Have just seen Skybet are betting on the finishing position of Denman in the Gold Cup.
To bet on a horse being pulled up is in my opinion immoral. You are effectively betting on a horse being injured or distressed.
I am therefore going to boycott Skybet during the Cheltenham Festival and have told them so. I urge others to do the same.
What do you think? Is it immoral?
The more people make their feelings known the better.Mark
Value Is EverythingMarch 6, 2009 at 16:02 #213828No you are not. You are betting on him being pulled up as he is not fit enough to complete. Also i’m pretty sure most bookies are doing this bet. I’d rather have a bet on the mullins boy falling off CV. ANy prices for that?
March 6, 2009 at 16:04 #213831Edited as I didn’t read it properly, sorry Ginge….

If he is not fit enough to complete he should not be running Underscore. Do you really believe connections would run him if not fit enough to do himself justice?
I think there is a distinct possibility of Denman being pulled up through injury or being distressed, but don’t want to bet on it.

Value Is EverythingMarch 6, 2009 at 16:11 #213834It believe is a perfectly valid bet to offer.
If people are unhappy with the "morality" of the bet then they have the option not to bet or to bet elsewhere.
However if people do wish to bet on that outcome what right does anyone have to tell them they cannot have a bet on that outcome.
Indeed by raising this topic are you not, indirectly, actually encouraging others to have the bet you do not like?
I wasn’t aware of this particular bet until seeing your posting but having looked at it I think 3/1 him pulling up is a good price.
March 6, 2009 at 16:19 #213839I voted No. If he pulls up then it’s connections fault.

That is what I am doing.

What right? Because I believe it is immoral.

There is a possibility of that happening. But there is also a possibility of discouraging other bookmakers to bet on it, if they think there is enough punters thinking the same way.

I think it is a very good value bet too Paul, but will not take it.

Value Is EverythingMarch 6, 2009 at 16:25 #213842I wouldn’t bet on a horse to fall, unseat etc. and most firms won’t bet on a negative outcome.
Betting on finishing position 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th to 8th, last etc. there is IMO nothing wrong with that.
They appear to have crossed into a grey area though.
March 6, 2009 at 16:30 #213847I would be inclined to agree with you Ginge, i don’t think there is a need to form a market on such an event, we may as well start forming markets on the least sound jumper to fall shall we not? If people believe there is a chance denman be beaten then there is the LAY facility. Anyone who invests heavily in this bet is clearly an asshole to watch the race and be willing the horse to pull up.
March 6, 2009 at 16:32 #213848I don’t see whats wrong with offering such a bet.
A horse doesn’t have to be injured to pull up anyway. If Denman isn’t "showing sparkle" he could be pulled up.
March 6, 2009 at 16:34 #213849I was annoyed with the betting on Kauto to not complete
when he first won the GC. I suppose that in fact it’s only the same as laying the horse but in my mind it’s morally wrong; as for Denman I wish he wasn’t running, but if he does all I want is for him to come back in one piece [mentally and physically] and I wouldn’t want to make any money on it.
March 6, 2009 at 16:34 #213850Prices have been available for donkeys years for horse to complete/not complete in the National, don’t see a problem with it apart from the overround, what price is he not to pull up? Personally I would sooner have 1/3 not to than 3/1 to pull up.
March 6, 2009 at 16:35 #213851Hi Ginger
So i guess you will boycott all the big bookies on Grand National Day when they offer odds on how many horses will fall?

How the hell is betting on a horse to be pulled up immoral, sorry Ginger im normally with you on most posts but this is crazy. Should a horse be batterd towards the finish when it can hardly jump and run through sheer tiredness, I am sure the saftey of the horse comes first and not to leave any mental/physical scars so pulling it up is the wise option
March 6, 2009 at 16:48 #213854Does anyone know where I can get odds on him to collapse from a reoccurence of his heart problem?
March 6, 2009 at 16:51 #213855Hi Ginger

The difference of the Grand National is betting his jumping is not up to it. Though is it actually falling or completing?
Although I do not like it and would not bet on that market.
This is a market on a horse with heart problems being pulled up. Although he could make a bad mistake and be pulled up; what you are effectively betting on is the problems returning. Nobody would take a price as short as 3/1 without the prospect of the horse being distressed. If they were betting on every horse’s finishing position I’d have less of a problem and would not boycott them.
