This isn’t going to help the BBC’s relations with the Tory Party ……. we know how much they love a bet
One annoying race commentary term ……. Aussie Jim maybe?
The horse who ‘jumps from fence to fence’
er, just think about that !
I wonder if they could have a system of ‘win and you’re in’ for the various regional Nationals like the Midlands National
Pick the top half dozen of these regional Nationals based on class/prize money and give a guaranteed entry option for the Grand National ?
I suppose the downside could be that Mullins, Elliot etc send their horses over for the qualifying races. Not sure how you could get around that. I guess it could also mean horses miles out of the handicap getting a run at Aintree although if the qualifying races were of a decent enough level maybe they’d attract horses with a high enough rating
I’m increasingly finding the whole Cheltenham Festival a bit boring now
At one time I would have been glued to the TV all afternoon having watched the morning ‘build-up’ but now I don’t watch or listen to any of the hundreds of previews on TV, radio or YouTube, I turn it off between races and even skip most of the handicaps and only make a point of watching the Championship races, maybe some of the Grade One Novices
The hype has killed it
Glad it’s over and we can get back to 5 and 6 runner handicaps at Fakenham and Ffos Las where you have a pretty decent chance of finding a few winners….. you can keep your Willie Mullins odds on shots and 20 runner handicaps. I can’t remember the last time I bet on a race at the Festival, but it’s years ago
Without getting too political I reckon 95% of trainers, owners and jockeys vote Tory ……. yet they don’t seem able or willing to put pressure on to change the policy which those self same owners, trainers and jockeys say will harm the sport
They should be organising campaigns to unseat the Tory MPs who represent the racing and training centres
Threaten to put up Pro-Racing Independent candidates in Newmarket, Lambourn, Middleham etc
“I don’t know, but he was so excited about the 8/11 fav Ballyrashane winning the 4-runner chase I thought it was a Championship race”
What a shocking race that was ……. every one of them should be a 33/1 shot ……. stick a pin in for a favourite
I thought the second would win ……..

From a personal point of view and with no regard to racecourse attendances or the future viability of the sport I quite like to see a card of 5 and 6 runner races
As an OAP who doesn’t get out much I like to pick half a dozen horses to watch during the afternoon and if I bet on them it’s small stakes doubles and trebles
If I’m looking at tomorrow’s cards and see one full of double figure fields I just skip it and move on …… life’s too short to be spending hours looking at 80/90 runners on a card
obviously that’s a personal take on matters !
And also when the ‘traditional’ sponsor name disappears the race itself seems to sink into relative obscurity
perfect example …… The Hennessey
the race is still being run but it seems like it’s now just another handicap on a Saturday
On a tangent …….
Seeing the Park Drive pack reminds me that as a young teen up North in the 60s one of our back street shops would sell single Park Drive ciggies to lads like me, aged 14 and probably looked 12
‘Number 6’ were the other ciggies of choice for youngsters !
of course a lot of races were sponsored by cigarette and tobacco companies and booze
I assume that’s not allowed now ?
I don’t buy into the Irish/UK thing to be honest ……. I don’t care where the horses are trained
They’ve all got 4 legs and a jockey ……. it’s a fair playing field.
Why would it bother me if they’re trained 200 miles from my house or 500 miles from my house …… they’re just names on a race card with associated form.
If the Irish happen to have the best horses then we want them taking part in the big races whether here or in Ireland
It’s all a marketing ploy to whip up more betting and enthusiasm
I cancelled RTV a few days ago
You can watch the UK races live on the Racing Post site and I’m not interested in all the waffle between races
You can also watch replays on the Life site pretty quickly after the race finishes
It’s a long time since I’ve put RTV on and just left it on for the afternoon or evening.
Do they all loops on the course ?
I was a latecomer and didn’t have my first bet until I was about 30
still, that’s nearly 40 years ago !
It was a weekend meet up of old college mates with various sporting events lined up ….. football on Saturday, snooker club Saturday night, par 3 Golf on Sunday …… and someone suggested betting on the early TV races before going to the match
One of the lads had bet before but the only bet he knew was a ‘patent’ …. so we all did a patent on races at Newcastle. I had a couple of winners . I think one was called Milk Heart and the other might have been something like Tommy Gee. I gradually became hooked having had no interest in racing for the first 30 years of my life. The first Derby I watched was Slip Anchor so I reckon my first bet was probably during the preceding winter
It would be better if they just showed one race and announced that the other race would be shown in full in a few minutes time when this one finishes
People might say that’s not ideal for people betting in running ….. but then do people really bet in running on TV coverage which has a built in delay ?
…………. and here comes the Jolly !
as the favourite overtakes a couple of tailed off horses and runs into 6th place
Yeah, I only use the desktop site as I don’t have a mobile phone
so maybe these features are not available on the site which is designed for mobile devices ?
I’ve tried to post this about 5 times ……… one more go then I’m giving up
