It’s early days but it paid to take notice of some early ones last season.
They say history repeats itself and with that in mind it may pay to watch the 1.55 Race at Naas on Sunday.
This is a 5F race and of course the eye is drawn to the O’Brien horses first.
Aidan has three of the eleven runners and in some ways the 475,000 Euro colt Mount Wellington catches the eye first. He is a son of Invincible Spirit and longer term might be the best prospect. However, Ryan Moore is on Sioux Nation and this is a January foal by Scat Daddy out of Dream The Blues (Oasis Dream)
There should be plenty of speed in Souix Nation and as an early foal he could be well forward. We saw the Scat Daddy colt Caravaggio kick off last season in similar circumstances looking fit and fast before later putting the field to the sword in the Coventry.
It is hard to imagine Sioux Nation not going off favourite with the eerie similarities to Caravaggio but I will be interested to see them before the race on Sunday to assess their looks.
This race may just throw up a smart one for this season, so I’ll post the video asap after the race.
1.55 Naas Sunday
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 8, 2017 at 11:12 #1296010I get into 2yo races mate when 6f maidens happen i do but i still be watching the 5f maidens in Ireland
April 9, 2017 at 13:47 #1296230Mount Wellington is out and surprisingly Sebastiano Ricci is quite a tight 2nd Fav after only getting two stars in the Timeform preview.
I reinvested some One For Arthur winnings into Sioux Nation at 7/4. Ryan can’t get another one wrong surely?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 9, 2017 at 13:54 #1296231T For Tango was 18/1 last night and is now 9/2. Trainer isn’t exactly one of the powerhouses in Ireland but the dam is out a mare who won by 7 lengths on debut (as a 3 year-old). That mare also produced Rahiyah who was 2nd in the 2006 Rockfel. He could give Sioux Nation & Sebastiano Ricci something to worry about.
April 9, 2017 at 14:14 #1296232You have to pay attention to the money in these Irish juvenile races.
April 9, 2017 at 15:56 #1296246Sioux Nation was bigger than the others in stature.
Has another entry on the 12th at Dundalk so could be out again soon.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 9, 2017 at 16:06 #1296249Yes the money for T For Tango proved well placed. Mind you the connections must have been on oxygen in the closing stages.
I always feel that there is more chance of the little guys putting it up to the bigger stables in the 5F races, where speed and precocity can overcome the better bred horses. As they step up to 6F and beyond the cream tends to rise to the top and the early season sorts often fade into memory.
Looking at Sioux Nation today he seemed like he would come on a ton for this outing. He’s a decent specimen and he showed good enough pace early. He seemed just to tire as much as anything today. He was easy enough to back at 2/1 but did better than stablemate Sebastiano Ricci, who was better backed, into 9/4, but never really got involved. I would probably have backed Mount Wellington to be honest but he was pulled out.
You would tend to think Sioux Nation would be a shoo-in for a maiden next time. He could progress past those who finished ahead of him today, as plenty of Aidan’s 2yo horses need their first run, eg Gleneagles, Churchill etc
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 21, 2017 at 00:06 #1297584Hopefully momentum will build in this field shortly.
There is an interesting 2yo race at Newbury tomorrow, with some likely sorts in the 2.00 Race, where 11 Colts line up over 5F.
Richard Hannon’s Embour is a narrow favourite in the early flush of betting and he was relatively expensive as a £145,000 son of Acclamation. This is a full brother to Cake, who was a speedy sort for the Hannon’s about 10 years ago.
Just behind in the current betting is Gold Town, Godolphin’s son of Street Cry. Sound And Silence won for Charlie Appleby earlier in the week and I feel this colt may just go off favourite. He’s a month older than the Hannon colt.
Qaaraat is another Acclamation colt, this time he’s a £200,000 buy and he’s trained by Ed Dunlop. Jim Crowley is on board and Ed is 3/9 this past fortnight. Global Applause was a decent early speedster for Ed last season, so February foal Qaaraat is worth keeping an eye on. The Ed Dunlop’s are sometimes backed so 13/2 for this fellow may look big in retrospect.
Headway sits about the same odds as the Dunlop horse for trainer William Haggas, relatively cheap by some of Haggas’ inmates at 60 grand, he is a son of Havana Gold who will no doubt have some supporters here.Spoof is a January foal from the Charlie Hills yard. Charlie Hills has saddled a 2yo winner already this season and this son of Poet’s Voice has Jamie Spencer on board.
Admiral Spice has a fair bit of variation in his odds, from 8/1 out to 14/1 for Tom Dascombe. Formidable Kitt was a 2yo winner for the yard but generally the trainer has been lurching along on 1/18 this past two weeks. He’s by Lethal Force.
Tony Soprano is a name I love and Martyn Meade’s newcomer is well named, also being by Lethal Force. If anyone hasn’t seen The Soprano’s, mafia boss Tony Soprano was fairly au fait with the notion of lethal force to solve problems. Not so much a Fairy Godmother as a Sweary Godfather. Not especially fancied at 16/1 here but he cost 50 grand and we have to hope he doesn’t need Gelded some day, or the the horse will have to say “Hey Marty, you’re busting my balls here”
Jim Rockford is the other horse in the race named after a TV show character. Never a big fan of the soporific Rockford Files myself, it has to be hoped that the horse moves at a faster pace than the TV series. Whether the horse will “Garner” some support from the Ralph Beckett fans remains to be seen.
Motown Mick looks the Hannon second string based on Ryan Moore being on Embour and the market very much reflects that sentiment as he sits on 20/1 here. A son of Intikhab he seems fairly friendless here.
Another Havana Gold colt runs in the form of Mysaan for Brian Meehan. The stable landed this a couple of years ago but times have been pretty lean for the yard in recent times.
The line up is completed by the Evans colt Owen The Law. The trainer is no stranger to speedy youngsters but this son of Equiano is rank outsider at 28/1 in this race.
Probably a suicide mission betting anything other than one pound on this race, so I’ll put the Caution quid on Qaaraat at 13/2.
Maybe if Tony Soprano doesn’t win, several people will be getting “Whacked” over the weekend by Pussy and Paulie Walnuts.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 21, 2017 at 00:21 #1297585Nice write up on a tricky 2yo race Steve
Did you read Richard Hannon’s Stable Tour in the Racing Post on Tuesday he says Embour is very forward, shown plenty of speed and might be an Ascot type. Think I might chance a small bet on him tomorrow at around 2/1.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 21, 2017 at 10:04 #1297611Sorry this isn’t a two year old tip but listening to Kieran Fallon yesterday on itv at one point he said that the queen would have a winner at newbury on saturday.
looking through the card she only has two runners, Call to mind (who is a full brother to the smart recorder) and Musical terms, who is in the weaker division
I think I’ll back both although maybe he meant Queens logic in the fred darling?

Keiren said Brando was a dodgy bet yesterday because of the ground. The horse duly sluiced home cosily. The ITV team were all over War Decree like a rash and it ran like a drain. I pay little heed to them myself.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

JacI didn’t read the stable tour Jac. Embour is very weak today though. He is out to 9/2.
Gold Town is generally steady but Spoof and my horse Qaaraat are the best backed so far.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 21, 2017 at 13:26 #1297635Aye, the only reason I mentioned it was because Fallon might have some sort of inside info. Have backed those two Queen runners anyway.
Hayley Turner seems particularly clueless as a pundit, she said Rivet looked amazing in the paddock yesterday, when he clearly had sweated up a little. She then went on to tip War Decree, presumably because it was favourite. She’s from the Mike Cattermole/Mick Fitzgerald school of just mindlessly tipping up every short priced jolly.
April 21, 2017 at 14:06 #1297637Agree Steve and judge..Jockeys really are the worst tipsters.

Can’t believe what Kieren Fallon said about Brando yesterday when he had pole position in the paddock to assess the horse and it was obvious to all who saw Brando parading that he looked like he could eat the field for breakfast, the fact he seemed more fascinated playing around with his tongue while parading might have put a few off but Kieren did a pretty good job demolition job himself.
Hope that yesterday was just a one off and Fallon is not the new McCoy for ITV for the flat season.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 21, 2017 at 15:34 #1297645In the end money talked and Gold Town won as 10/3 Fav for Godolphin.
Embour and Qaaraat had good early speed but Dunlop’s colt weakened slightly under pretty tender handling. Hannon’s colt kept on OK but was reeled in by the Goldolphin horse and Headway, who made good headway.
I felt Headway did really well, he was a bit nearer the back and looked the greenest of those who took a hand in the finish.
The ATR report says Gold Town won readily. There was only a neck in it and I felt Headway might be the one to take from the race. Embour should improve as well.
If I were Ed Dunlop I would be looking to Chester for his horse and the opportunity to blaze at a sharp track.
Looking at them going down I thought Headway was a fluent mover and I would be highly surprised if he was beaten in a maiden next time out.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 22, 2017 at 22:42 #1297934I have been waiting to see where Wesley Ward heads to with 4 and a half furlong winning Filly Fairyland.
I got a good early return from Lady Aurelia last year and Fairyland is a daughter of Scat Daddy.
Fairyland broke quite well in the race at Keeneland and it didn’t take her too long to get the lead. Up against colts, she was 7/5 Fav on the day and that looked good early doors. Unlike Lady Aurelia, who blitzed all the way, Fairyland didn’t take off that hard at the front. Turning in, a couple were within striking distance, but when the jockey gave her a couple of waves of the stick and a smack, she came away from them on the run in to win by 3 and a quarter lengths.
Her time was nowhere near as fast as Lady Aurelia but I don’t think she was flat out all the way as her predecessor was last season. At the end of the day she has the pace to win at 4 and a half furlongs and she’s a big filly, who will probably be the winner is racing’s easiest game ie Spot the Wesley Ward filly in the Queen Mary field.
Ward was quoted as saying that the owners Coolmore will tell him if she goes Queen Mary or Albany. I would have though the Queen Mary was the obvious next step myself. With that in mind I have backed her for the Queen Mary at 8/1.
It seems predictable that if Fairyland turns up, she will tower over her opponents and people will be reaching for their dictionaries to see if Deja Vu means what they think it does.
You can watch her race here:-

Is there a faster filly in the UK or France. I am betting that there isn’t and Fairyland seems to have Kim Kardashian proportioned hips.
Queen Mary Royal Ascot Fairyland 8/1
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
