This is why there really is no alternative to Betfair

just the 1st market I looked at at 9.19 am today

    1st Test match

    the draw
    betfair £3,868.00 availbale at 1.62
    betdaq £1,234.00 ‘ 1.62
    wbx £ 55.00 ‘ 1.62

So if you are strong on the draw and want any decent bet where does one go to?

I have paid the Premium charge on a number of occasions which is hardly worth mentioning compared to what others pay but I would rather pay that than lose to someone else.

I think it would be fair if they based the Premium charges over a 3 month period but they would take less money overall so that will never happen.

In his book Patrick Veitch who is clearly an exceptional gambler calculates he made 16.7% on turnover over recent years despite having to take under the rates in order to get enough money on.

He talks of Harry Findlay quoted as stating no punter on the Earth makes 8% on turnover.

Patrick Veitch from his book hardly uses the exchanges to maximise his profit but he has agents and sub agents placed around the counry to get his money on. Without resorting to those means there is no real alternative.

I agree the whole thing is a con and a bit like charging a drinker more because he drinks in your pub every day and therefore contributes more to your business than a once a year drinker.

Yesterday the Dikler in the Post reported that Spencer got pulled over by the cops as he looked like an under aged joyrider.

Spenecr insisted he was actually ‘ a top jockey’ the cop told Spencer he liked a bet and then asked for his name when he was told it was Jamie Spencer the cop apparently told him

‘Jamie Spencer! You’ve cost me a fortune! Here’s three points’

According to someone who knows Ryan Moore very well he was approached by reps from Coolmore during the time Sir Michael Stoute was undecided as to who was going to be his stable jockey.

Once Sir M. Stoute leaned of this he quickly made his mind up to get Ryan to sign up on the dotted line.

Moore is happilly settled down in Suffolk with his partner and 1 year old son Toby so even if he lost the Stoute job I doubt if moving to Ireland would interest him much.

As for Frankie moving to Ireland again I think his settled family life would mean that he would be more likely to retire than accept any job with Coolmore.
If howver he did go those ‘flying dismounts’ would be a thing of the past!

The only thing normally The News of The World gets right is the date and the price.

However the article on Phil Curry yesterday in the R.P. was worth a read.

Race commentator Phil Curry has chosen to give up his job next month and devote 100% of his time to punting.

Phil Curry is a well known student of the form book and according to the R.P. article drives a Porsche and lives in a big house which he had built to his specifications.

He is going to concentrate backing mainly ‘in running’ using exchange shops which offer the quickest feeds from the racecourses.

It seems logical then he is looking at form for horses that are certain to stay the distance and then strike after the early front runners look like they are starting to fade but is it that simple?

He gives Towcester as an example of a bad course for backing in running as many simply fall away up the run in there but for me horses that have won at Towcester and especially jockeys who have shown patience riding there in the past all seem to do well.

However a form book student who claims to be above average he surely would have known this anyway.

Curry also states that he starts the day with the plan to bet on every race but admits he rarely does.

I have all day to devote to racing but there are many races where for various resons I just scrawl a line through the list of runners. Surely no one in the real World wishes to bet on every race?

I do agree with him though where he states since the recession there seems to be a fall in the turnover ‘in running’ on Betfair.

I rarely bet in running anyway as I simply do not see the sense in trying to beat players that have at least a few seconds advantage over me due to the speeds some trading rooms operate at.

    I wish him well anyway.
