Downs and ups of Epsom nearly man
Barry Hills on  Derby entrant Olympian Odyssey in Chris McGrath’s retrospective profile  on the trainer in today’s Independent:
"He has had a very good preparation – touch wood, he hasn’t missed a day all year – and looks magnificent. He does have this wonderfully laid-back attitude. I’m sure he’ll get the trip. He gives himself every chance of doing so, because he’ll always help you, he’s never against you. He’ll be able to get his spot in the race. You never know, he could be the shot."<br> <br>By Chris McGrath <br>Published: 31 May 2006
Noddies Way –  His inclusion thus far is a joke, but it will be a poor one that will reflect badly on the sport if he runs and damages himself or another competitor.

Chris McGrath on the growing pains of George Washington:
"That’s why we ran on Saturday. We had to catch the bull by the horns. We knew it wasn’t his ground, that he would get tired. But he’s never been tired in his life. He needed to be shown a bit of hardship, to be given a reality check. And I hope it will be the making of him."

<br> http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0, … 91,00.html<br> <br> <br>I would like to hear Lydia inform us on the politics of racecourse watering and how much it costs to make ground safe for horses like Estopona so needlessly lost in the Swinton hurdle a few weeks ago. Are the racecourses prepared to spend more water on flat horses than on their poor  jumping relatives ?

Epsom unlikely to be top of the target list for arrogant Washington
Greg Wood<br>Monday May 8, 2006
It was sad to see Estopona’s fate did not receive even a footnote after the race on the BBC, from what I saw anyway. The RP times for these hurdle races confirm the ground was very firm and even a layman could see the horses hated being ridden on it. Estopona seemed to  break his leg because the ground he landed on was simply too firm which leaves one thinking once again if  enough is being done (even basic watering) to make the landing area as safe as possible.
I would think the Swinton Hurdle day is no stranger to these sad fatalities as the ground is invariably fast.
