What an admirable horse!
Aidan – backing Sky’s The Limit at Cheltenham was based solely on what I saw in a gallop after racing at one of the Irish tracks where he galloped all over one of the fancied novices. Haven’t backed him since, but would have expected him to take high order as a novice chaser this term. Also, didn’t The Rooster win the Champion on the back of winning the County Hurdle?
Just goes to show how fences are the making of some horses whereas they may not suit others.
Have only seen the race twice and it’s a tricky one to weigh up. Good ‘stepping up’ performance from Iktitaf, who had race fitness on his side.
Very good to see Asian Maze running so well after her disappointment in France end last term. Still think she’s more of a staying type rather than a Champion Hurdler, but might well be proven wrong in the long term.
Disagree with DJ and FSL regarding Newmill’s performance. He was never here to win this race and I thought he ran well for a long way and then the jockey patently gave up on him and let him jog home. There’ll be much better to come when he goes for his real tragets.
Think I’d have expected a bit more from the Champion Hurlder Brave Inca, but connections seem to be satisfied enough with the run, given it was first time out, McCoy wasn’t in the driving seat, the ground was terrible and the real target lies in March.
So, we only really have Macs Joy to play his hand in Ireland, and maybe Straw Bear in England before we can start to form opinions about the Champion Hurdle pecking order.
I’m in the Detroit City camp so far…but I’ve been known to switch allegiances in the past.
On a different note, having made a lot of money backing Sky’s The Limit at Cheltenham, have been disappointed to see him run poorly over fences thus far.
Kauto impressive today!
Jumped well and won with plenty in hand. Looks like being a great King George if that performance hasn’t scared away the opposition.
I’d have thought Nicholls would now let Star De Mohaison take his chance in the Hennessy now he has a gilt edged opportunity of picking up the King George with Kauto Star (or is that just my ten to follow head talking)?
I was impressed – he just keeps on winning.
It was visually impressive, and I realise that this can sometimes be deceiving, but I like to believe what I see with my own eyes, as it’s served me well betting wise in the past. He seems relatively straight forward, and has a high cruising speed that he can maintain. Connections feel he stays a trip too, which is a good thing for the Champion Hurdle (as Istabraq / Hardy Eustace have shown).
He seems nailed on for a place at least for me on that performance. Some of his other rivals have questions to answer – Macs Joy may prefer a less stiff track, Harchibald is anything but simple, Desert Quest has quirks (but is undoubtedly talented).
Will be fascinating to see how he acquits himself in the Bula in December, against a better class of opposition. Great to see a worthy replacement for the great Roooster Booster coming along!
We (JOCI Club) have gone mainly with the tried and trusted approach of horses rated 160+ and a smattering of promising novices, but like Grasshopper, we’ve stuck to class performers and the novices are few and far between.
We have our first & only runner tomorrow in the shape of Standin Obligation. I think this horse could rack up some decent points this year. A few years ago we finished pretty high on the leaderboard, and one of the horses that differentated us that year was Pipe’s Tarxien, who had shown good form over hurdles the previous season, but was relatively untouted, and less favoured than other more hyped up novices. Standin Obligation reminds me of Tarxien and I just hope he can show us what a good horse he could be tomorrow.
Good luck (but not too much) to all!

Deano – the year before your success, we (JOCI Club)were robbed of a top 10 finish, when The Rooster was agonisingly collared by Sacundai on the line at Aintree, after Richard Johnson dropped the whip after the last. Would have finished around 7th had the Rooster won, but had to settle for 13th in the end, just out of the money.
There’s always this year…and Grasshopper is seemingly the man to follow, after Redemption’s success

50 points for the Irish Hennessy (the BoS benefit race) will be sufficient for the old boy this year
Hang on for a sec…whilst I agree this is frustrating and we’d all like to see the best chasers taking each other on, she has an obligation to do (what she believes to be) the best for the horse, and the connections. And let’s not forget that not many trainers have trained a triple Gold Cup winner!
Just drop the ‘L’
Best book of the year so far for me has been Neil Asher’s ‘Line Of Polity’, and excellent sci-fi tale with great plot, memorable characters and a host of very grisly scenes…give it a try if you like the genre (and even if you want to try something new). The other book I’ve read of his is called Gridlinked, which is also very good. They have many of the same characters in the books, and Gridlinked is the first in the sequence.
Ah well, lost out on that one, but recovered losses this afternoon and moved into small profit for the tournament by backing Holland to win half time / full time.
Have the same bet on Mexico versus Iran later today, so here’s hoping.
Very sorry to hear about your terrible news.

I’ll be rooting for Alexandrova, for Ten To Follow purposes, as victory for her would propel a few of our lists close to the leaderboard. Speciaosda would be a disaster!
Italy looked pretty ordinary against Switzerland. I hope they can create many more chances in the World Cup or my bet on Luca Toni can be consigned to the wastebin!
Encouraging for me to see Lukas Podolski bagging a brace in the recent friendly (admittedly against limited opposition in the shape of Luxembourg). In particular, he netted from the spot, and with Germany playing in front of a partisan crowd, with lots of pressure on the refs, there might be a penalty or two coming their way.
Those mentioning Pauleta will also be pleased as he notched up a hat-trick, but again against even more limited opposition.
