Thunder Snow did it
, Merci Christoph
!
His odds got bigger and bigger, and I bet him to early, but that’s a minor matter..March 25, 2017 at 13:45 #1294100Did he stumble or change legs…? I didn’t think he wanted to go past or am I being harsh on the horse
I am not sure about that Nathan, but I wouldn’t say so.
This Epicharis was a really tough nut, but Christophe made the difference and finally cracked him!March 25, 2017 at 13:48 #1294101Yeah perhaps I’m not giving the runner up enough credit, he dug in well
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
March 25, 2017 at 14:09 #1294106This was not Limato’s cup of tee.
I think Candy should select his races more carefully.March 25, 2017 at 14:10 #1294107Just watched the 2.00 on the link botchy, very crisp camera work.
Limato was disappointing, I won the match bet with him and ErtijaalGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
March 25, 2017 at 14:16 #1294109Henry Candy probably can’t believe his poor luck. He has a horse who needs lightning quick ground so he sends it to race in a desert and what happens? It rains and rains and the ground comes up soft. Unsurprisingly the winner has won a Listed & Grp 3 race back in France on soft ground just last year.
I don’t think the ground will stop Ribchester mind.

His odds got bigger and bigger, and I bet him to early, but that’s a minor matter..As I said over on the 2000 Guineas thread, I was all over Thunder Snow for this. I was afraid of the foreign raiders because I found their form hard to evaluate but the bigger odds Thunder Snow got, the more I decided to sneak a few more quid on. I was walking past my local bookies this morning and popped in for another bet on him.
It was hairy in the end. Thunder Snow broke really well and negated his bad draw to a good extent. He travelled really well and at one stage I thought he would win with a bit to spare but the other horse wasn’t for stopping. I am not sure whether Thunder Snow took a false step or just spooked but he wandered a bit, thankfully he finished well enough to do a “Might Bite” and get there on the line.
Lancaster Bomber was under the push from a long way out. To give him his due he kept on well and looked like taking third but he faded in the closing stages. He just never travelled that well really. Hard to know what they will do with him next. The Kentucky Derby looks unlikely on this evidence.
I backed Jack Hobbs at 9/2 last night and that bet is safely paid for now.
I just feel Postponed is too short after disappointing last time, I am not sure how strong the form really is and he was a huge disappointment in the Arc last year. Highland Reel doesn’t win often enough for my liking and I just feel that Jack Hobbs must go close on his effort behind Almanzor and Found in the Champion Stakes and he remains lightly raced. Obviously fitness needs to be taken on trust but with Postponed a little question mark after his last run and Highland Reel disappointing in this last year, I will stick with Jack Hobbs.
Surprisingly for me, Timeform don’t have Jack Hobbs in their 1-2-3 preview but they didn’t have Thunder Snow in there either and it didn’t stop him. Prize Money gets the nod for 3rd from them, perhaps the injury problems put them off the Gosden runner.
Anyway it’s encouraging for me that Jack Hobbs has been backed in from the 9/2 last night. 7/2 is the best available for now.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

So pleased that Thunder Snow got home, sounded a bit hairy from what Nathan and Steve said but he did it
Well done to everyone who backed him and good luck with the rest of the card…Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 25, 2017 at 16:12 #1294130I will stick with Jack Hobbs.
I must admit I stepped on your train, Steve.
Thank you so much, your analysis is real master class
March 25, 2017 at 16:18 #1294132Jack Hobbs you monster! Finally a result to pull me back level on a difficult afternoon’s punting with plenty of near-misses (Beautiful Romance, Epichuris, Morawij, Ribchester).

Thanks for the kind words. We all have good days and bad days. Today was a very good day for me. I also had Mind Your Biscuits in the sprint and am waiting for Ginger Nuts in the Australian Derby next week for a “Biscuit Double”
I have backed Jack Hobbs at 14/1 for the Arc De Triomphe. Ladbrokes and others are offering those odds and they look worth a punt to me. I can’t see better value in the race at the moment. It is early days, but Highland Reel ran in today’s race last year and went close in the Arc. Jean-Claude Rouget has the 1-2 in the Arc betting but neither Almanzor nor La Cressonniere have won at a mile and a half, whereas Jack Hobbs has.
Jack Hobbs was magnificent looking before today’s race and he was more than that in it, as he thrashed the field. It shows you how good Golden Horn was in winning the Derby from Jack Hobbs. Trainer John Gosden stated that the “half blinkers” his horse wore today seemed to help him keep his mind on the job.
Anyway, I am having a little vodka tonight to celebrate a rare 3/3 at the World Cup meeting. Cheers!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 25, 2017 at 17:15 #1294146Arrogate : what a horse , what a performance !

The best I’ve seen since Frankel .

Hard to weigh it up as a performance. The trainer seemed to think the horse had blown it at the start but such was his superiority over his opponents coming in and the muddy conditions, I felt he still held every chance. In the end, you could see from a long way out that he was the only horse in the field who was travelling.
A great performance from where he came but I felt the media hype was a bit over the top in the aftermath. This Dubai World Cup leaves me a bit cold as a platform for great horses.
Stan James put him into the Arc betting at 16/1. They are the only firm to quote him so far but I am not tempted by that. I doubt if he will run in that race and Stan James are “at it” in my view.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 26, 2017 at 10:02 #1294190I’d love for Arrogate to come over to Europe, Steve, but I can’t see his connections wanting to damage his stud value by risking him on turf. He doesn’t seem to have much competition in the US so he likely runs in a couple of the big summer races over there before taking the BC Classic again and being retired.
Jack Hobbs is an exciting contender for the big races in Europe this season where there appears to be a strong group of horses for the top middle distance races.

It would be great to see it but I doubt they will take the chance. Generally I oppose the dirt horses running on turf if they do come over. I also tend to oppose those who run in foreign lands on generally concrete like turf.
I remember Able Friend coming over to Royal Ascot from Hong Kong and a Racing journalist predicting that he would send Solow back to France with his tail between his legs. I backed Solow ante-post for that race and laid Able Friend. It was the Hong Kong horse who went back home with his tail tucked in and I don’t think he ever won again, other than a 6F sprint. Perhaps that experience, where he looked like a fish out of water at the Royal meeting left some scars.
Arrogate is going to be tough to beat for sure but I don’t think he has much in terms of opposition at the moment , which means he’ll probably keep trousering the cash.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 27, 2017 at 00:52 #1294264I think both Animal Kingdom and California Chrome doing poorly in their Ascot adventures (in CC’s case, not even getting to the starting gate) probably wards off any ideas along that line. Baffert will point him to the Pacific Classic and Breeders Cup with perhaps the Gold Cup at Santa Anita on the radar as well.
