Yes, she showed the same tenacious will to win that Gustav Klimt has demonstrated in his two wins to date.

The Pentagon does have a stamina-packed pedigree and was ridden by Ana yesterday, suggesting the win caught Ballydoyle by surprise as much as the rest of us!

I expect he’ll be involved in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud at the end of the season en route to 1m 4f races next year. Hard to say whether he is Derby class at this point but he looks as likely a runner as any.

The excellent Dan Briden made an interesting point on Twitter yesterday. Two of Gustav Klimt‘s siblings palpably failed to train-on from 2 to 3. Does that worry any Gus backers?

I don’t think they will be sending The Pentagon to Saint Cloud in October, not with that fast ground action.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we only see him once more this season, maybe in the group 3 at Leopardstown during September that Australia won, or perhaps the Racing Post Trophy.

He was quietly fancied yesterday. I read somewhere that he was 14/1 in the morning – not sure if that is true. He was backed from an opening show of 6/1 into 9/2 so there was money for him.

Let’s hope he is more of an Australia or Camelot rather than a JFK or Indian Chief.

To perform like that in one of the most, if not the most illustrious flat maiden in Ireland (previous winners include Australia, New Approach and Teofilo) would suggest he is the real deal.

I have to ask, who is Indian Chief? He doesn’t ring any bells. JFK was a bit of a nutcase, and showed signs of it as a 2yo.

The Pentagon is one they obviously thought might need the second run.
The 2yos are very raw on their debut this year, and still raw on second run, really need to give them a few runs before seeing their potential.
He was originally entered at Newmarket on Friday, probably in search of good ground which they ultimately got at the Curragh, so I’d say he’s regarded fairly highly.

The Pentagon ran only to a RPR of 49 on his debut. I haven’t got his updated figure yet but he beat a horse rated 82 by more than 8 lengths yesterday.

The Topspeed rating for his debut run was 20 and yesterday he recorded a Topspeed figure of 90. That’s a hell of an improvement by anyone’s standard.

As a comparison, Gustav Klimt ran to a Topspeed mark of 79 on HIS second start and he earned a new rating of 93 in the Superlative yesterday.

I don’t think The Pentagon has a hope in hell of staying a mile and a half based on the way he won his race yesterday. He looks fast enough for a Guineas to me and his style adds to that thinking in my mind. He looks a lot faster than Camelot ever did. I don’t view him as a plodder at all.

He will have to be ridden totally differently if he’s ever to try a Derby. I’ll go with the eye and not the pedigree here.

I’d have him second favourite in the Guineas betting myself. When you consider he is the same odds as De Bruyne Horse, who is being mulled as dropping to 5F next time, it doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Indian Chief was favourite for the Dante in 2013 following a win in a Leopardstown maiden when he was trained by O’Brien. He came third in the Dante beaten 2 lengths earning an RPR of 110.

He is now with Rebecca Bastiman and is rated 66 by the Handicapper.

Ouch, that was a poor Dante. A poor year even for middle distance colts.

Regarding The Pentagon, Aidan has mentioned the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, so obviously considers him a Guineas horse.

You say that, but he won the race with Highland Reel a couple of years back.

But, Aidan has mentioned the Futurity, National and Dewhurst Stakes for Gustav Klimt, so he would appear to be THE Guineas horse. :-)

True he did but I don’t think you could ever really say that he saw Highland Reel as a ‘Guineas horse’.

By Guineas horse, I meant a horse that would run in a Guineas even if he might subsequently step up, like Australia.

The Pentagon earned a RPR of 105 for his win on Saturday. Gustav Klimt got 107 on the same RPR scale.

2 lbs between them, yet one is 7/1 for Newmarket and the other 33/1.

That seems too much of a disparity to me.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Gustav Klimt to have a small break and go National then Dewhurst.

Verbal Dexterity goes Tyros on Thursday week, then all being well National then Dewhurst.

Looks like the National Stakes will be very informative.

I’ve put a bit in the Derby thread, and it’s a bit speculative as he’s not run yet
but NELSON is well bred, like so many of O’Brien’s, and could be
interesting at a price (33/1). He’s by Frankel out of Moonstone, so
enough speed for the 2000 on one side and enough stamina for the Derby on the other.
He’s entered in the right races, the Futurity Stakes the National Stakes and the Derby,
along with the likes of The Pentagon. He’s in the “could be anything” category, again,
like so many of O’brien’s, but he’ll give me a bit of interest watching him between now
and next May/June to see if he’s good enough. Frankel’s progeny haven’t maybe quite lived
up to his star billing, but it’s early days yet.
