Very disappointing from Mrs D today. I definitely couldn’t be backing her again this year, which is a shame as she was great for me last year.
Is there somewhere you can watch French races live, Steve?
You have to pay attention to the money in these Irish juvenile races.
Seems like Caravaggio is definitely heading straight to the French Guineas. It kind of makes me think they don’t rate him too much, although I guess The Gurkha went that route.
You’re clearly a good judge and tipster, Steve, but you are also a little self-aggrandising at times. My guess is this done intentionally to wind people up.
It definitely could be a case of him being too costly – his fee is private but is likely £300k a pop, whereas Walk in the Park is likely under £10k.
Looking through the top of the market I can’t see anything that would worry Churchill unless they improve enormously. War Decree would maybe be of interest if he’s trained on, but that’s a big if and it’s also not certain he’d be sent to Newmarket anyway.
I think I’m going to go to Newmarket for the first time for this meet so I’m a bit disappointed with the current Guineas picture. I’m hoping something really puts in a big performance in the Craven to shake things up a bit.
I’ve taken 180s, 160s and 150s about Barney Roy on Betfair. He’s not actually entered for the Derby yet, but the fact he debuted over a mile and looked to be staying on when winning mean I think he could be a good candidate for this rather than the Guineas.
Well, here’s a turn up for the books! Aidan happy with how Caravaggio worked at Naas the other day, and he goes straight to the Guineas at either Newmarket or Deauville.
Hmm… hard to say if this is reason to be worried or confident about Caravaggio’s progress, but I’d probably lean towards the former. Maybe Steve is right to draw the AFB comparison, as there was similar talk about him being a monster and one of their fastest ever. I definitely couldn’t be having a bet on him if he does show up at Newmarket.
I can see on the RP website that Pricewise has released his 2000 Guineas selection – does someone who has access to their paid stuff mind telling me who he went for? Cheers.
Regarding Carravaggio he could be going for a 7F race at Dundalk in April
Interesting that they’re stepping him up to 7f, but not necessarily indicative that they’ll be sending him to the Guineas as Washington DC won that race last year and has been kept over sprint distances ever since. I’d expect the Aidan is planning a similar route for Caravaggio, with his main targets being the Commonwealth Cup, Nunthorpe, Abbaye, BC Turf Sprint etc.
I’d love for Arrogate to come over to Europe, Steve, but I can’t see his connections wanting to damage his stud value by risking him on turf. He doesn’t seem to have much competition in the US so he likely runs in a couple of the big summer races over there before taking the BC Classic again and being retired.
Jack Hobbs is an exciting contender for the big races in Europe this season where there appears to be a strong group of horses for the top middle distance races.
Sounds likes there’s been a lot of rain, which presumably is going to affect the going. I’d say wait for updates on the ground before making any bets today as ease in the going could significantly alter the chances of some of the main protagonists.
I have very little knowledge of French racing but would be keen to learn (and earn) more.
Saying that, I don’t see them running Caravaggio in the 2000 Guineas, I think they will run Churchill and War Decree, with Cliffs of Moher running in the French Guineas and Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup.
I’d say this is how it likely pans out. I for one hope Caravaggio does train on as he has the potential to be one of the stars of the season.
Yes Steve, i see LB being tried on Dirt and over the trip to see if they are going to The Kentucky Derby or staying at a mile on turf.
Also he is on the plane now with Ryan booked so he must be running.

Seems an odd race to choose as a Guineas prep if they thought they were going to run him at Newmarket. I reckon after the BC they probably only want to run him on super fast ground or dirt.
Some of you may have, understandably, missed an interesting debut from a derby entrant on Friday. Giant’s Treasure won in eye catching fashion in the 6.15 maiden at Wolverhampton (replay on the ATR site).
Now obviously the fact he’s debuted on the all weather on a Friday night is probably a slight concern, however, his breeding and the manner of his victory mean that he looks an interesting horse for later in the year to me.
