It was sad to see Estopona’s fate did not receive even a footnote after the race on the BBC, from what I saw anyway. The RP times for these hurdle races confirm the ground was very firm and even a layman could see the horses hated being ridden on it. Estopona seemed to  break his leg because the ground he landed on was simply too firm which leaves one thinking once again if  enough is being done (even basic watering) to make the landing area as safe as possible.
I would think the Swinton Hurdle day is no stranger to these sad fatalities as the ground is invariably fast.

Looks like Lydia ‘s got two columns a week in the Times now. Today’s well- researched piece was on the jockey weight issue.
My solution of importing smaller foreign jocks hasn’t been getting much of an airing from the homegrown groupies ! If half the stable staff are foreign, why shouldn’t half the jocks be !

Alastair seems to trigger off something deep in the English psyche which is something that an Irishman wouldn’t understand. IMO he writes very well when he leaves his ego and his purple ink at home. Today’s little sketch of yesterday at Ludlow is brilliant IMHO.

Far be it from me to suggest that DL may be  behind in his spring-cleaning but  it must be near time that Lydia Hislop’s  generous contribution found itself firmly ensconced in the our Q & A Hall of Fame.

"What exasperates Dettori is not the conservatism of the British racing authorities. He suspects that the most significant resistance instead comes from within the jockeys’ own ranks – from a vocal minority of specialist lightweight riders, who can have three square meals a day and still take any mount."
