Kilbeggan Blade…. hunted round out of the way by GLee, then will take it up after the last…followed in by Rambling minster and Black Apalachi. I hope no-one resorts to using that nasty whip…

Christ almighty people – if it wasn;t for humans using the horse for his own means they would be almost extinct by now…they dont do all the racing malarky for their own good. In the same way that they didn’t plough fields or pull milk carts cause the wanted to…what are you not getting about the fact that the need to be controlled. There are rules in place for the mis-use of the whip……they just need to be properly executed….

    *ahem*

    "
    6. In Hurdle and Steeplechase races the whip may be used down the shoulder in the backhand position, with both hands on the reins when approaching an obstacle, i.e. within four or five strides of take-off."

The above is taken from the hands and heels rules…. and the reason why is that a huge amount of horses would just stop! Now i suggest

    you

stop talking rubbish sir and listen to the lads that do the job for a living. Horses are dumb animals that need to be encouraged to jump, and need to be encouraged to keep going when they would much rather stop.

Ian – it can only be untrue if it has been proven to be untrue….. so…. how many nationals have been run without whips…..None. Even the RSPCA are not against the whip….just in how it is used.
Lets be very clear – if you ban the whip you will be kicking off the end of racing.

How can it be totally untrue? How many nationals have been run without whips? None. Therefore it cannot be totally untrue. I really wish the anti-whip lot were forced to take part in a 4m amateur race at Chelts. If i was Cormack i’d be banning the lot of you….

how many horse would complete the National without the use of a whip? We would still be waiting on Sunday afternoon for the rest of the finishers.
Do you guys really think you get the best out of a horse by whispering "giddy-up" in its ears? Maybe a carrot on a stick? Or a packet of polo mints being dragged by a range rover?

 Try getting a lazy horse round 4m at Hexham in heavy going without using the whip 16 times…. its a bloody stupid rule…..its how the whip is used that should be the issue, not how many times..

[quote="rory" Had the pleasure of working with Tom for about half an hour at the Cheltenham Festival, and while he isn’t likely to prove that much better as a broadcaster that his dad, he is a genuinely nice guy with no shred of arrogance about him. He is also a much improved jockey in recent years and doesn’t deserve the brickbats he occasionally receives. He’s never going to be one of the greats, but he’s ultra reliable which counts for plenty.

There was nothing nice about his attitude when he beat Denman at Kempton….came across as little $hite….and Ruby agreed with that. I agree with the original poster….i find him a poor jockey…but he does damn well with a couple of the stable obv.

No you are not. You are betting on him being pulled up as he is not fit enough to complete. Also i’m pretty sure most bookies are doing this bet. I’d rather have a bet on the mullins boy falling off CV. ANy prices for that?
