Do any of those email you when the horse is entered, rather than just when it’s declared. That’s what I’d be more interested in…

Well it would be very strange if George Strawbridge didn’t win either of the Guineas, and even harder for him to swallow, I’d imagine. I wonder what offers were made for Serious Attitude during the winter from the ‘big boys’. Maybe a bit of a Speciosa story coming on…

Atouchbetweenacara will be aimed at the Paddy Power next season, Stilvi. Could be an interesting season for Venetia Williams – the strength of her ‘squad’ seems to be improving all the time.

Here’s my slant on ownership. My family have owned horses for many years, with several trainers, but only recently found success. In this case, the trainer and his wife are the ones who decide where to run the horse(s), and then discuss with the owners what they think to running here on this day, or here on this day. The trainer then decides to declare the horse in which race they prefer, and with whichever jockey on board they prefer, unless the owner states they don’t want to run there, or they don’t want that jockey. Overall, the owners have little say, as after-all, that’s the trainers job, but they are kept well informed, and if there’s something they don’t like they can freely object. My family are and have been one of the bigger owners in the yard in recent years, and are also very, very good friends with the trainer, so therefore phone calls are almost daily. However, for the smallest owners, who aren’t as friendly with the trainer on such a social basis, I’d guess that phone calls to keep them informed are every 3 days, roughly.

Same here. I backed Native Ruler and On Our Way and was a bit gutted when neither won.

Hivikos this season. After all the hype, all the news of him working so well, I had to back him this season. He’s yet to win

In fairness John Fretwell seems to fall out with everyone. His previous trainer was Derek Shaw and how anyone could fall out with Derek is a mystery to me.

Yes, but he’s a big gambler, and when these gambles don’t quite come off, the pressure will be on the trainer.

Any inclination who the new trainer might be, Carvillshill, if anyone?

I am a believer that the best horses should run against the best horses, rather than this avoiding each other all season shi’ite. Why shouldn’t Rainbow View go one-on-one with Fantasia several times this season in the same way Henrythenavigator and Raven’s Pass did so many times last year. Rainbow View might win the first three and then Fantasia comes back at the end of the season, just like Raven’s Pass did, or vice-versa. I don’t like all this avoid each other, like we see in Jumps Racing. There’s one thing I’m sure about…Fantasia would be a certain for the Guineas if Strawbridge hadn’t purchased her. I still think she will go for the Guineas, or maybe that’s just hopeful!

His main owner, John Fretwell, had a fall out with him last year, I believe. That’s the reason behind Fretwell moving all of his horses from the yard and spreading them out between Ed McMahon (a trainer he’s used for years anyway), Peter Chapple-Hyam, Clive Cox and Kevin Ryan. Despite this big loss in horses, O’Neill remained competitive and still appeared to have plenty of horses. Fretwell owned O’Neill’s yard in Nottinghamshire, so it was surprising he remained there in the first place. It will be interesting to see if Fretwell replaced O’Neill, and puts a new trainer at his yard, and if he moves his horses back there, or keeps them more spread out.

Never been a fan of his, mainly because he was an owner with Michael Chapman, but read his column from time to time and it was relatively interesting and amusing. Any death is sad, so RIP Sir Clement!

That’s fascinating stuff – I would never think of John Dunlop to be at the top. Then again, he seems to be a trainer who’s really gone off the radar, as such, in the last few years. It would be great to see him have some big winners this year, although I have no idea what he has in, in the way of good horses.

Isn’t Vico owned by Nicholls’ sponsor, Mark Tinknell, or am I thinking or another animal?

The grey Glass Harmonium may not be Stoute’s main guineas hope but he is a cracking horse.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that went down more of the St. Leger route. A nice horse, for sure.

I’ve heard and read some good vibes about Native Ruler of Cecil’s. A very well bred animal, whose mother won an Oaks and he’s full brother to Sixties Icon. Makes his debut on Wednesday.

Also, that horse of Noseda’s (owned by Paul Roy) that won at Kempton yesterday looks a bit of a tool. Forgotten Voice it’s called. Another one to follow.

    Thanks for the welcome, Mark!

I guess it depends on the owner really. Some owners will prefer to sit back and let the trainer do the work, as they have other things to concentrate on, such as business interests. Whereas other owners will be hands on, probably the more gambling type, who will want to land a bit of a gamble with their horse, maybe, and will therefore want to plan a sequence of races for the animal.
I would suggest that a lot of owners are a mix between the two extremes. A trainer will come to an owner and say "What do you think of running him here, then here and then onto here" or an owner will say to the trainer "I notice there’s a race at so and so next weekend, why don’t we try that?"

I would like to nominate Palace Moon. I was there when it won at Doncaster, in what looked a competitive handicap and it routed the field, winning easily by 5L. Looks sure to be a very nice horse this year, and is from a very good family, being related to the likes of Sakhee’s Secret. I was stood close to the Winners’ Enclosure when the horse came back in, and heard Steve Drowne telling the lad who was there (presumably Hughie Morrison’s Travelling Head Lad or something) that this horse will be a serious horse.
