Davis was very poor during his conference speech from the little I saw on the news. It was as if he thought many on the floor probably hated him and was wondering who was going to stab him in the back.
I havnt’ seen enough of Cameron or Fox yet to make my call.
Agreed, but something has to win !
I have to admit my failure in the original objective here(losing 10% of my body weight) but I did manage to lose some 10lbs without much effort at all. Even that has meant I feel slimmer and better with an inch or two off my waist, I sleep easier especially when resting on my side and I dont ruin my chinos when rubbing against the steering wheel while getting in and out of the car. If I had made the necessary lifestyle change and started commuting on a bike, I have no doubt I would have doubled what I have lost. One habit I managed to change a little was having full lunches each day during the summer. The salads I had instead were more than satisfying.
I intend to achieve my original objective over the next six months and will be forwarding my pledge amount above to Debra in the next week.
It’s probably not the male thing to discuss diet and body weight but Sunday’s article in the Obsever on Obesity and Diabetes is a timely reminder of the dangers for individuals and society.

Agree with tbe Bear. If winning was the first and only priority, he would have won this race, not necessarily only for work omitted at the business end. I believe he was overconfident and trying to win easily. Some might say he was looking after the 3yo against these older horses. He received criticism on the Betfair forum too. I had a paltry interest in the horse winnng.
I Luv it !!!
Fallon’s interview on the BBC about this subject was interesting. My interpretation ( or reading between the lines!) was that not only are Ladies weaker physically but they do not have the mental toughness/astuteness that the top gents possess. He should know ! I also recall him intimating that the Ladies would be absoutely mad not to exploit the availability of an allowance.
Of course the allowance would not be mandatory; those ladies who might wish to carry equal weight to gents should be accomodated. I’m sure the trainers and owners would be understanding!
Do you not think, NV, that those eight inches would be better deployed at the climax of the race? ;)

This must really be a good suggestion ! Not only did Zorro say he suggested a female jockey allowance four or five years ago in his column, today in the Racing Post Mr Ashforth claims he suggested it three years ago ! In what looks likes an example of reverse psychology the latter is now against the idea because the females jocks themselves baulk at the idea ! I doubt if the girls will continue to look a gift-horse in the mouth. An allowance is theirs to claim.
Does anybody have an opinion on the present pool of male jocks. Do we really need the most moderate jocks in their forties (who can be relied on to achieve a poor win strike-rate !) keeping out younger talent of both sexes. In fact I suspect that the readiness of the senior male jocks to strike and boycott at will betrays an insecurity in their ranks built in part around their own domination of race-rides. Does somebody much closer to the sport than I have an insight on jockey-room race-ride politics ?
I think it is fair to say that the generation Ian and I belong to have led a very sheltered existence, drowned as we were by the new media of the late 20th century !
I couldn’t possibly comment on whether Ian had more of a Jane Austen upbringing than a Bronte sisters one ;)
Listening to the brilliamt MP3 audio-book version of Jane Eyre, I found the fortune-telling scene an absolute classic piece of story-telling and Jane’s ongoing interior monologues are so powerful you would think that Jane herself was relating the tale to your face. It is a shame if most people first encounter these great works in poor travesties of the original on a "box" or in the obligatory context of a prescribed school curriculum. It is a bigger shame that some of them have passed forty without having read them.:(
The lack of interest in this suggestion by racing folk, be they trainers or TRF members, confirms the male chauvism of the males and self-imposed subjugation of the females.
The lacklustre interest in an allowance by female jockeys and even journalists such as Lydia Hislop today in the Times indicates they would prefer relative anonymity if not irrelevance in racing rather than suffer the indignity of an allowance,
An allowance would simply give the handul of the female jockeys an opportunity to plan and enjoy a career of some longevity in racing.
If the status quo continues we will continue to see the occasional talented female meteor ascend only to disappear into oblivion.
Sadly there are enough quality female jockeys to expand the number of Lady-only races IMO.
Nice to see Steve Dennis put flesh on the bones of this argument in today’s RP (P 16).
It might also be considered that by giving ladies 3lbs (as Dennis advocates) a handlful of quality lady jockeys would be guaranteed in the jockey pool and the necessity of raising weights overall would not be so pressing.
Lady jockies should fight this battle now as the racing authorities are probably not capable of taking on anybody, be they male jockeys, C4, whoever.
3lbs might be a little generous, DL.
1lb might be more proportionate !
And the ladies wouldn’t be so offended !!
Good to hear you’re make progress. More than can be said for me. A weeks break in Paris (trying foi gras for first and last time !) early last month and a sprained ankle last week hasn’t helped.
But having weighed in at the pharmacy today, I am still resolved to lose 1 1/2 stone by October – it should be 2 1/2 !
Beginning now to even wonder whether I can even afford my treats ie a couple of garibaldi biscuits with my cuppa and a humble bottle of guinness come eventide.
Keep up the hard work !

Found myself more TV bound than usual due to sprained ankle so I saw bits of it. It confirmed for me, if I need reminding at all, that I am officially middle-aged !
But who let Peter Kaye on between Robbie and The Who singing Amarillo. How could a nation to that to itself in front of the whole world ?

Don’t overdo it physically or financially !. I won’t keep you to that monkey pledge.
Got on my bike today for first time in two years. Scarey how much leg muscle I’ve lost in that time. Next I need to find a battery for the heart-rate monitor watch and I’ll be away in a hack. On holdiday for next week so won’t be applying myself fully.
Best of luck

I don’t suppose there is any interest in a collective shrinking among "Overounds" for a charity such as Debra.
Something along the lines of losing 10% of body-weight between now and Arc day. Say £10.00 per 1% making a £100.00 pledge/donation. Doing something like this for a charity might concentrate the mind a little more !!!
Just a late night idea….
