’d improved an enormous amount in a short space of time.
I agree this is absolutely NO afterthought – team Abdullah always had this as number 1 target, TDH or no TDH – if getting him here fit and well. Suspect Calyx was going no more than ok a couple of weeks ago (hence why JG wasn’t more encouraging)…
…But Calyx has (once again) made great stides in a short space of time. Not surprising because that’s what Calyx does.

Fingers and everything else crossed.
Value Is EverythingApril 24, 2019 at 17:52 #1420973I agree the mile is a worry after not running in a while but the 7/2 Fav has also never run over further than 6F.
Yes, and I think it’s even more likely to be a problem for Ten Sovereigns, Kev. Unlike the favourite at least Calyx is bred to get a mile. It’s Calyx’s possible slightly exitable temperament and speed shown at two that may count against his chances of staying. Personally, I think Ten Sovereigns is a poor favourite – not on form, just stamina-wise – and bound to drift. imo There shouldn’t be anything in the market between the two main Coolmore hopes.
You asked me what Coolmore might do tactically regarding Ten Sovereigns, Frenchy. They’ll probably run a pacemaker or two. If I were them, I’d set a good innitial pace – in order to hopefully settle TS in behind horses at least in mid-div if not held up. Then slow it down mid-race – because they’ll be hoping not to test his stamina too much. Expect MG to race closer to the pace and be in a fairly prominent position tracking the pace (if successful/allowed to dictate tactics) when the sprint for home begins. MG also already proven in a similarly run race at Doncaster.
However, Godolphin should be alert to Coolmore’s probable tactics and Royal Marine will want an even pace throughout. So if I were Godolphin I’d make sure something takes the pace along mid-race to ensure a truly run race.
Value Is EverythingApril 24, 2019 at 18:41 #1421071Would be funny if Calyx announced a non runner tomorrow with all the money down.
April 24, 2019 at 18:59 #1421074Would make sense then GT, AOB has left in horses that could go off quick. Madhmoon will need a decent even gallop as well, so a bit concerne on that front. Godolphin have left in only 2 I think, Royal Marine and Dark Vision.
April 24, 2019 at 21:43 #1421102Madhmoon will need a decent even gallop as well, so a bit concerne on that front
Don’t be concerned about the pace for Madhmoon Frenchy. The owner has Mohaather in there for him.
April 24, 2019 at 23:27 #1421254I’m going to add Advertise to the bet I already have on Calyx.
In my mind Advertise has arguably the strongest form coming to the race, 20s in exchange look good to me.April 25, 2019 at 09:40 #1421469Ah yes, good point Botchy, I didn’t make that connection before. Trouble is though, I imagine if they want to get Mohaather home, they won’t let him go off in front, he’ll be nicely covered up. In fact a muddling pace would suit him more as he has a lot of pace. Unless the owners decided to sacrifice him to benefit Madhmoon, but I can’t see that can you?
April 25, 2019 at 11:04 #1421648I quite like the look of MG more than most as I see more positives (certainly more than I find for TS), he has won at a mile and has only had 3 races so room to improve, POS was having his 5th race in the Racing post trophy, however I don’t like the top of the betting as I find negatives for them and with that I prefer an outsider so for that I like Hannons walkinthesand..
April 25, 2019 at 14:15 #1421727Mike007 showing his class hoping for a brilliant horse to pull out injured to help his bet.
I think the pace will come from a few of the AOB horses, maybe Mohawk? Kick On made all the in the Fielden, he’ll probably be up with the pace also as they see him as more of a 10F horse.
April 25, 2019 at 14:39 #1421729Bravo Kev,
let’s hope Mr.007 will be disappointed
April 25, 2019 at 18:11 #1422339@Chaos
think this race is to open to call, Persian King is going to the French 2000 according to A. Fabre. As you said Jac Turgrnev was beaten easily by my choice for the Derby in Cap Francais
Quite right Chaos shame Persian King won’t be there it’s turning into a real puzzle, some needed their last run others might not like the course, stamina doubts with a few, injury problems with others..it’s heading towards a very non eventful race without the top players and whoever wins this will have to prove his worth.
No point chopping and changing I’m sticking with my two Set Piece and Mohaather to light up the Rowley Mile on Saturday 4th May…

Good luck with your Derby horse Chaos
hope Mosse is on board for you, what a class act he is.
Jac xThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 25, 2019 at 19:25 #1422487Kev you got it all wrong that’s not why I said it.
April 25, 2019 at 20:06 #1422524No malice intended from what I read
I thought the same Mike but perhaps swap funny with ironicGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 25, 2019 at 20:24 #1422527Okay, if there really was no malice intended then I got that wrong (maybe due to not being a native speaker as you mentioned earlier Nathan) and say no offence!
