I was wondering if anyone of the fine patrons of this board armed with the appropriate software could post a list of trainers that do particularly well or badly with horses returning after a spell of 100 days or more off the track.
If not, which software would be best to use for producing such a list.
ThanksApril 16, 2009 at 01:45 #222069Adrian Massey’s database should give you the info you need with a database going back to 2004
It’s slow work though and won’t give you a breakdown of each trainers runners but it’s free and it works.
April 16, 2009 at 03:12 #222082I would say keep an eye out for Sir MIchael Stoute, his record at the start of the season bringing horses back from a break is probably the most profitable time to follow him
April 16, 2009 at 04:05 #222090Thanks a lot, knew I would get help from this forum.
April 16, 2009 at 13:19 #222140Funnily enough I did some research on this exact topic, right down to the 100-day specification, just over a year ago for atr. Obviously bear in mind this information is a year out of date as it was carried out in January 2008 but it does highlight ten trainers with excellent records in this sphere from 2000-2007 inclusive.
April 16, 2009 at 13:36 #222141Thanks, Hugh.
I think it’s Sean rather than Scott Lycett.

April 16, 2009 at 13:39 #222142You’re absolutely right of course, Colin, not sure why I put Scott.

April 16, 2009 at 16:37 #222170Nice one Cav – interesting to see how the P/L figures in that list reinforce so many prejudices.
Hannon, the Easterbys, Dandy Nicholls avoid at all costs, Hughie Morrison a master of the first time out winner.
April 16, 2009 at 16:46 #222172I ran a query using the Adrian Massey site for the period 2004-2008 using the following criteria:
Horses are running on turf this time out and last run was at least 91 days ago (last run could have been on AW)
The results don’t give a breakdown for any trainer who hasn’t had at least 10 runners who meet the criteria.
Only 1 trainer has shown a LSP in EVERY year from 2004-2008
And that man is Henry Cecil!
Every single other trainer with at least 10 runners has shown a loss in at least one year between 2004 – 2008
Taking the 10 trainers Hugh highlighted in his article, some of the results for 2008 are quite scary (all to level-stakes):
Michael Stoute – loss of 26.34pts
Michael Harvis – profit of 15.61pts
John Gosden – loss of 1.12pts
Mark Johnston – loss of 32.37pts
Barry Hills – loss of 23.31pts
Richard Fahey – loss of 42.62pts
William Haggas – loss of 3.50pts
Henry Candy – profit of 19.24pts
Hughie Morrison – profit of 9.38pts
Ralph Beckett – loss of 5.99ptsHopefully I’ve gotten the stats right there!
Obviously you can take a long-term view with this and indeed there is no guarantee that Henry Cecil will show a LSP in 2009 but it’s worth considering before anyone dives in (as I used to do in my younger days before I decided to do a bit of research myself)!
April 17, 2009 at 00:33 #222238That’s fascinating stuff – I would never think of John Dunlop to be at the top. Then again, he seems to be a trainer who’s really gone off the radar, as such, in the last few years. It would be great to see him have some big winners this year, although I have no idea what he has in, in the way of good horses.

I seem to remember from my Uni days (Statistics course) that in any meaningful study of random figures (such as this) you should remove what is none as "outliers" – outcomes that go against all the other outcomes.
In this case I refer to long and short priced winners. To make these figures more useful you’d really have to remove say the 5 longest and 5 shortest priced winners for each trainer and re-run the figures (I am not offering by the way, lol). I am guessing you might get a far different set of results. This helps to remove those random 33-1, 40-1, 100-1 winners that are invariable skewing the figures a bit.
April 17, 2009 at 19:45 #222335I ran a query using the Adrian Massey site for the period 2004-2008 using the following criteria:
Horses are running on turf this time out and last run was at least 91 days ago (last run could have been on AW)
Only 1 trainer has shown a LSP in EVERY year from 2004-2008
And that man is Henry Cecil!
Just to put my money where my mouth is – I backed Cecil’s 3 runners who were returning to the track after breaks of > 90 days – none were placed. Of course he did have a 14/1 winner with 3yo colt having it’s racecourse debut, which needless to say, went unbacked by me!
April 17, 2009 at 23:33 #222368Same here. I backed Native Ruler and On Our Way and was a bit gutted when neither won.
