"Nouveau Maire was reported as having a breathing problem."

    What an unoriginal an excuse!

The originators of the debate certainly have a point. IMO the trainer/jockey combination think they are being smart but the facts behind the argument are sound.

Murphy should have been warned off following the high profile exposure a few years ago.

There was an amazing shot of Pendil published by the Sporting Life taken at Ascot. He took off outside the wings of a fence in the straight and the shot caught him in mid air. I’m certain Richard Pitman would be able to put you in touch with the photographer. I don’t know who owns the rights to the SL stock library these days but it should be possible to find out.

You could also try racingfotos.com. They can source old images.

I worked as a photographer at the big meetings around that time and clearly remember the Pendil shot, one of the best racing photos ever.

If you own a young horse that has specifically been bred for jump racing the best way to introduce it to racing is in bumpers. Young backward big horses can learn a lot about the racing by having a few runs in bumpers. The aspect of bumpers I don’t understand is having championship races. These end up being very competitive races and are likely to put a young horse off the idea of racing.

I hope Johnson gets the job and hopefully we will be spared his cringing cliches over this side of the pond.

HF wins more money from football betting than horses. His card is marked by an absolute genius (and self made multi millionaire) at football betting I have known for forty years.

Large horses are particularly prone to wind problems as a result of a partially paralysed larynx. This often happens to the nerve on the near side as this nerve does not follow a similar course to the corresponding nerve on the other side. The nerve has an extra loop close to the jaw and this is easily damaged, causing the roar from the larynx during work.

A few years ago I bought a nice big (17.3hh) horse with this condition and was amazed how well he did physically following the surgery. He was in training for a career pointing and doing superbly well until he died from a brain hemorrhage.

Here we go again. Another new name to go on about and when she gets lucky and strings a few winners together she will be a future star before the law of averages kicks in.

The more the marketing people take hold of racing the less interest I take in it. Watched one race from the BC and switched off after hearing a comment about the World Championship of Racing.

International racing is not racing as we know it in the UK. There is only one festival and that takes place in March.

For once I agree with BD. International racing is more about marketing and bloodstock business than racing. Give me a run-of-the-mill meeting at Cheltenham or Kelso any day to what they call racing in the US, Dubai or any other international festival.

If the RP add a bit of functionality they can kill off Raceform Interactive which costs £70 per month for completely outdated DBMS. £7.95 per month could be the biggest bargain in racing.

A lot of questions but I’ll chip in with a starter on breeding. You will soon learn to spot horses that are specifically bred for jumping. Slow maturing types that are often too slow to compete early in their career and develop as 6-y-o’s onwards. You will often see that certain owners and trainers specifically buy this type of "store" and their goal is to produce a winning chaser.

At the other extreme is the former flat racehorse making a progression to jumping as hurdlers. It is fascinating every season to see how these horses progress or not when racing over hurdles. In recent years it has become fashionable to buy expensive high class flat horses for a jumping career. The results are very variable.

Good luck with your learning curve.

Only bookmakers who are part of the SP system on the day and are willing to cooperate with the market manipulation are used by the reps from the firms.

The difference of laying a 1300/800 when 7/4 is offered is clear extra margin for the bookmakers part of the manipulation

This arrangement between the Big 3 firms and there on course bookmaker friends is blatant manipulation and profiteering.

Certain on course bookmakers who are part of the SP system have a nice arrangement with the firms. As BD says a rep asks for 1300/800 about a 7/4 shot and the bookmaker (trader) is happy to oblige, mark down to 6/4 and trade back into the real market online. This type of business goes on every day and is obviously market manipulation by the Big 3.
